Compounds responsible for insecticidal properties of Chrysanthemum macrotum (D.R.) Ball. leaves against Spodoptera littoralis Boiduval caterpillars have been investigated. The screening of the insecticidal activity was performed by incorporating methanol, buthanol or ethyl acetate extracts, or some chromatographic fractions to the caterpillars’ artificial diet. It was noted that extracts and fractions ameliorated or disturbed nutritional indexes, being not always toxic for caterpillars. Among the tested fractions, one pure compound with a high insecticidal activity (percentage of mortality 66.7%) was purified. The nuclear magnetic resonance study allowed its identification as a polyacetylene derivative, in particular a spiroketal enol ether one. 相似文献

Essential oils from three species of Chrysanthemum growing in Tunisia (C. coronarium, C. fuscatum, and C. grandiflorum) were first analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry (MS) and then evaluated for toxicity and antifeeding action against Tribolium confusum. The essential oils obtained from leaves and flowers shared a similar qualitative composition, but the relative proportions of the constituents were quite different. The essential oil of C. grandiflorum was rich in sesquiterpenoids, while those of C. fuscatum and C. coronarium were rich in monoterpenoids. The main common constituents of all the essential oils were ??-pinene, myrcene, ??-humulene, ??-caryophylene, spathulenol, and caryophyllene oxide. The most effective essential oil was obtained from the leaves of C. grandiflorum, that inhibited the relative growth rate (?0.03?mg/mg/d), efficiency of conversion of ingested food (?50.69%), relative consumption rate, caused an antifeeding effect (66.43%) and a high mortality (80%) of T. confusum larvae. Topical application C. grandiflorum essential oil caused a significant insect mortality that attends 27% after 7?days of treatment. While essential oil from C. coronarium flowers has contact and fumigant toxicity with a mortality of 9 and 13%, respectively. Results analysis highlights a relationship between essential oils composition and insecticidal activity against T. confusum. The study showed that each essential oil has specific chemical composition and act differently according to the nature of attributed test. The use of essential oils from different Chrysanthemum species with different methods helps poor farmers who store small amounts of grains to preserve it against pest infestation. 相似文献

Objective The present study was undertaken to establish reference values for Schirmer tear test (STT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in the long‐eared hedgehog (Hemiechinus auritus). Animals Fourteen healthy long‐eared hedgehogs (H. auritus) of either sex were studied. Procedures The hedgehogs were individually immobilized with an intramuscular injection of combined Ketamine (20 mg/kg) and Diazepam (0.5 mg/kg), and each animal underwent ophthalmic examinations including: STT, tonometry, biomicroscopy, and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Results No significant effects of animal gender, weight, side (right vs. left eye) were found in this study. Mean (SD) STT values for all eyes (n = 28) were 1.7 ± 1.2 mm/1 min with a range of 0–4 mm/1 min. Mean STT in male animals was 2.2 ± 1.2. Mean STT in female Hedgehogs was 1.3 ± 1.1. Mean (SD) IOP values by applanation tonometry were 20.1 ± 4.0 mmHg (range 11.5–26.5 mmHg). Mean (SD) IOP values by applanation tonometry were 18.2 ± 4.0 and 22.0 ± 3.2 mmHg for males and females, respectively. Forest edges may affect the organisms in a forest fragment by changing biotic and abiotic conditions, and they have important effects on biodiversity. This characteristic of forest landscape is usually assessed using remotely sensed data. When doing so, forest edge length is estimated using either polygon delineation (manually or automatically) or sampling methods. This study attempts to estimate the total forest edge length (at regional level) using three estimation techniques: mapped plot, line intersects sampling, and buffer zone. Another aim is to compare the precision of the results using these techniques with field data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory (NFI). The Swedish NFI data allows reasonable precision (less than 10% SE) estimating total forest edge length. In most cases, line intersects sampling and mapped plot (at the subplot level) produce more precise estimates than buffer zone (at cluster level). All three techniques can be applied in monitoring programs aimed at measuring important biodiversity metrics from forest landscape patterns. It was also found that edge density was highest in the south of Sweden. Another future application worth investigating is the ability to determine how forest edge length metrics change over time. 相似文献

The experiment containing three replicates of completely randomized factorial treatments was conducted in a glasshouse under controlled conditions with three simulated soil salinity levels (control, 10 and 15 dS m?1). Morpho-physiological traits (i.e. lengths, fresh weights and dry weights of root and shoot, number of leaves, root/shoot ratio, shoot Na+ accumulation, K+/Na+ ratio, Ca2+/Na+ ratio, membrane stability index, lycopene contents, chlorophyll-a and -b) were recorded to determine mechanism of salt tolerance of tomato at seedling stage. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to express a three-way interaction of genotype × salinity level × traits that scattered the 25 tomato genotypes based on their morpho-physiological response to different NaCl levels. The negative association of Na+ with all other traits except root/shoot ratio and the morpho-physiological response trend of genotypes exposed that probable mechanism of salt tolerance was initially Na+ exclusion by abscising older leaves to have younger physiologically energetic, and lastly a higher activity of plants for root development to sustain them in saline soil. PCA three-way biplot efficiently recognized ANAHU, LA-2821, LO-2752, LO-2707, PB-017909, LO-2831-23 and 017860 as salt tolerant genotypes. On the other hand, ZARNITZA, GLACIER, LO-2692, LO-2576, BL-1079, 006233, 006232, 017856, NUTYT-701 and NAGINA were found to be salt susceptible. 相似文献

We investigated the coupling of abundance of bacteria, phytoplankton and ciliates with hydrocarbons in the surface water and sediments of five interconnected ponds in the arid Sfax solar salterns. This study aimed at determining the potential sources of hydrocarbons and the effects of salinity gradients on microorganism metabolism. Hydrocarbon analysis was performed by gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The GC-FID allowed the detection of aliphatic hydrocarbons and n-alkanes ranging from n-C13 to n-C30. Total aliphatic hydrocarbon concentrations varied from 92.5 mg. l?1 in the first pond (having marine characteristics) to 661.1 mg. l?1 in the last pond (crystallizer) (316.8?±?120.1 mg. l?1) for water samples and from 26.7 to 127.8 μg. g?1 dry weight for sediment samples. The GC-MS enabled us to detect halogenated hydrocarbons (bromoalkanes and chloroalkanes) and n-alkenes. The distribution of n-alkanes indices coupled to several environmental factors suggests that a major fraction of hydrocarbons resulted from both prokaryotic (bacteria) and eukaryotic (protists) developments. The pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae against the tick fowl Argas persicargas persicus was studied. Bioassays revealed significant differences between the two fungi and the A. persicargas persicus stages exposed. The first nymphal instar was more highly susceptible to both fungi than the second nymphal instar. The unfed female of A. persicargas persicus was significantly less susceptible to both fungi than the engorged female. Application of M. anisopliae to sackcloth naturally infested with the tick fowl A. persicargas persicus induced mortality which reached 100% three weeks after treatment under field conditions. Ovaries of two goats with persistent corpus luteum were studied by histochemical methods. Lutein cells showed moderate alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activity associated with strong delta 5-3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and succinic tetrazolium reductase activity. Surface conductance to water vapor diffusion was measured in individual peach fruits (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) and plotted as a function of fresh fruit mass for four cultivars. Surface conductance increased with fresh fruit mass, but the pattern differed with cultivar, and fruit-to-fruit variation occurred. Relationships between fruit mass and surface conductance were modeled by fitting mathematical equations to the data. The simulation model of Fishman and Génard (1998) was used to study dry mass and water components of fruit growth (1) when surface conductance varied with fruit size or was constant, and (2) when surface conductance values were high, moderate or low with respect to fruit mass. Increased surface conductance with fresh fruit mass resulted in fruit growth cessation. Fruits differing in surface conductance had similar dry mass. However, under well-watered conditions (stem water potential between -1 and -0.2 MPa), the water balance components of growth (osmotic and hydrostatic pressure, water potential and water balance) differed greatly and, as a result, the lower the surface conductance the greater the fresh fruit mass. Although a stenohaline freshwater fish, the stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis, is also available in the freshwater fringes of the coastal areas of Bangladesh, the tolerance of this species to variable environmental salinity has not been thoroughly investigated. Based on median lethal salinity (MLS‐50 96 h), three sublethal salinity levels (3 ppt, 6 ppt and 9 ppt) and a control (0 ppt), each with three replications were selected to observe the effects of mildly brackish conditions on the fish for a period of 90‐day exposure. Better growth and survival were found up to 6 ppt compared with control. Salinity more than 6 ppt appeared unsuitable for H. fossilis fingerling due to increased mortality and reduced growth. To determine biochemical alterations, a few important physiological parameters were observed after 90 days of exposure. Glycogen level of liver and muscle in the fish reared at 9 ppt salinity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) as compared to the control. Glucose level in blood and liver was also found to be increased in fish with increase in salinity. ALP and ATPase activities were reduced significantly in both muscle and liver tissues at higher salinity, indicating the stress mitigation effect. However, all the biochemical parameters were found in normal condition up to 6 ppt compared with control. This evidence suggests that H. fossilis can sustain and grow well below 6 ppt and can be a potential candidate for culture in coastal areas after heavy downpour when the salinities level falls to 6 ppt or lower. 相似文献
