The relationship of steam cooking time with cellular strength of cultivars Chieftain, Kennebec, Russet Burbank and White Rose was compared within and among solids concentrations. Nitrogen fertilization had no discernible effect on cell wall strength. Cell strength of Kennebec and Russet Burbank was similar regardless of solids concentration or cooking time. However, cell strength of Chieftain and White Rose differed with solids concentration and cooking time. Knowledge of cell strength and its characteristics with cooking time appear important for understanding the differences in textural quality that exists between cultivars. 相似文献

The oil content of par-fried frozen French fries prepared by two methods, conventional and freeze-leached, was not affected by blanch temperatures when blanched for 15 minutes. Melting points of the frying oil did affect the oil content of par-fried French fries. The differences were variable and could not be explained by melting point alone. Blowing the potato strips with ambient air after the par-fry and cooling below the melting point of the frying oil had no effect on the oil content of the frozen product. Contrary to previous reports, the oil content of the French fries increased significantly as the par-frying temperature was increased from 160.0 to 185°C (320 to 365°F) with the greatest increase occurring between 171.1 and 185.0°C (340 and 365°F). The French fries par-fried 1 min at 171.1 and 185.0°C (340 and 365°F) were judged to have identical quality after finish frying 3 minutes at 185.0°C (365°F). A lower par-fry temperature or possibly a shorter par-fry time at the higher temperature would be an advantage to the processor who could use less oil and energy without adversely affecting the quality of the final consumable product. 相似文献

An adult female red deer died of a severe seizure and dysbasia. Postmortem computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed. On CT, deciduous right maxillary second and third premolar teeth were observed, and the right infraorbital canal was disrupted. MRI showed that the right trigeminal nerve was enlarged and the right subarachnoid cavity was occupied by fluid and gas. On gross examination, the right paranasal sinus, swollen muscles of the orbit and tonsils, right trigeminal nerve, and right cerebrum surface contained a yellowish-white, cheese-like pus. Based on these findings, the deer was believed to have developed pyogenic meningitis caused by a neuropathic infection secondary to periodontogenic paranasal sinusitis. 相似文献

The definitive hosts of Metagonimus hakubaensis are reported to be hamsters, rats, mice, dogs, cats, chickens, and quails in experimental infection and Japanese water shrews in natural infection. Here we report that raccoon dogs are new natural definitive hosts of M. hakubaensis, based on morphological and molecular analyses of Metagonimus flukes collected from the host species from Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Moreover, M. hakubaensis recovered from raccoon dogs showed higher fecundity than those recovered from Japanese water shrews. IRAK-4 is a protein kinase that is pivotal in mediating signals for innate immune responses. Here, we report that IRAK-4 signaling is also essential for eliciting adaptive immune responses. Thus, in the absence of IRAK-4, in vivo T cell responses were significantly impaired. Upon T cell receptor stimulation, IRAK-4 is recruited to T cell lipid rafts, where it induces downstream signals, including protein kinase C activation through the association with Zap70. This signaling pathway was found to be required for optimal activation of nuclear factor kappaB. Our findings suggest that T cells use this critical regulator of innate immunity for the development of acquired immunity, suggesting that IRAK-4 may be involved in direct signal cross talk between the two systems. 相似文献

The medicinal plant Brucea javanica (L.) Merr. (Simaroubaceae) is widely distributed throughout Asia where its bitter fruits have been used in traditional medicine for various ailments. Fifteen C-20 quassinoids were isolated from the fruits of B. javanica and examined for their in vitro antitrypanosomal activities against trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma evansi. Bruceine A, bruceantinol, bruceine C, brusatol, and bruceine B showed strong antitrypanosomal activities with IC(50) values in the range of 2.9-17.8nM, which compared well with the standard trypanocidal drugs diminazene aceturate (IC(50)=8.8nM) and suramin (IC(50)=43.2nM). However, dehydrobruceine A, dehydrobruceine B, and dehydrobrusatol were about 2100, 900, and 1200 times less active, respectively, than bruceine A, bruceine B, and brusatol. The relationship of the structure and antitrypanosomal activity of these quassinoid compounds suggested that the presence of a diosphenol moiety in ring A and the nature of the C-15 side chain are important for their activities against T. evansi. A latex agglutination test for detecting Echinococcus multilocularis coproantigen in definitive hosts was developed using latex beads sensitized with EmA9 monoclonal antibody raised against somatic antigens of adult E. multilocularis. A primary test (LA 1) was performed on 82 fecal samples of necropsied foxes, of which 46 were infected, and resulted in 61% sensitivity and 86% specificity. To increase the sensitivity, 4 ng/mL of excretory/secretory antigens of adult worms was added to the samples in a secondary test (LA 2), resulting in 91% sensitivity and 61% specificity. The positive predictive value of the LA 1 test and the negative predictive value of the LA 2 test were both 85%. The combination of the LA 1 and LA 2 tests is applicable and practical for use in situations that require quick diagnosis or screening based on the following interpretation: the samples that are positive in the LA 1 test are positive; the samples that are negative in the LA 2 test are negative; and the samples that are negative in the LA 1 test and positive in the LA 2 test are classified as suspicious. 相似文献
