Clementines are especially appreciated for their delicious flavor, and recent years have seen a great increase in the consumption of clementine juice. In previous decades, antioxidant compounds have received particular attention because of widely demonstrated beneficial health effects. In this work, the organoleptic, volatile flavor, and antioxidant quality of clementine juice were studied with regard to the influence on them by different juice extraction systems: plug inside fruit and rotating cylinders. The results showed that juice extracted by the former method presented higher yields and hesperidin content, which was related to higher antioxidant activity, demonstrated by ORAC and LDL assays. The organoleptic quality was not affected by the processing technique, whereas there were significant differences in the chemical flavor profile. There are important differences in chemical and functional quality between juice extraction techniques, which must be taken into account when employing processing systems to produce high-quality products.  相似文献

The soil of the former lake Texcoco is an ‘extreme’ alkaline saline soil with pH > 10 and electrolytic conductivity (EC) > 150 dS m−1. These conditions have created a unique environment. Application of wastewater sludge to Texcoco soil showed that large amounts of NH4+ were immobilized, NO3 was reduced aerobically, NO2 was formed and the mineralization of the organic material in the sludge was inhibited. A series of experiments were initiated to study the processes that inhibited the decomposition of organic material and affected the dynamics of mineral N. The large EC and pH inhibited the decomposition of easily decomposable organic material such as glucose and maize, although cellulolytic activity was observed in soil with pH 9.8 and EC 32.7 dS m−1. The high soil pH favoured NH3 volatilization of approximately 50 mg N kg−1 soil within a day and a similar amount could be fixed on the soil matrix due to the dispersed minerals and their volcanic origin. Soil microorganisms immobilized large amounts of NH4+ within a day when glucose was added to soil in excess of what was required for metabolic activity. Removal of NO3 from soil amended with glucose was not inhibited by 100% O2 and NH4+ indicating that the contribution of denitrification and assimilatory reduction to the reduction of NO3 was minimal while the formation of NO2 was not inhibited by 0.1% acetylene, known to inhibit nitrification. Additionally, the reduction of NO3 in the glucose-amended alkaline saline Texcoco soil was followed by an increase in the amount of NH4+, which could not be due to denitrification. It was concluded that the reduction of NO3 and the formation of NO2 and NH4+ in the glucose-amended soil was a result of aerobic NO3 reduction. A phylogenetic analysis of the archaeal community in the soil of the former lake Texcoco showed that some of the clones identified were capable of reducing NO3 aerobically to NO2 when glucose was added. A study of the diversity of the bacterial dissimilatory and respiratory nitrate-reducing communities indicated that bacteria could have contributed to the process.  相似文献

Summary The bean weevil Acanthoscelides obtectus, is an important storage pest of common beans in Latin America and Africa. A few wild bean accessions from Mexico have been identified as highly resistant to the weevil. One accession, G 12952, was crossed to two susceptible bean cultivars differing in seed size. Reciprocal F1 and F2 individual seed were evaluated for days to adult emergence (DAE) and emerged adult weight. Maternally inherited seed size affected resistance measurements only in the F1 reciprocal crosses, however, the overall resistance level of the F1 was more similar to that of the susceptible cultivars. The F2 showed a continuous, but skewed distribution from low to high DAE. Very few F2 individuals had the resistance level of G 12952. When the frequency distributions were divided into discrete categories based on parental response, resistance was found to be inherited as two recessive complementary genes. The F3 generation showed an overall lowering of resistance levels compared to their original F2 evaluations. However, none of the lines classified as resistant (50 DAE) in the F2, fell into the susceptible category in the F3, indicating that the resistant genotypes were relatively stable as expected with recessively inherited traits. Modifying genes from the commercial parents may be responsible for general lowering of resistance. Seed size was negatively correlated with adult weight but not with DAE. The unique resistance of the wild bean accessions is discussed in relation to its inheritance. The results and obstacles encountered in the A. obtectus breeding program at CIAT are described.  相似文献

Summary Photoperiod response of flowering in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is thought to be controlled by the genes Ppd and Hr. However, cultivars also vary in the degree that cooler temperatures reduces their sensitivity to photoperiod. To examine the inheritance of this temperature sensitivity, crosses of cvs. Gordo x de Celaya and Flor de Mayo × Rojo 70 were evaluated at two sites differing in mean temperature and using 12.5-h natural photoperiod or 18-h artificially extended photoperiod. Under 18-h photoperiod at the warmer site, Palmira, no plants of the parents or of the F2 populations flowered, confirming that the parents were sensitive to photoperiod. Under 12.5-h photoperiod at the cooler site, Popayan, the parents for each cross flowered at similar dates and no segregation for days to flower was observed. However, under 18-h photoperiod, de Celaya and Rojo 70 and the F1 populations did not flower within 100 days after planting, while the F2 and F3 populations showed segregation that was consistent with single gene inheritance, late flowering being dominant. Late flowering at Popayan under 18-h photoperiod indicates a lack of temperature sensitivity, so temperature insensitivity of the photoperiod response was dominant to sensitivity. The name Tip, for temperature insensitivity of photoperiod response, is proposed for this gene, with the recessive form of this gene conditioning earlier flowering at cooler temperatures with long daylengths. It is recognized that the observed segregation patterns could represent the effect of multiple alleles at the Ppd or Hr loci, and studies are proposed to test this possibility with molecular markers and recombinant inbred lines.  相似文献

This paper describes the modification of the clay minerals vermiculite (VT) and montmorillonite (MT) by intercalating Fe(III) polymers of different [OH(-)]:[Fe(III)] ratios with the aim of removing atrazine (AT) and its metabolites deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), and hydroxyatrazine (ATOH) from aqueous solution. An enhancement of adsorption capacity was observed for both intercalated clay minerals in comparison to the potassium-saturated materials (KVT or KMT). The results showed that different [OH(-)]:[Fe(III)] molar ratios had a small influence on the adsorption capacity, as well as in the basal spacing, BET surface area, and porosity. For the lowest initial concentrations of AT, DIA, and ATOH (0.050 mg L(-)(1)) studied, the modified VT adsorbed almost 80% of AT and DIA, while ATOH was removed at concentration levels below the detection limit of the technique, implying in at least 99.5% of sorption. Weak interaction between intercalated VT and DEA was observed, although a significant adsorption enhancement occurred in comparison to KVT. Within a 24 h interval, desorption of AT and DIA in aqueous medium reached levels close to 20% of the amount initially adsorbed, while for ATOH only 3% of the adsorbed compound was desorbed. The adsorption capacity of the Fe(III)-intercalated VT decreased after the first adsorption/desorption cycle, implying that the material is not suitable for reutilization. The intercalated MT was a powerful sorbent for AT, DEA, DIA, and ATOH, removing all of these chemicals from solution almost quantitatively (sorption greater than 99.5%), even at initial concentrations as high as 1.0 mg L(-)(1). Additionally, desorption of AT, ATOH, and DIA in water was not measurable up to the tube corresponding to the initial concentration of 1.0 mg L(-)(1), suggesting strong irreversible binding of these compounds to the intercalated MT materials. Desorption of DEA from the intercalated MT was between 5 and 30%. Unlike what was observed for VT, the intercalated MT materials were recyclable, keeping an excellent performance when reutilized.  相似文献

For most carnivore populations, territoriality is the regulating social system ultimately determined by food abundance and/or strife. However, in some food-based territorial felid species such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), the influence of food availability on territoriality remains unclear and may be lessened because of a tendency for individuals to occur at high densities across the landscape. We examined spatial organization and use of food in a population of jaguars in the southern region of the Pantanal, Brazil (2003-04). We predicted that if territoriality plays an important role in determining jaguar population dynamics, exclusive use of territories should be observed and thereby influence prey selection patterns. We determined that home range sizes were comparable between sexes and overlapped little at the core area level. Line transect surveys revealed that large mammals comprised the bulk of available wild prey for jaguars, and scat analysis indicated that jaguars relied mostly on large mammalian prey. The most common wild species killed by jaguars were capybara (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) and caiman (Caiman yacare). We estimated that the wild prey base was adequate to support the jaguar population. Larger wild prey species were considerably more likely to die from predation than from other causes, and predation was more likely to occur in jaguar core areas than in areas of home range overlap. Modest cattle depredation rates had little demographic importance to the local jaguar population. We conclude that spacing patterns in the local jaguar population were likely based on exclusion through territoriality rather than food limitation.  相似文献

Plant extracts have been widely used in animal production systems due to the benefits promoted by their bioactive components, mainly through their antioxidant effects and positive effects on animal growth, health, and meat quality. We determined whether bioactive compounds (BC) from grape (Vitis vinifera), olive (Olea europaea), and pomegranate (Punica granatum) have beneficial effects on lamb growth while controlling gastrointestinal parasitism and reducing skeletal lipid peroxidation in muscle. Fourteen lambs (4 to 5 mo of age) were housed in individual pens and assigned to two treatment groups (seven animals/group), where they received: 1) a basal diet of beet pulp:soybean meal (90:10) (CONTROL) and 2) the same diet, but containing 0.3% of BC extracted from grape, olive, and pomegranate (BNP). After 21 d of consuming their respective rations (period 1), all lambs were dosed with 10,000 L3 stage larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Intake, production, and physiological parameters were determined before infection (period 1), after oral dosage with L3 (period 2), and during early (period 3) and later (period 4) developmental stages of infection. Groups of animals did not differ in their ration intake or average daily gain, either before or after the infection, or in their parasitic burdens estimated through fecal egg counts (P > 0.05). Lambs under BNP showed greater feed efficiency before infection (P < 0.001), but the pattern reversed after infection. In addition, the inclusion of plant bioactives to the diet did not have an effect (P > 0.05) on blood or lipid peroxidation in muscle or on hemogram, serum concentration of haptoglobin, and immunoglobulin E. These results could be explained by low dietary doses and constrained absorption or ruminal inactivation of these compounds. Changes in feed efficiencies suggest a negative interaction between BC in the diet and parasitism, which warrants further research.  相似文献
