Wild Lens taxa are a reservoir of useful rare genes/alleles for widening the genetic base and synthesis of a new gene pool of lentil. To maximize and sustain lentil production, new gene sources are needed to be identified and incorporated into cultivated background. This needs a comprehensive approach to accumulate favourable alleles from distantly related germplasm for widening of the cultivated gene pool and would be the most appropriate strategy to solve the various problems associated with stressed crop production and plateaued yields. Furthermore, expansion of deeper understanding of lentil genomics along with extensive research undertaken in other crop species can provide suitable guidelines to cover the distribution of Lens genus and component gene pools for further remarkable progress in lentil genetic improvement. This review aims at the genus Lens distribution and gene pools, crop germplasm conserved in ex‐situ and in‐situ collection, wild species characterization and evaluation for useful traits of interest to solve production‐related problems, highlight useful gene sources present in different gene pools and the progress achieved for widening the genetic base of cultivated varieties of lentil through wide hybridization and exploring lentil genomics. 相似文献

Essential oils of Vitex trifolia and Vitex agnus-castus were evaluated against Vth instar larvae of Spilosoma obliqua, when applied topically on the dorsal side of mesothoracic region, for insect growth regulatory activity. A 60‐day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding Houttuynia cordata leaf meal and extract on the growth performance, nutrient utilization and expression of insulin‐like growth factor‐I (IGF‐I) in Labeo rohita fingerlings. Two hundred seventy fingerlings were randomly distributed in six experimental groups in triplicates. Six isonitrogenous (350 g/kg CP) and isocaloric (17 MJ/kg DE) diets were prepared with graded levels of leaf meal (LM) and leaf extract (LE), namely C (control, without LE and LM), LE‐0.25 (2.5 g/kg LE), LE‐0.5 (5 g/kg LE), LE‐1.0 (10 g/kg LE), LM‐1.0 (10 g/kg LM) and LM‐2.0 (20 g/kg LM). Significantly (p < 0.05) higher IGF‐I expression, weight gain %, specific growth rate and lower feed conversion ratio were observed in LM‐1.0 followed by LE‐1.0 group compared to control group. Higher protease activity was observed in LE‐1.0 compared to other experimental groups, while no significant changes were found for amylase and lipase activities. Compared to control, muscle alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were significantly higher in treatment groups except for LM‐2.0. These results suggest that either LE‐1.0 or LM‐1.0 can be supplemented in the diet to improve the growth of L. rohita. However, the supplementation of 10 g H. cordata leaf meal/kg feed can be the better option considering the cost of extraction. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Lentil (Lens culinaris L.), a pulse crop, is grown in nutrient-poor soils in many developing countries, often with little or no fertilization. Knowledge on root traits of lentil and the assessment of their role in nutrient capture would help to sustain its production in these nutrient-poor soils. Root traits (root length, root hairs, root-induced acidification, and phosphatase enzymes) of 10 lentil genotypes (Barimasur-3, Barimasur-4, PLX-79542, GP-8407-5, GP-8403, BLX-79542, L-5 × 8704(2), L-107 × 87012, L-5 × 87272 and 8406-122) were investigated and then related to the plant uptake of phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), and cobalt (Co) in laboratory and pot experiments. There were significant (p < 0.05) differences in root length (RL) and root-hair density (number mm?1 root) among the genotypes. The genotypes did not differ to induce rhizosphere acidification and acid phosphatase activity (aptase). Uptake of most nutrients differed significantly (p < 0.05) among the genotypes, but root length (RL) was, in general, weakly correlated to the uptake of the most nutrients in the shoot dry matter (DM). The genotypes with prolific root-hair formation (Barimasur-4 and Barimasur-3) were particularly superior in uptake of those nutrients (K, P, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Mo) whose availability in soils is usually low and whose transport to the roots is diffusion limited. The results of this investigation, though based on a small sample of lentil accessions/cultivars, suggest that genetic variation in lentil root traits and nutrient uptake can be pronounced. Screening of a large number of local and exotic cultivars or lines of lentil should be conducted by including more root traits (N2 fixation, organic acids, mycorrhizae) to find nutrient-efficient germplasm to promote lentil production. 相似文献

Sperm cells perform precise chemotactic and thermotactic movement which is crucial for fertilization. However, the key molecules involved in detection of different chemical and physical stimuli which guide the sperm during navigation are not well understood. Ca2+-signalling mediated by ion channels seem to play important role in motility and other fertility parameters. In this work, we explored the endogenous localization pattern of TRPV channels in the mature spermatozoa of avian species. Using sperm from white pekin duck (Anas platyrhynchos) as the representative avian model, we demonstrate that duck sperm endogenously express the thermosensitive channels TRPV1, TRPV2, TRPV3, TRPV4, and highly Ca2+-selective channels TRPV5 and TRPV6 in specific yet differential locations. All of these TRPV channels are enriched in the sperm tail, indicating their relevance in sperm motility. Interestingly, the TRPV3 and TRPV4 channels are present in the mitochondrial region. Calcium selective TRPV5 channel is exclusively present in sperm tail and is most abundant among the TRPV channels. This is the first report describing the endogenous presence of TRPV2 and TRPV3 channels in the sperm of any species. Using confocal imaging and super-resolution imaging, we demonstrate that though the TRPV channels are evolutionarily closely related, they have distinct localization pattern in the duck sperm, which could impact their role in fertilization. 相似文献

Neutrophils employ both oxidative and non oxidative mechanisms to destroy pathogens. Function of neutrophils coming in milk during mammary invasion is not clearly understood in dairy animals. Therefore, the present study was designed in 36 Sahiwal cows to see the changes occurring in the neutrophil activity of cows suffering from subclinical (SCM) and clinical mastitis (CM). Cows were divided into three groups as healthy (n?=?12), SCM (n?=?12) and CM (n?=?12) groups on the basis of CMT scoring, gross morphological changes in milk, bacteriological examination of milk and by counting milk SCC. Significantly (P?0.05) higher milk SCC, neutrophil percent and significantly (P?0.05) lower viability of both blood and milk neutrophils were observed in CM group of cows as compared to SCM and control group of cows. Phagocytic activity (PA) was significantly (P?0.05) higher in milk neutrophils of SCM and CM cows as compared to control cows. Toll like receptors 2 and 4 in blood and milk neutrophils were found to be significantly (P?0.05) higher, whereas, apoptosis in terms of altered mitochondrial transmembrane potential, Caspase 3 and 7 activities were found to be significantly (P?0.05) lower in CM cows. Alterations in surface architecture of neutrophils in terms of formation of pseudopods was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and found to be higher in CM cows. Blood neutrophils were found to be spherical as compared to milk neutrophils. Formation of neutrophil extracellular trap (NETs) were found milk neutrophils of CM cows, whereas, SCM and healthy cows did not exhibit NET formation. The study indicated a positive correlation between lower neutrophil apoptosis and higher expression of TLR2 and TLR4 with the formation of NETs and change in surface architecture. Formation of NET like structures seemed to be an effective mode of defense employed by neutrophils of cows suffering from clinical mastitis. 相似文献

Introgression of unadapted genes from the wild Cicer species could contribute to the widening of genetic base of important traits such as yield, yield attributes and resistance to major biotic and abiotic stresses. An attempt was made successfully to intercross two wild annual Cicer species with three cultivated chickpea cultivars. Four interspecific cross‐combinations were made, and their true hybridity was ascertained through morphological and molecular markers. These cross‐combinations were also studied for some important quantitative traits under real field conditions. The range, mean and coefficient of variation of agro‐morphological traits were assessed in the parental lines, their F1 and F2 generations to determine the extent of variability generated in cultivated chickpea varieties. A high level of heterosis was recorded for number of pods/plant and seed yield/plant in F1 generation. Three cross‐combinations of ‘Pusa 1103’ × ILWC 46, ‘Pusa 256’ × ILWC 46 and ‘Pusa 256’ × ILWC 239 exhibited substantially higher variability for important yield‐related traits. The present research findings indicate that these wild annual Cicer species can be easily exploited to broaden the genetic base of cultivated gene pool for improving seed yield as well as adaptation. 相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to explore the effect of dietary Houttuynia cordata leaf extract (HCLE) and leaf meal (HCLM) on immunological responses and expression of interferon‐gamma (IFN‐γ) and tumour necrosis factor‐alpha (TNF‐α) gene in Labeo rohita fingerlings. Six isonitrogenous (350 g/kg CP) and isocaloric (17 MJ/kg DE) purified experimental diets were formulated with Houttuynia cordata leaf extract and leaf meal comprising control, C (0 g/kg HCLE and HCLM), E2.5 (2.5 g/kg HCLE), E5 (5 g/kg HCLE), E10 (10 g/kg HCLE), M10 (10 g/kg HCLM) and M20 (20 g/kg HCLM). Labeo rohita fingerlings (3.37 ± 0.23 g) were distributed in six experimental groups in triplicates following the complete random distribution. Fish were fed twice daily with respective experimental diets for a period of 60 days. A significantly (p < .05) lower lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were registered in supplemented groups compared with control group, while respiratory burst and lysozyme activities were significantly (p < .05) higher in E10 group compared with other experimental groups. Haemoglobin, total leucocyte count, total erythrocyte count and haematocrit values were significantly (p < .05) higher in E10 group. The expression of IFN‐γ and TNF‐α in both the kidney and liver was significantly up‐regulated in leaf extract and meal supplemented groups with the highest expression in the fish of E10 group. Overall, these results suggest that the dietary supplementation of ethanolic extract of the Houttuynia cordata leaf at 10 g/kg level can enhance the immune response of L. rohita fingerlings. 相似文献
