Two field experiments were conducted in April (early cropping) and August, (late cropping) 2007 at the Department of Crop Science Research Farm, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to evaluate the agronomic and yield attributes of 13 cultivars of bambara groundnut. The results obtained showed that planting dates had significant effects (P < 0.05) on all traits measured. Significant cultivar and cultivar x planting date interaction effects were observed for days to 50% flowering. The principal component analysis showed that the first three components accounted for 85.18 and 86.81% of the total variation in the early and late planting, respectively. The traits representing the cultivars along the first principal axis were number of pods per plant and seed weight per plant for the early planting and number of leaves per plant and seed weight per plant in the late planting. Cultivars were differentiated on the basis of number of flowers per plant and plant height for the early planting and days to emergence for the late planting along the second principal axis. The cluster plot revealed that the 13 bambara groundnut cultivars were grouped into three clusters at both the early and late planting dates. In the early planting, the cultivars in cluster I are associated with high number of flowers, number of pods, and plant height, while cluster II cultivars flowered earlier and had good pod and seed yield. However, cluster III cultivars performed poorly in all the traits evaluated. During the late planting, the cluster I comprised early flowering cultivars while cluster II comprised cultivars with good vegetative growth, high number of pods per plant and seed weight per plant. Cluster III cultivars are early emerging and early flowering but have poor seed yield. The correlation coefficient for seed weight per plant was highly significant and positive with number of leaves per plant, plant height, number of flowers per plant and number of pods per plant indicating that increase in these traits will ultimately increase seed weight per plant. Thus, these traits could be considered as major seed yield contributing traits that could be given significant recognition during selection.  相似文献

In plant breeding, correlations between the statistics of stability and adaptability of popcorn cultivars are not yet well understood. Therefore, the objectives of the present experiment was to investigate the correlations between sdi2 \sigma_{\rm di}^{2} and bi \beta_{\rm i} from Eberhart and Russell, ωi from Wricke, \textS\texti(1) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(1)} , \textS\texti(2) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(2)} and \textS\texti(3) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(3)} from Huehn, Pi from Lin and Binns and the rank-sum from Kang, and indicate the most reliable method for selecting popcorn cultivars. These statistics were estimated by data of crop yield from 19 Brazilian genotypes under 21 environments and popping expansion under 16 environments. The ωi, \textS\texti(1) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(1)} , \textS\texti(2) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(2)} , \textS\texti(3) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(3)} and sdi2 \sigma_{\rm di}^{2} were positively and significantly correlated indicating that just one in these five statistics is sufficient for selecting stable genotypes although they were not correlated with the means of crop yield and popping expansion. The bi \beta_{\rm i} was negatively and significantly correlated with Pi for crop yield indicating that the most adaptable genotypes tend to have the lowest estimates of Pi. Although Pi was not correlated with ωi, \textS\texti(1) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(1)} , \textS\texti(2) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(2)} , \textS\texti(3) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(3)} , or sdi2 \sigma_{\rm di}^{2} statistics, it displayed positive correlation with the Index 1 (crop yield and popping expansion +  \textS\texti(1) {\text{S}}_{\text{i}}^{(1)} rank) and Index 2 (crop yield and popping expansion + Wi) indicating that superior popcorn genotypes are also stable. Finally, both Pi and the rank-sum are useful statistics in breeding programmes where crop yield, popping expansion and stability are essential traits for selecting genotypes.  相似文献

Corn leaf aphids (Rhopalosiphum maidis Fitch) are found throughout the year on maize in Hawaii and occasionally cause yield loss. Sweet corn inbred Hi38-71 was observed to have high field resistance to aphids and was chosen for this genetic study. An artificial infestation technique was developed using hair-pin clip cages (2.2 cm diameter) which we devised and built. The cages were applied to field-grown plants into which three wingless viviparous adults were placed. Aphid populations were classified on a 1–10 rating scale after about 2 weeks based on digital images of the cages. Mean aphid coverage ratings were 2.97 for the resistant parent and 7.28 for the susceptible parent (representing >200 insects per cage). The F1 hybrids showed similar susceptibility (6.72), showing resistance to be recessive in nature. Six generations of the cross between Hi38-71 and susceptible inbred Hi27 were artificially infested to provide a generation mean analysis of 360 treated plants over two growing seasons. A joint scaling test showed that the fit to a 3-parameter additive-dominance model satisfactorily explained the observed variability with no assumed linkage or epistasis. We conclude that resistance to corn leaf aphid in Hi38-71 is conferred by a single recessive gene labeled aph. These results concur with a previous study under uncontrolled natural infestation in a single environment. The hair-pin clip cage method was most effective in distinguishing resistant and susceptible genotypes under diverse natural growing conditions in Hawaii.  相似文献

A triploid hybrid with an ABC genome constitution, produced from an interspecific cross between Brassica napus (AACC genome) and B. nigra (BB genome), was used as source material for chromosome doubling. Two approaches were undertaken for the production of hexaploids: firstly, by self-pollination and open-pollination of the triploid hybrid; and secondly, by application of colchicine to axillary meristems of triploid plants. Sixteen seeds were harvested from triploid plants and two seedlings were confirmed to be hexaploids with 54 chromosomes. Pollen viability increased from 13% in triploids to a maximum of 49% in hexaploids. Petal length increased from 1.3 cm (triploid) to 1.9 cm and 1.8 cm in the two hexaploids and longest stamen length increased from 0.9 cm (triploid) to 1.1 cm in the hexaploids. Pollen grains were longer in hexaploids (43.7 and 46.3 μm) compared to the triploid (25.4 μm). A few aneuploid offsprings were also observed, with chromosome number ranging from 34 to 48. This study shows that trigenomic hexaploids can be produced in Brassica through interspecific hybridisation of B. napus and B. nigra followed by colchicine treatment.  相似文献

Test environment evaluation has become an increasingly important issue in plant breeding. In the context of indirect selection, a test environment can be characterized by two parameters: the heritability in the test environment and its genetic correlation with the target environment. In the context of GGE biplot analysis, a test environment is similarly characterized by two parameters: its discrimination power and its similarity with other environments. This paper investigates the relationships between GGE biplots based on different data scaling methods and the theory of indirect selection, and introduces a heritability-adjusted (HA) GGE biplot. We demonstrate that the vector length of an environment in the HA-GGE biplot approximates the square root heritability (\( \sqrt H \)) within the environment and that the cosine of the angle between the vectors of two environments approximates the genetic correlation (r) between them. Moreover, projections of vectors of test environments onto that of a target environment approximate values of \( r\sqrt H \), which are proportional to the predicted genetic gain expected in the target environment from indirect selection in the test environments at a constant selection intensity. Thus, the HA-GGE biplot graphically displays the relative utility of environments in terms of selection response. Therefore, the HA-GGE biplot is the preferred GGE biplot for test environment evaluation. It is also the appropriate GGE biplot for genotype evaluation because it weights information from the different environments proportional to their within-environment square root heritability. Approximation of the HA-GGE biplot by other types of GGE biplots was discussed.  相似文献

Chinese cultivar Jingzhouheimai of Secale cereale L. confers resistance to several important wheat diseases, making it a useful resource for wheat improvement. Octoploid amphiploid (2n = 8x = 56; AABBDDRR) was synthesized by hybridization of Jingzhouheimai with hexaploid wheat landrace Huixianhong and doubling of the F1 chromosome number. This amphiploid was backcrossed to the wheat parent to produce wheat-rye chromosome addition lines. The existing six disomic addition lines (all except 6R) were screened with 16 rye-specific DNA markers and three putative markers for 6R were identified. These markers were used in selection of chromosome 6R addition lines, confirmed by the genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). In this manner, seven monosomic 6R and five disomic addition were selected, as well as one mono-telosomic 6RS addition, one mono-telosomic and one ditelosomic 6RL additions. In turn these 6R addition lines were used to develop additional 15 6R-specific markers of which six were allocated to the arm 6RS and nine to 6RL. Screening for the powdery mildew resistance identified chromosome arm 6RL as the carrier of the resistance locus. Therefore, DNA markers identified as specific to the 6RL arm can be used to monitor the introgression of the resistance locus into wheat.  相似文献

Diversity of food-grade soybeans is critical for utilization of genetic resources in cultivar development, germplasm enhancement, and end-product commercialization. The objective of this study was to assess seed quality attributes and phenotypic variability among 54 U.S. and 51 Asian food-grade cultivars and breeding lines. The results showed greater genetic diversity of protein content, calcium content, seed hardness, and seed size uniformity than other quality traits in both small- and large-seeded genotypes evaluated in this study. Among the small-seeded soybeans, the U.S. genotypes were more diverse and exhibited higher swell ratio and oil content but lower stone seed ratio and protein content than Asian accessions. Among the large-seeded accessions, U.S. genotypes had higher stone seed ratio and oil content but lower swell ratio and protein content, and were less diverse than Asian genotypes. The characterization of diverse food-grade soybeans will facilitate parent selection in specialty soybean breeding.  相似文献

Genotypic variation in stomatal density and size has been reported but little is known of the genetic mechanisms behind these leaf traits. Using 101 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between a tropical japonica, IR69093-41-3-2-2 and an indica variety, IR72, we conducted a field study to determine stomatal density and size and identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling these traits under lowland conditions. Ten QTLs for stomatal density and four QTLs for size were identified across growth stages and leaf surfaces (adaxial and abaxial). The contribution of each QTL to total phenotypic variation ranged from 9.3 to 15.2% for stomatal density and 9.7 to 14.3% for size. The allele from IR72 increased stomatal density and that from IR69093-41-3-2-2 increased size. The expression of the QTLs for stomatal density and size differed by growth stage indicating that these traits might be genetically controlled depending on growth stage or that each QTL had a different function by growth stage. Significant negative genetic correlations between stomatal density and size at both vegetative (r = −0.308**) and heading (r = −0.484**) stages were observed but no common QTL for these traits was detected across growth stages and leaf surfaces. These results indicate that the QTLs for density and size may neither be genetically linked nor pleiotropically controlled and findings can be used as basis for selection at the leaf level on the balance of carbon and water uptake. Further study is needed to fully understand the mechanism underlying the observed genetic association and to elucidate the function of the QTLs involved.  相似文献

Open pollinated maize varieties are one of the best options for farmers who cannot afford the cost of hybrids, cultivating maize in low potential environments and cannot pay for inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides. The experiment was conducted to use farmers’ input and feedback on selection of well-adapted, high-yielding, and disease-tolerant maize varieties. Treatments were arranged incompletely randomized block design with three replications. Gibe-1 was better preferred open pollinated maize variety by famers due its cob length, disease tolerance, good husk cover and yield. Gibe-1 provided the highest grain yield in South Achefer (8.8 t ha-1) and the best performing genotype across environments with grain yield of 7.8 t ha-1. Gibe-1 also had a good reaction to common leaf rust and tercicum leaf blight. GGE biplot analysis classified testing environments in to four mega environments and showed high influence of the environment to grain yield with the contribution of variation 59.59% by the environment, 7.25% by the genotype, and 18.38% by interaction. Gibe-1 was identified as the most ideal open pollinated maize variety which produced the highest mean grain yield and was the most stable. Therefore, Gibe-1 is recommended as a potential open pollinated maize variety for Jabitehinan, South Achefer, and similar agro ecologies.  相似文献

Polyamines [i.e. spermine (Spm), spermidine (Spd) and putrescine (Put)] antagonistic effects on stress imposed by 2.0 mM lead (Pb2+) on growth, yield and its components and changes in the osmoprotectant and endogenous Pb2+ concentrations, the contents of some nutrients and tissue health in wheat plants were evaluated. Under the three applied polyamine (PAs) applications, the efficiency of wheat plants to tolerate Pb2+ stress in terms of growth and yield characteristics was noticed to varying degrees. The enhancements in osmoprotectant concentrations and plant health [in terms of relative water content (RWC) and membrane stability index (MSI)], and reductions in electrolyte leakage (EL) and plant Pb2+ concentration were correlated with the reasonable growth of Pb2+-stressed plants and their grain yield. Results point out that, better growth and yield characteristics, MSI, RWC, leaf photosynthetic pigment and osmoprotectant concentrations, and nutrient contents were obtained with seed soaking in 0.25 mM Spm, 0.50 mM Spd or 1.0 mM Put than those generated with seed soaking in water under 2.0 mM Pb2+ stress. In contrast, EL and the concentration of endogenous Pb2+ were significantly reduced. However, the Pb2+-free control positively exceeded the all stressed treatments. Among all tested PAs, 1.0 mM Put showed the best results and thus is recommended, as seed soaking, for wheat to grow well under Pb2+ stress.  相似文献
