Bone fluoride concentration was measured in field voles (Microtus agrestis) trapped throughout a year at a moderately polluted site 1 km south of an Al reduction plant at Holyhead, Anglesey. Fluoride values ranged from 300 to 4800 μg g?1, with a mean of 2074 μg g?1 and increased with age as judged by dried eye-lens weight and body weight. At a heavily polluted site about 250 m from the pot-room of the reduction plant field voles had bone fluoride concentrations which ranged from 910 to 11000 μg g?1 with a mean of 7148 μg g?1. Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) at this same location had a mean bone fluoride concentration of 8430 μg g?1 and ranged from 1800 to 17 200 μg g?1. The difference in mean bone fluoride concentration between these two species at this location was not significant (P > 0.1). A sample of field voles from presumed unpolluted sites in other parts of Britain had bone fluoride concentrations which ranged from 23 to 540 μg g?1 with a mean of 168 jig g?1. There was a high positive correlation (r > 0.97) between fluoride concentrations in different parts of field vole skeletons. There was no correlation between bone fluoride concentration in field voles and their femur diameters (r < 0.2).  相似文献

During June to September 1966 grazing activities of four randomly selected individuals in a herd of 17 non-lactating, free-ranging cattle were observed on an Irish hill-farm of approximately 15 hectares which provided a choice of four distinct vegetative associations. A marked preference for Holcus-Poa-Anthoxanthum-Agrostis sward was noted. Grazing did not take place at night. During daylight it occupied three distinct periods, ceasing shortly after sunset and beginning at dawn.  相似文献

In order to evaluate the quality of oysters and whether a production method affects quality or not, a set of objective quantitative quality measures was developed. Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) were cultured using two different treatments (never desiccated or desiccated daily with tidal exposure) and the meats were tested by textural, physico‐chemical and chemical analyses over a 25‐day cold storage period. Texture analyses parameters (cutting force and chewiness on oyster adductor muscles) were strongly correlated with storage time before the death of oysters and could be used as a quality indicator for oyster. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) could be used as freshness indicator for raw Eastern oysters, with the acceptability of 11 mg/100 g. Models for evaluating the quality of oysters were established that reflect the impact of a biofouling treatment on oyster's shelf life and texture attributes. The methods and quality indicators developed in this study were effective in evaluating the quality and freshness of Eastern oysters objectively, and could serve as routine quality check of oyster meat for the industry.  相似文献

Groups of 22 steers grazed eight diverse environments in Papua New Guinea for one year. Haemoglobin, packed cell volume, MCHC, plasma albumen, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and saliva sodium and potassium were measured; half of each group received cobalt supplements. Growth rate was measured. Cobalt deficiency was tentatively diagnosed at two sites, sodium deficiency at five sites and phosphorus at three with two other sites marginal. Sodium supplementation at the three most affected sites corrected sodium status and increased growth rate. Additionally, at two of these sites plasma phosphorus concentration increased to more normal levels presumably due to increased appetite. Statistically significant differences between sites occurred in the concentrations of other minerals but were not related to growth rates. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to assessment of mineral status in beef cattle.  相似文献

The effects of physiological (1, 10 ng/ml) and pharmacological (1,000 ng/ml) concentrations of insulin (INS) and porcine growth hormone (pGH) on lipid metabolism were determined in short-term (2 h) and long-term (26, 50 h) incubations of swine adipose tissue. The short-term effects of three different commercial sources of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on adipose tissue metabolism were also evaluated. Two of the three BSA preparations were found to be unsuitable for inclusion in the short-term incubation buffer because they caused a stimulation of lipid synthesis in adipose tissue and masked the stimulatory effects of insulin. Physiological concentrations of insulin stimulated glucose metabolism in 2-h incubations by 100% in adipose tissue from 80-kg swine. After a 26-h incubation period, INS maintained rates of glucose metabolism at levels comparable to maximally stimulated rates in fresh tissue. Insulin also enhanced glucose metabolism following 50-h incubations; however, rates were less than for 2- or 26-h incubations. Glucose metabolism was also stimulated in adipose tissue from 127-kg swine when incubated for 2 h with INS; however, INS responsiveness declined with increasing body weight. Lipogenesis and glucose oxidation were partially maintained by INS using tissue from the heavier swine. A pharmacological but not physiological concentration of pGH stimulated glucose metabolism in short-term incubations by 50% in adipose tissue from 80-kg swine, and by 10% in adipose tissue from 127-kg swine. Long-term culture of adipose tissue in the presence of pGH had no effect on glucose metabolism. Physiological levels of pGH directly antagonized the stimulation of glucose metabolism by INS in short- and long-term incubations. In summary, these results are the first to establish that swine adipose tissue is quite sensitive to insulin and that pGH directly antagonizes insulin action.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to report the aterial blood gas findings in dogs with bacterial pneumonia. Arterial blood gas samples were collected from 62 dogs with culture-confirmed bacterial pneumonia. These results were compared with 46 normal dog arterial blood gas samples. Results demonstrated that respiratory acidosis was not a problem in dogs with pneumonia in this study. Significant evidence of hypoxemia was noted with abnormal mean values in PaO2 (P<0.001) and the Alveolar-arterial (A-α) gradient (P<0.001).  相似文献

Treatment with a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device between days 5 and 12 after estrus elevated (p less than 0.05) plasma progesterone concentrations between days 6 and 8 in comparison with controls. Treatment with injectable progesterone (200 mg) on days 5, 7, 9 and 11 postestrus did not increase plasma progesterone concentrations over controls. The administration of 1500 IU human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) on day 5 after estrus resulted in a sustained increase (p less than 0.01) in plasma progesterone concentrations from day 8 until day 20 when measurements ceased. Pregnancy rates, as a result of artificial insemination (AI) at the pretreatment estrus, in these treatments (n = 12-14 each), were unaffected by any of the treatments and ranged from 57.1 to 75.0% at 45-60 days post-AI. In a field trial, of 36 repeat breeder cows treated with 1500 IU hCG 5.5 days after insemination, 47.2% were pregnant at 60 days, whereas 39.5% of saline-treated controls were diagnosed pregnant. Treatment with hCG significantly (p less than 0.05) increased milk progesterone concentrations over controls on days 14 and 20 after insemination.  相似文献
