During 1982 and 1985, blood samples from 705 equids were examined for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. By indirect immunofluorescence staining, IgM and total immunoglobulin (IgM and IgG) antibodies were detected in 37 (5.3%) and 90 (12.8%) serum specimens, respectively. The geometric mean titer for IgM antibody (140.4) was highest during July, whereas total immunoglobulin ranged from 94.1 in October to 338 in May. Eighty-six equids with total immunoglobulin to B burgdorferi lived in areas of Connecticut where the primary tick vector, Ixodes dammini, was present. Of the 86 equids, 9 from Lyme, Connecticut and Westchester County, New York had antibodies to B burgdorferi and developed limb or joint disorders that resulted in single or recurrent episodes of lameness. 相似文献

The percentage of mononuclear phagocytes bearing the Fc receptor for immunoglobulin G, the percentage of cells phagocytic for Candida albicans and latex particles, and the phagocytic index for blood monocytes and alveolar macrophages from healthy dogs are reported. Blood monocytes were concentrated by density-gradient centrifugation, whereas alveolar macrophages were obtained in high yield by bronchoalveolar lavage. Adherent populations of those cells were used for functional assays after repeated washing to remove nonadherent cells. A greater percentage of adherent alveolar macrophages than adherent blood monocytes showed evidence of the Fc receptor for immunoglobulin G. Similarly, adherent alveolar macrophages showed significantly greater phagocytic ability, as measured by percent phagocytic cells and phagocytic index, using C albicans and latex particles, than did adherent canine blood monocytes. 相似文献

Sepsis is a frequent source of morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. The goal of this case control study was to measure hemostatic changes in dogs with naturally occurring sepsis. Blood was collected within 24 hours of admission from 20 dogs that fulfilled the criteria for sepsis. Sepsis was defined as histologic or microbiological confirmation of infection and 2 or more of the following criteria: hypo- or hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, or leukopenia, leukocytosis, or > 3% bands. Culture and sensitivities were performed on appropriate samples from all septic dogs. Twenty-eight control dogs were enrolled on the basis of normal results of physical examination, CBC, serum biochemistry, and coagulation profile. Plasma samples were analyzed for prothrombin time (PT), partial thromboplastin time (PTT), fibrin(ogen) degradation products (FDP), D-dimer (DD) concentrations, antithrombin (AT) activity, and protein C (PC) activity. Data were compared between groups by chi-square or independent t-tests. PC (P < .001) and AT (P < .001) activities were significantly lower in dogs with sepsis compared to controls. Dogs with sepsis had significantly higher PT (P = .007), PTT (P = .005), D-dimer (P = .005), and FDP (P = .001) compared to controls. Platelet counts were not significantly different between groups. Ten of the 20 septic dogs (50%) died, but no association was identified between any of the measured variables and outcome. These findings are consistent with previous studies in animals with experimentally induced disease and in clinical studies of humans. On the basis of these results, further investigation of the role of AT and PC in canine sepsis is warranted. 相似文献

Traumatic body wall hernias (TBWH) are serious sequelae to traumatic injury in dogs and cats. During the study period, 26 dogs and 10 cats with surgically managed TBWH were identified. Five cases (four dogs, one cat) did not have their hernias identified during the first 24 hours of hospitalization. Bite wounds were the most common cause of TBWH, accounting for 54% of canine and 40% of feline hernias. Twelve cases (nine dogs, three cats) had serious intra-abdominal injuries diagnosed in addition to their TBWH. Seventy-three percent of dogs and 80% of cats survived to hospital discharge. In addition, the authors report the occurrence of a unique cause of herniation, termed an autopenetrating hernia. 相似文献

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is a bacterium responsible for a respiratory disease in turkeys and chickens and has been identified as one of the emerging respiratory bacterial pathogens. The clinical signs and lesions caused by ORT are very similar to those caused by other respiratory infectious agents; therefore, an accurate diagnostic test is necessary to identify the infection. In this study, we have investigated the use of outer membrane proteins of ORT in an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the exposure to ORT infection. Outer membrane proteins of ORT were extracted and used as an antigen in ELISA to detect infection in turkeys exposed to different serotypes of ORT. The ELISA results were compared with the conventional serum plate agglutination test. The agglutination test detected specific antibodies for ORT in 65% of experimentally infected turkeys during the first 2 wk of infection. The ELISA detected up to 100% of infected birds for 8 wk postinfection. The results suggest that ELISA is able to detect the exposure to ORT in later stages of the infection and this assay can be used in serologic surveillance of ORT infection for poultry in the field. 相似文献

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, pleomorphic bacterium that has been isolated from flocks of turkeys and broilers from around the world. Infections cause respiratory disease, mortality, and growth suppression, or clinical signs of infection may be absent. In layers, there have been few reports of disease caused by O. rhinotracheale. ABSTRACT Translocation of (14)C-labeled fluquinconazole was measured using combustion analysis and radio thin-layer-chromatographic analysis in seedling wheat leaves uninfected and infected with Mycosphaerella graminicola. Two isolates were used with differing sensitivity to demethylation inhibitor fungicides. Fluquinconazole was translocated acropetally, but not basipetally. Fluquinconazole accumulated around infection sites within 6 days after treatment. Accumulation occurred before M. graminicola hyphae had colonized the host mesophyll further than one host cell around the invasion site. This suggested that the accumulation was caused by a host response to infection. Infrared gas analysis showed that rates of transpiration and stomatal conductance in inoculated leaves were significantly increased very soon after inoculation but net photosynthesis was decreased. The actual mechanism of fungicide accumulation was not determined. 相似文献

Given the expectations of clients and the resultant impact of end-of-life conversations on pet owners and the veterinary team, compassionate end-of-life communication is considered to be an ethical obligation, a core clinical skill, and integral to the success of a veterinary team. End-of-life communication is related to significant clinical outcomes, including enduring veterinarian-client-patient relationships and veterinarian and client satisfaction. Effective techniques for end-of-life communication can be taught and are a series of learned skills. The purpose of this article is to present best practices for delivering bad news and euthanasia decision-making discussions. In this article, the SPIKES six-step model (setting, perception, invitation, knowledge, empathize, and summarize) currently employed in medical curricula is utilized to structure end-of-life conversations in veterinary medicine. 相似文献

The recent upgrade in IVP technology seen in cattle can be adapted to embryo production in small ruminants to overcome limitations exhibited by surgical procedures on preserving the reproductive potential of donors and the efficiency of embryo production. The aim of the present study was to assess the current procedures used in cattle for the production of IVP embryos in goats and sheep based on laparoscopic-aided ovum pick-up (LOPU) supplied oocytes. Sexually matured goat and sheep donors were treated during the breeding season with FSH and subjected to laparoscopic-guided follicular puncture under general anaesthesia. The collected cumulus-oocyte complexes were matured in medium 199 and fertilized by frozen-thawed spermatozoa using Talp medium supplemented with heparin and oestrus-sheep serum. Cleaved ova were either cultured in sheep in vitro fertilization medium plus amino acids or transferred to sheep oviducts. Blastocyst rate, hatching rate and development rate up to term were used as markers of embryo function. The results obtained for goat and sheep involving 30 and 35 donors respectively (10 and 9 LOPU sessions) were 81.2% and 85.2% of oocyte collection rate; 88.3% and 98.6% oocyte incubation rate; 85.6% and 76.0% fertilization rate; 82.4% and 93.4% of cleavage rate; 50.0% and 61.5% IVP blastocyst rate; 42.1% and 45.5% blastocyst rate in oviducts; 73.0% and 66.7% embryo survival up to term, respectively. The results are comparable to those obtained in small ruminants and in bovines suggesting that requirements for embryo production and development are similar. 相似文献
