Morbidity and mortality of preterm neonatal calves are higher than of calves born at normal term, possibly and in part due to immaturity of physiological functions. Physiological parameters were therefore studied during the first week of life in seven preterm calves, born on day 277 of gestation after dams were injected prostaglandin F2alpha and flumethason. Calves were fed colostrum of the first milking for the first 3 days and from day 4 to day 7 the same colostrum diluted with milk replacer. Body weight increased during the first week of life by 2.2 kg. Heart rate and respiratory rate were always relatively high, whereas values of rectal temperature, blood gases, haematological, metabolic and endocrine traits were in the range and behaved similarly as is the experience in full-term neonatal calves. Major exceptions were glucose and insulin, the concentrations of which barely rose postprandially, and growth hormone, the responses of which to growth hormone releasing factor analogue 1-29 were extremely variable and in part very small. In conclusion, calves born 2 week before normal term that survived the first week of life, although physiologically immature, were well able to handle ingested nutrients and to control their metabolism. 相似文献

A longitudinal study was conducted on the differential faecal egg counts, haematocrits and body condition scores of sheep belonging to resource-poor farmers at Rust de Winter, Gauteng province, and Kraaipan, North West Province, South Africa. The animals were scored for level of anaemia using the FAMACHA method, an assay for the clinical evaluation of anaemia caused by Haemonchus spp. Periods of higher Haemonchus egg counts occurred from October to March for sheep at Rust de Winter and from September/October to February or April for sheep at Kraaipan. Lower haematocrit values were registered during these periods as was a higher incidence of anaemic conjunctival mucous membrane colour scores compared to the period April to September. No clear relationship between the faecal egg counts and the body condition scores was evident. Although wider application of the FAMACHA system in sheep raised by resource-poor farmers should be investigated, the present study indicates that this method may certainly prove to be a valuable worm control strategy for such livestock owners. 相似文献

The genome of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV‐1) strain RacL11, a highly virulent isolate obtained from an aborted foal, and that of the modified live vaccine strain KyA, were cloned as bacterial artificial chromosomes (BAC) in Escherichia coli. Mini F plasmid sequences were inserted into the viral genomes by homologous recombination instead of the gene 71 (EUS4) open reading frame after co‐transfection of viral DNA and recombinant plasmid pΔ71‐pHA2 into RK13 cells. After isolation of recombinant viruses by three rounds of plaque purification, viral DNA was isolated from RK13 cells infected with RacL11 or KyA virus mutants expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP), and electroporated into Escherichia coli DH10B cells. Several bacterial colonies were shown to contain high‐molecular weight BAC DNA with a restriction enzyme fragment pattern indicative of the presence of full‐length RacL11 or KyA genomes. Two selected BAC clones were analysed by restriction enzyme analysis and Southern blotting, and were eventually termed pRacL11 and pKyA, respectively. Upon transfection of pRacL11 or pKyA DNA into RK13 cells, GFP‐expressing fluorescing virus plaques could be identified from day 1 after transfection. Infectivity after transfection of pRacL11 or pKyA could be readily propagated on RK13 or equine cells, indicating that infectious full‐length DNA clones of strains RacL11 and KyA were successfully cloned in Escherichia coli as BACs. The glycoprotein 2‐negative progeny reconstituted from pRacL11 and pKyA (L11Δgp2 and KyAΔgp2) exhibited different growth properties. Whereas both L11Δgp2 and KyAΔgp2 extracellular titres were reduced by 15‐ to 32‐fold, plaque diameters were only markedly (50%) reduced in the case of KyAΔgp2. 相似文献

A collection of 77 Staphylococcus intermedius isolates from dogs and cats in Switzerland was examined for resistance to erythromycin. Resistance profiles for 14 additional antibiotics were compared between erythromycin-resistant and susceptible isolates. A resistance prevalence of 27% for erythromycin was observed in the population under study. Complete correlation between resistance to erythromycin, and to spiramycin, streptomycin, and neomycin was observed. The erythromycin-resistant isolates all had a reduced susceptibility to clindamycin when compared to the erythromycin-susceptible isolates. Both constitutive and inducible resistance phenotypes were observed for clindamycin. Ribotyping showed that macrolide-aminoglycoside resistance was randomly distributed among unrelated strains. This suggests that this particular resistance profile is not related to a single bacterial clone but to the horizontal transfer of resistance gene clusters in S. intermedius populations. The erythromycin-resistant isolates were all carrying erm(B), but not erm(A), erm(C), or msr(A). The erm(B) gene was physically linked to Tn5405-like elements known as resistance determinants for streptomycin, streptothricin, neomycin and kanamycin. Analysis of the region flanking erm(B) showed the presence of two different groups of erm(B)-Tn5405-like elements in the S. intermedius population examined and of elements found in Gram-positive species other than staphylococci. This strongly suggests that erm(B) or the whole erm(B)-Tn5405-like elements in S. intermedius originate from other bacterial species, possibly from enterococci. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the cardiovascular effects of romifidine at doses ranging from 5 to 100 microg/kg of body weight, IV. ANIMALS: 25 clinically normal male Beagles. PROCEDURE: Romifidine was administered IV at a dose of 5, 10, 25, 50, or 100 microg/kg (n = 5/group). Heart rate, arterial pressure, central venous pressure, mean pulmonary arterial pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, body temperature, cardiac output, and PCV were measured immediately prior to and at selected times after romifidine administration. Cardiac index, stroke index, rate-pressure product, systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance indices, and left and right ventricular stroke work indices were calculated. Degree of sedation was assessed by an observer who was blinded to the dose administered. RESULTS: Romifidine induced a decrease in heart rate, pulmonary arterial pressure, rate-pressure product, cardiac index, and right ventricular stroke work index and an increase in central venous pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, and systemic vascular resistance index. In dogs given romifidine at a dose of 25, 50, or 100 microg/kg, an initial increase followed by a prolonged decrease in arterial pressure was observed. Arterial pressure immediately decreased in dogs given romifidine at a dose of 5 or 10 microg/kg. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that IV administration of romifidine induces dose-dependent cardiovascular changes in dogs. However, the 2 lowest doses (5 and 10 microg/kg) induced less cardiovascular depression, and doses > or = 25 microg/kg induced similar cardiovascular changes, suggesting that there may be a ceiling on the cardiovascular effects of romifidine. 相似文献

To clarify the influence of rearing conditions on the growth of various body parts of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), two groups reared under different conditions, i.e., a group born and reared in open enclosures (Enclosure group) and another consisting of macaques born and reared in cages (Caged group), were somatometrically analyzed. Somatometric data on 36 measures of various body parts were collected from 77 males and 92 females. Growth in many body parts was smaller in the Caged group than in the Enclosure group. Body parts that exhibited large incremental increases were more sensitive to differences in rearing space at the infantile growth stage in both sexes. Recovery from delayed growth at the pubertal growth stage was found in many body parts. However, the size of some locomotor elements such as the wrist and hand, and ankle and foot strongly reflected limitations of space and changes due to this were irreversible. Females were more sensitive than males to such differences in rearing conditions. We conclude that open enclosures with ample rearing space are necessary for the innate growth of Japanese macaques to occur. 相似文献

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) (a single intravenous injection with 0.042 mg busereline acetate) was administered to control stallions (n=5), aged stallions (n=5) and stallions with lack of libido (n=5). Jugular blood samples were taken at -10, 0, 10, 20, 40 and 80 minutes after treatment and measured for luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone concentrations. A single intravenous injection of hCG (3000 IE) was given 1 day later. Venous blood samples were taken at -60, 0, 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes after treatment and measured for the testosterone concentration. The experiment was performed in the breeding season. There was a wide variation between stallions in basal concentrations of LH and testosterone. The treatment groups all showed a significant increase in LH and testosterone concentrations after treatment with GnRH. There was a significant difference (P<0.05) between the control, the lack of libido stallions and the aged stallions in the production of LH before and after stimulation with GnRH. The aged stallions had higher basal LH concentrations. GnRH induced a rise in plasma LH in all groups, but the greatest response was observed in aged stallions. No response to GnRH was seen with respect to plasma testosterone. There was an increase in plasma testosterone following hCG; however, this increase was very small in aged stallions. After stimulation with hCG the control and lack of libido stallions had a significant increase (P<0.05) in testosterone production. In conclusion, stimulation with either GnRH or hCG can be a valuable method to test whether the function of the stallion's reproductive endocrine system is optimal. 相似文献
