Malignant fibrous histiocytoma in a Djungarian hamster

A subcutaneous malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) was observed in the region between the right posterior trunk and right hind limb of a 2-year-old male Djungarian hamster weighing 45 g. Histologically, the tumor consisted of bizarre multinucleated giant cells, histiocytic cells, and fibroblastic cells with a storiform pattern, and was considered to be of the storiform-pleomorphic type of MFH. Severe nuclear atypia with prominent nucleoli and many mitotic figures was also observed. Electron microscopy demonstrated fibroblastic cells and histiocytic cells. The fibroblastic cells were spindle-shaped, and sometimes had an invaginated nucleus. The histiocytic cells were polygonal with an oval or kidney-shaped nucleus. The cytoplasm of both cells contained numerous free ribosomes, small amounts of rough endoplasmic reticulum, and round mitochondria. Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for vimentin, and were thought to be of undifferentiated mesenchymal cell origin. This is the first report of spontaneous MFH in a hamster.     

Effect of Japanese catfish Silurus asotus lipid intake on the lipid components of plasma and liver in adult mice

SUMMARY: The effect of Japanese catfish Silurus asotus lipid intake on the lipid metabolism of male adult mice was determined by measuring the total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, phospholipid, and fatty acid content of plasma and liver. Mice were fed diets containing 5% lard, 5% Thai catfish oil, 5% Japanese catfish lipids, or 5% sardine lipids for 4 weeks. The arachidonic acid (20 : 4n-6) content was highest in the livers of mice fed the Japanese catfish lipid diet and docosahexaenoic acid (22 : 6n-3) content was higher in livers of the Japanese catfish lipid and sardine lipid diet groups than those of the lard and Thai catfish diet groups. However, no significant differences were observed in the 22 : 6n-3 levels in either plasma or liver between the Japanese catfish lipid and sardine lipid diet groups. Although the Japanese catfish lipid diet contains, by far, the highest cholesterol content (143 mg/100 g), there was no significant difference in the plasma cholesterol levels between the lard, Thai catfish oil and Japanese catfish lipid diet groups. However, the liver cholesterol levels of mice fed the Japanese catfish lipid diet were lower than those of mice fed the Thai catfish oil diet, and were similar to those of animals fed a sardine lipid diet. These results suggest that Japanese catfish lipids are suitable components of the diet for ingestion of 20 : 4n-6 and 22 : 6n-3, and for decreasing the cholesterol content of liver.     

Investigation on the contamination of field crops by artificial radioactivities as a result of the H-bomb tests at Bikini Atoll

Introduction

As a result of the H-bomb explosion tests of the U.S.A. in the Southern Pacific Ocean, rain-out in Japan is contaminated considerably by fission products, and field crops also show apparently artificial radioactivities. Many workers are now investigating to clarify degree and regional extent of contamination or sorts of radioactive elements.     

Einfluss vom in der mülldeponie gebildeten gas auf den boden

Es wurde der Einftuß vom aus der mit Erde bedeckte Mülldeponie entqundenen Gas auf die mikrobiologischen und chemischen Eigenschaften des Oberbodens untersucht. Auf dem einer Deponie benachbarten Acker wurde das Pflanzenwachstum beeinträchtigt. Sein Bodenprofil war teilweise bläulichschwarz gefärbt. Seine Bodenluft war durch O₂-Abnahme und CH₄ und CO₂-Zunahme gekennzeichnet. Durch den Brutversuch mit sterilisierten und unsterilisierten Bodenproben unter Zusatz von CH₄ konnte seine Oxydation durch Mikroorganismen bestätigt werden. Durch das Einfließen des kohlenwasserstoffreichen, sauerstoffarmen Gases und durch den mikrobiellen O₂-Verbrauch entstanden anaerobe Verhältnisse. Hierdurch ergaben sich Reduktionen von Fe-, Mn-, N-, und S-Verbindungen, und eine Senkung des Redoxpotentials. Wurde feldfrische Feinerde im Becberglas bebrütet, nahm angereichertes Fe²⁺ sehr schnell, Mn²⁺ dagegen langsamer ab. Die Wachstumsstörung sollte auf Sauerstoffmangel, der Gegenwart von Schwefelwasserstoff und Mangan-Überachuß im Boden beruhen.     

Experimental infection in specific-pathogen-free chicks with avian reovirus and avian nephritis virus isolated from broiler chicks showing runting syndrome

Avian reovirus (ARV) and avian nephritis virus (ANV) were individually isolated from runty 10-day-old broiler chicks. The ARV isolate, IR-R, the ANV isolate, IR-N, and the reference strain of ANV, G-4260, were inoculated orally into 1-day-old chicks of two specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chicken lines, 151 and PDL-1. Growth retardation without the presence of gross lesions was clearly observed at 7 and 14 days postinoculation (PI) in chicks of both lines inoculated with the IR-R strain. On the other hand, in chicks inoculated with IR-N strain, growth retardation was observed only in the chicks of line 151 at 7 and 14 days PI. Microscopically, nephritis was observed in both chicken lines at 7 and 14 days PI. When chicks that were inoculated with the IR-N strain at 1 day of age were inoculated with the IR-R strain at 3 days of age, growth retardation was observed in the chicks of line PDL-1 at 10 and 17 days PI. However, the growth retardation was less severe than in the group receiving a single inoculation of the IR-R strain.
