  1. The five global Mediterranean-climate regions are experiencing alarming rates of freshwater biodiversity loss. Although freshwater mussels are recognized as important functional components in aquatic ecosystems, and are among the most threatened faunal groups globally, there has been no synthesis of the plight of this group within these regions.
  2. Data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List were reviewed to compare the conservation status, threats, and conservation actions needed for freshwater mussel species occurring in Mediterranean-climate regions (med-mussels) with those of other freshwater mussel species globally. The first comprehensive catalogue of med-mussel species was compiled using existing taxonomic literature.
  3. There are 41 med-mussel species, 30 of which occur in the Mediterranean basin. Many regions have just a single species, and regions where multiple species occur generally only have between one and four species per river basin. Med-mussel species are almost twice as likely to be ‘Imperilled’, are affected by 2.4 times more threats, and require 3.5 times more conservation actions than non-med mussels. In many cases, the exact threats have not been identified.

In combination with low species richness, this level of imperilment means that Mediterranean-climate regions are at risk of losing the benefits that mussels provide to broader ecosystem functioning. The conservation of med-mussels can be improved by increasing our knowledge of species distributions, including the identification of cryptic species and significant management units, through population genetic work. In addition, recognizing the potential of ‘novel’ habitats and refuge areas could augment the management of this important functional group.

The results of a series of pilot-scale runs with P. mazatlanica larvae from 2004 through 2006 are reported. Preliminary runs in 2004 and 2005 used broodstock collected in summer, when massive spawning of wild populations naturally occurs. However, results of larval development were very poor and failed to produce spat in both years. In 2006, ripe broodstock were still collected in summer, but also in the spring time, based on the hypothesis that the gonads in this season were in better reproductive condition that in summer. Three larval runs were conducted in 2006: two in spring and one in summer. Larvae growth and survival greatly increased in both spring runs, ending with two successful productions of spat (∼ 20 × 103 and ∼ 100 × 103 juveniles). The summer larval run in 2006 failed again to produce spat. Additionally, the first run of April 2006 refers to an experiment that evaluated two different larval culture conditions: constant temperature (27 °C) and low stocking density (3-4 larvae ml− 1) versus variable temperature (24-28 °C) and high stocking density (8-9 larvae ml− 1). The first trial significantly increased larval survival and growth, which in turn resulted in greater numbers of settled spat, in comparison of the second trial, where survival, growth, and settlement of spat were significantly lower. Also in 2006, the quality of seawater used at the hatchery was evaluated with microbiological and chemical tests. The implication of these tests, together with results from all experiments are analyzed and discussed in terms of the potential development of large-scale hatchery cultivation of P. mazatlanica larvae in Mexico.  相似文献

Fish fillet quality is influenced by feed quality. In particular, vitamin B6 availability improves growth rate and nutritional value, because it is related to protein and lipid metabolism. The present study investigates the effect of increasing amounts of vitamin B6 on growth, fatty acid composition and lipid peroxidation of muscle tissue of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Quadruplicate groups of trout of a mean initial weight of 110 g were fed commercial diets supplemented with four different quantities of vitamin B6 (0, 10, 25 and 50 mg kg?1 diet). Over the experimental period, there were no significant differences in weight gain and feed intake, while vitamin B6 concentration of muscle was affected by dietary intake, even though its increase was not proportional to the concentrations in the feed. The fatty acid composition of muscle lipid showed differences between the four groups. The percentage of long‐chain unsaturated fatty acids, in particular docosahexaenoic acid, increased significantly in vitamin B6‐supplemented groups. However, despite the increased fatty acid unsaturation index, lipid peroxidation parameters such as vitamin E content, malondialdehyde production, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase activities did not show significant differences, meaning that the higher level of long‐chain unsaturated fatty acid did not increase the muscle susceptibility to oxidative stress.  相似文献

We used a factorial mating design to estimate the contribution of additive genetic, non‐additive genetic and maternal effects to variation in growth traits of black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri (Munro) at 75, 130 and 180 days of age in the hatchery. Maternal genetic and environmental effects were greatest at 75 days of age, accounting for 9.1% of total phenotypic variance in wet weight, 11.4% of variance in standard length and 8.8% of variance in total length. At later ages maternal effects were much reduced, explaining 0.8–3.7% of phenotypic variance in growth traits. Additive genetic effects were greatest at 130 days of age, when they accounted for 17.4% of total phenotypic variance in wet weight, 21.4% of variance in standard length and 18.7% of variance in total length. Additive genetic effects were negligible (<1%) at 75 days of age and 4.8–5.5% of total phenotypic variance in growth traits at 180 days of age. Non‐additive genetic effects (which also included common environmental effects because of families being raised in the same tank) explained 5.8–7.3% of total phenotypic variance in growth traits at 75 days of age, but were much smaller at later ages. Variable stocking densities among tanks up to 75 days significantly affected all growth trait measurements below 180 days of age.  相似文献

A comparison was made of some productive traits of Stirling Nile tilapia (wild type) (Oreochromis niloticus, Linnaeus) and red hybrid tilapia (Florida red tilapia× Stirling red O. niloticus) males during a 98‐day grow‐out period. Twenty‐two males from each genetic group with initial weights of 139.0 g for O. niloticus and 207.3 g for the red hybrid were placed in triplicate tanks. The fish were fed with a feed containing 36.8% crude protein. Survival was 97.0% for the red hybrid and 83.3% for O. niloticus. Daily individual weight gains were 2.95 and 2.50 g and final body weights were 473.0 and 348.8 g for the red hybrid and O. niloticus respectively. Fillet yield was similar for both the species, with 33.4% for the red hybrid and 32.0% for O. niloticus. Fresh fillet lipid content was perceptibly less in the red hybrid (0.33%) than in O. niloticus (2.07%). Some benefits of a red low‐fat tilapia genotype are discussed.  相似文献

Salmon farming began in British Columbia (BC) in the 1970s and in 2006, aquaculture represented BC's largest agricultural export. Along with this growth in production has been a growth in controversy, including the concern that sea lice originating from Atlantic salmon farms negatively impact wild juvenile pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago. To understand the dynamic interaction between wild and farmed fish, data for on‐farm abundance of sea lice are required. In this study, 33 000 Atlantic salmon from 20 active farms were examined over 3 years. Two species of lice were found: Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi. Inter‐annual and seasonal variations in abundance levels occurred with lower levels of L. salmonis in 2003 compared with 2004 and 2005, while C. clemensi levels were highest in 2003. The abundance of L. salmonis was greater on older farmed fish. The findings are compared with European and eastern Canadian sea lice reports, and possible sources of sea lice on farmed salmon are discussed.  相似文献

A comparison of composition and sensory evaluation were performed on fillets of Oreochromis niloticus (wild type) and red hybrid tilapia (RHT) (Florida red tilapia ♂× red O. niloticus♀). Fifty male tilapia, 25 O. niloticus (initial weight 159.3 g) and 25 red hybrid (initial weight 132.4 g), were placed in each of three 2.0 m3 volume tanks. The fish were fed a commercial feed containing 35.9% crude protein during the 120‐day experimental period and then killed in cold water (3°C). All the fish were filleted. Twelve fillets from each treatment were used for proximate analyses, five fillets from each treatment were used for fatty acids analyses and the remaining fillets were used for sensory evaluation. The compositional analyses showed similar moisture, true protein and ash content in both genetic groups, but a lower crude fat content was measured in the red hybrid fillets (0.70%) compared with that of O. niloticus fillets (0.97%). No differences between O. niloticus and the red hybrid were observed in their fillet profile of fatty acids. In the sensory evaluation test, a difference in fillet flavour between both genetic groups was perceived. Of the 112 consumers in the preference test, 81.2% perceived a difference in fillet flavour between the two tilapias, with a general preference for the red hybrid over the wild‐type O. niloticus. The benefits of cultivating a RHT with a low lipid content are discussed.  相似文献

A challenge in machine vision is to develop algorithms for detecting a substance with an amorphous shape when measured responses of both the substance and the underlying target have similar characteristics. The challenge is exacerbated when responses for targets are highly variable both across and within discrete target units. An example of this problem is the detection of fecal contamination on apples. Feces on apples can be detected using differential fluorescence responses of contaminated and uncontaminated apple surfaces to UV excitation. However, responses of both feces and apples are due to the presence of chlorophyll-related compounds, and the response of apples varies within and between apples due to natural variation in the distribution of these compounds. We present a technique for normalizing the variability of intensity responses among targets based on a priori knowledge of the image dimensions and the approximate target size. Using this information, a linear equation is derived based on the approximate median intensities of the background and of the target. The median intensities are estimated by calculating a cumulative intensity histogram and using a priori estimates of the percentage of the area in the image occupied by the background and by a generic target. The image is scaled for uniform intensity power using this linear transformation. The benefits of using this technique are demonstrated using hyperspectral fluorescence responses to UV excitation of 48 Golden Delicious and 48 Red Delicious apples artificially contaminated with dilutions of cow feces. Results show that the uniform power transformation normalizes the intensity distributions of apple images and increases the contrast between contaminated and uncontaminated areas on apple surfaces; the coefficients of variation for the average intensities of uncontaminated apple surfaces at 668 nm for Golden and Red Delicious apples were reduced from 39 and 55%, respectively, to 5% for both varieties.  相似文献
