Analysis of fat-soluble vitamins. XVI. Antirachitic activity of 5,6-trans-vitamin D3 alone and in the presence of 5,6-cis-vitamin D3 resin, using chick bioassays.

Two biological assays were conducted in which the antirachitic activity in chicks of 5,6-trans-vitamin D3 added to feed is compared with that of 5,6-cis-vitamin D3. On the basis of the results obtained it is concluded that the relative potency of the trans isomer is, at the most, 5% and that the antirachitic activity of the trans isomer is not markedly enhanced (an increase to a relative potency of 16%, at the most) if the cis isomer is also included in the diet. The results are not conclusive on the inhibition or lack of inhibition of the antirachitic activity of 5,6-cis-vitamin D3 by the presence of 5,6-trans-vitamin D3 in the feed.     

Laboratory incubation studies of chlorophenoxyacetic acids in chernozemic soils

The relative persistence of 2,4-D, MCPA and 2,4,5-T in some Saskatchewan soils was assessed under laboratory conditions. Under moist conditions, 2,4-D and MCPA showed half-life times of between 14 and 41 days but the MCPA half-life was usually 1 or 2 days longer. 2,4,5-T exhibited a half-life period over twice the length of the other chemicals. The half-life times were directly correlated to microbial plate counts, the larger numbers of soil microorganisms being associated with shorter residence times. Half-lives depended on soil moisture content and the best moisture levels for chemical loss appeared to be just less than field capacity. The use of ¹⁴C in 2,4-D incubation studies showed that the initial cleavage of the 2,4-D molecule was associated with the ether linkage and was not a decarboxylation.     

Peridermium pini (Pers.) Lev. and the Resin-top Disease of Scots Pine: II. Lesion Anatomy

The stages in the formation of Peridermium pini lesions aredescribed. The hyphae of the parasite were septate, uninucleate,and intercellular, with unbranched haustoria penetrating allphloem cells and xylem parenchyma cells. Lesion extension occurredby apical growth of the hyphae along the outer edge of the functionalphloem. The hyphae stretched unbroken across the active cambium.Active centripetal and longitudinal growth of the mycelium occurredin the resin ducts of the xylem, the hyphae commonly reachingthe pith. Spermogonia were produced in late summer and fall,aecia appeared in spring. In lesion xylem, tracheids were shorter,rays taller, more numerous and wider, but ray cell height remainedunchanged. Fusiform rays increased in number and size and verticalresin ducts increased in number. Changes in xylem tissues didnot become evident until two to four years after invasion ofthe cambium by the mycelium. Invasion of the secondary phloemresulted in an increase in number and size of the longitudinalphloem parenchmya cells, while changes in phloem rays were similarto those in xylem rays.     

THE USE OF TIMBER IN MINING

The paper considers briefly the history of the use of timberunderground and the general problem of support and goes on todiscuss the two main uses for timber in mining, i.e. on roadwaysand at the coal face, where the two principal methods of workingare pillar and stall working and longwall working. Species whosetimber is useful for supports are listed and the various kindsof supports given together with the chief factors affectingtheir behaviour. Replacement of timber by steel is discussed,and in considering the outlook for home-grown timber props emphasisis laid on the need to supply only the best types properly preparedand seasoned.     

Errata

In the paper "The Effect of Choline-Deficiency on Uterine Activity of Rats," by Kraatz and Gruber (Science, March 25), the tenth line from the end, p. 312, ". . . choline every second" should be amended to read "...choline every second day."
