Purpose
The aim of the present study was to investigate possible relationships between the sediment contaminants and the occurrence of intersex in situ. In common with much of the Western world, agrarianism—valuing farmers and agricultural activity as intrinsically worthwhile, noble, and contributing to the strength of the national character—runs through Australian culture and politics. Agrarian sentiments and attitudes have been identified through empirical research and by inference from analysis of political debate, policy content, and studies of media and popular culture. Empirical studies have, however, been largely confined to the US, with little in the way of recent re-evaluations of, or developments from, early work. This paper reports on research that seeks quantitative empirical evidence for the existence of agrarianism in the Australian community and seeks to identify its core characteristics. Using a purpose-designed sub-set of items within a large, omnibus-style survey of regional and rural Australia, we demonstrate that agrarianism exists as a scientifically quantifiable concept identifiable through responses to four key propositions: that Australians should support policies aimed at improving the position of the agricultural industries; that working in agriculture and associated industries brings out the best in people; that agricultural producers make a major contribution to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation; and that the development of agriculture in Australia contributed to the development of the national character. We found very little variation in the degree to which different demographic groupings agree with agrarianism. Older people, farmers, and non-Indigenous Australian-born respondents were among those who were statistically significantly more likely to agree with the defining propositions of agrarianism, but their scores were only very slightly higher than those of other sub-populations in the sample. 相似文献

Glutenin largely determines wheat bread baking quality. As high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS), related to Glu-1 loci, determines wheat flour elasticity, it correlates strongly with bread-making quality. This study was aimed at clarifying genetic variations in bread-making characteristics between East and West Asian wheat landrace germplasms, by investigating HMW-GS allelic composition of 1068 wheat accessions. Herein, the accession number having reported HMW-GS pattern in previous studies was 855. However, the accession number with newly detected HMW-GS patterns was 114. These new HMW-GS patterns were classified into 4 types based on similarity. Eight Korean accessions with these four types were identified. Concerning landrace germplasm nature, 99 accessions showed heterogeneous patterns caused by seed mixture. The Glu-1 loci allelic variation analysis, revealed that the percentages of Glu-A1c (73.6%), Glu-B1b (60.2%), and Glu-D1a (68.5%) were highest at Glu-A1, Glu-B1, and Glu-D1 loci, respectively. The incidence of preferable alleles for bread baking was high in Chinese accessions. In bread-making quality evaluation using Glu-1 score, 24 among 35 accessions with full score were from China. The polymorphic information content index of each origin based on HMW glutenin subunit combination showed that West Asian and neighboring-regional landraces, excluding Afghanistan ones, were more diverse than East Asian landraces excluding Chinese ones. Cluster analysis based on Glu-1 allelic combination showed that many Korean, Japanese, and Afghan accessions were in the same group. The present study addresses the mechanism of hydroxyl radical (·OH) generation by the collapse of microbubbles in water solution. The influence of gas supply and flow rate, solution pH, and ionic strength on the aeration efficiency, free radical generation, and contaminant removal (take methylene blue as an example) are elucidated. The results showed that the degradation rate of methylene blue by ·OH increased with flow rate as well as in acidic or alkaline solutions compared to that in neutral conditions. ·OH was shown to be produced by the reaction between protons and oxygen radicals generated by the decomposition of O2 rather than water molecules. A greater concentration of O2 or H+ thus promoted the reaction, resulting in effective removal at a high flow rate or low pH. Nevertheless, there was considerable methylene blue removal at high pH, driven by the production of the dye cation through the dissociation of methylene blue and the high electronegativity of bubbles at high pH, thus enhancing interface adsorption and degradation, as well as by the high ionic strength of the solution helping to generate ultrafine bubbles and maintaining them through ionic shielding. Microcystins (MCs) are endotoxins produced by cyanobacteria in freshwaters globally. With known potential for human health risks, rapid and effective treatment methods are needed for MCs. Previous studies have shown photocatalysis can achieve rapid half-lives with UV lamps and slurries of TiO2. In this experiment, rates and extents of solar photocatalysis of MCs were measured using bench-scale reactors with fixed films of TiO2 for solutions with a range of cellular:aqueous MC ratios. Since cellular MCs can be removed physically, photocatalysis rates were measured following sand filtration to discern the extent of MC removal post-filtration. Since UV energy drives photocatalysis using TiO2, rates of removal were calculated as a function of cumulative UV insolation and time. For water containing < 10% aqueous MC, filtration removed 90% of total MC, and the subsequent photocatalysis half-life was 0.37 MJ/m2 (or 111 min). For water with ~?50% aqueous MCs, filtration removed 52% of the total MCs, and the average half-life for photocatalysis was 0.38 MJ/m2 (or 138 min). For the >?90% aqueous MC treatment, filtration removed 0% MCs, and the photocatalysis half-life for MCs was 0.37 MJ/m2 (or 135 min). Previous studies have used clarified waters; however, results from this study are likely representative of scenarios with waters containing confounding water characteristics and use of solar light for UV, as anticipated in developing countries with less advanced water treatment methods. Photocatalysis is a rapid and effective process for decreasing concentrations of MCs and could be useful for mitigating risks from MC exposures in drinking water. 相似文献

Accurate estimation of oxidant consumption during in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is the key to determining the treatment effectiveness in contaminated sites. We established the estimation model of soil oxidant demand (SOD) and simulation equations of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) dynamic consumption based on the reaction equation of KMnO4 with reductive minerals and the estimation model of SOD. Model validation, model application, and simulation assessment had been accomplished. Results indicated that the simulations are in good agreement with measured data. The confidence level of the SOD estimation model of KMnO4 was over 80%, with sensitivity in decreasing order as follows: organic matter content > initial KMnO4 concentration > reductive minerals (RMs). Particularly, the organic matter played a dominate role in the SOD model estimation. The coefficient of determination (R2) of the SOD dynamic consumption simulation equation was above 0.9. Among the various types of soils, the overall trend of SOD value and reaction period decreased as follows: clay > loam > sand. However, the consumption rate of KMnO4 decreased in the order of clay > sand > loam. In addition, SOD value, reaction period, and reaction rate all increased as the initial concentration of KMnO4 went up. We present novel dynamic mixture models for the monitoring of bumblebee populations on an unprecedented geographical scale, motivated by the UK citizen science scheme BeeWalk. The models allow us for the first time to estimate bumblebee phenology and within-season productivity, defined as the number of individuals in each caste per colony in the population in that year, from citizen science data. All of these parameters are estimated separately for each caste, giving a means of considerable ecological detail in examining temporal changes in the complex life cycle of a social insect in the wild. Due to the dynamic nature of the models, we are able to produce population trends for a number of UK bumblebee species using the available time-series. Via an additional simulation exercise, we show the extent to which useful information will increase if the survey continues, and expands in scale, as expected. Bumblebees are extraordinarily important components of the ecosystem, providing pollination services of vast economic impact and functioning as indicator species for changes in climate or land use. Our results demonstrate the changes in both phenology and productivity between years and provide an invaluable tool for monitoring bumblebee populations, many of which are in decline, in the UK and around the world. Purpose
Cadmium (Cd) is regarded as one of the most toxic heavy metals in the environment and can undermine the ecosystem function and human health at trace level due to its high toxicity. In order to reduce the anthropogenic Cd input into agricultural soil, it is of utmost importance to pinpoint the sources of Cd in soils and apportion their respective contributions.Materials and methods
One hundred twenty-seven topsoil samples and 21 subsoil samples were collected from croplands of Meishan Basin, Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, Eastern China, and analyzed for concentrations of Cd and other heavy metals. Finite mixture distribution model (FMDM) was employed to fit the data to obtain the local soil Cd threshold value, a critical indicator to assess soil heavy metal contamination. Then, principal component analysis (PCA) and geographic information system (GIS) were used to identify the potential sources of Cd. Finally, positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to apportion the source contributions.Results and discussion
Among the 127 topsoil samples, 71 were subject to Cd contamination with a mean concentration of 0.66 mg kg?1 while the others were considered as background with a lower mean concentration of 0.145 mg kg?1, close to the local background concentration of 0.142 mg kg?1. Further, three components were extracted by PCA and interpreted as natural background, lead-acid battery manufacturing plants, and construction material associated activities, respectively. Additionally, most of the topsoil samples around the lead-acid battery manufacturing plants, construction material plants, and limestone/marble quarries were classified as Cd contaminated. However, PMF failed to get a successful portioning.Conclusions
Lead-acid battery manufacturing plants and construction material associated activities were the main anthropogenic sources of soil Cd contamination. With the help of FMDM, it is possible to distinguish the contaminated soil and estimate the contribution of anthropogenic sources to soil Cd. The apportionment by PMF was not successful in this paper due to the high skewness or outliers of Cd concentration in sampling sites and violation of the assumption that all samples have the same sources.100.

Engagement happens when academics and non-academics form partnerships to create mutual understanding, and then take action
together. An example is the “value web” work associated with W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food Systems Higher Education–Community
Partnership. Partners nationally work on local food systems development by building value webs. “Value chains,” a concept
with considerable currency in the private sector, involves creating non-hierarchical relationships among otherwise disparate
actors and entities to achieve collective common goals. The value web concept is extended herein by separating the values
of the web itself, such as the value of collaboration, from values “in” the web, such as credence values associated with a
product or service. By sharing and discussing case examples of work underway around the United States, the authors make a
case for employing the value webs concept to represent a strategy for local food systems development, specifically, and for
higher education–community partnerships, generally.
