Purpose

Are rare earth element (REE) patterns employable as tracers in human interventions of bulk soil disturbances, when high concentrations of metals are involved in the in situ soil disturbance? In terms of bulk soil disturbance, it is difficult to distinguish between bulk soil disturbances and emplacement of new earthen material. Chemical fingerprinting, in particular REE plus yttrium, is applied across many fields, but predominantlyin tracking the sources of potential environmental contaminants.

Materials and methods

The REE normalised patterns (HNO3:HF:HCl 3:1:1 digestion, ICP-MS) of two Calcaric Cambisols were compared with those of a Geric Ferralsol (Novic, Technic) originated from selective overburden of nickel mining (20°40′ N, 75°35′ W).

Results and discussion

The sum of REE, including Y and Sc, ranged between 48 and 101 mg kg?1. Principal component analysis (PCA) shows a discriminant role of REE. REE signature normalised to the upper continental crust shows slight positive Eu and negative Ce anomalies in the case of both Calcaric Cambisols, while the Geric Ferralsol shows anomalous patterns with the same anomalies plus a slight positive anomaly of Y, as a consequence of the addition of mining by-products.

Conclusions

Here, we show that REE patterns of the individual horizons of a soil have characteristics that allow us to distinguish undisturbed from soils mixed with other soil materials, including those with different pH values and high metal contents (e.g. Cr, Mn, and Ni ≥?0.5%, Fe ??5 wt%). Our results demonstrate, by using soils with contrasting characteristics, that their origins can be traced via the patterns of their REEs, even in the presence of high concentrations of other metals. In perspective, when background maps of all REE elements in soils are available worldwide on an appropriate scale, this enables us to obtain a level of discriminatory detail on a local scale.

The adsorption of three s-triazines (atrazine, terbutylazine, and simazine) on three different humic acids (HAs), before and after acidic hydrolysis, was studied at four diverse pH values from 3 to 4.5. The Freundlich sorption affinity (K(f)) and intensity (1/n) of s-triazines were related to the chemical and structural composition of HA and used in a multivariate statistical analysis. At low pH, the sorption values for s-triazines were not directly justified by the content of carboxyl groups in original HA, while only an increase of phenolic carbons in hydrolyzed HA supported the increased s-triazine adsorption. The structural composition of both s-triazines and humic samples explained 86% of the significance in multivariate analyses, whereas the role of pH remained hidden in only 14% of the statistical significance. Adsorption of s-triazines was mainly related to carbon content, hydrophobicity, and aromaticity of HA, thereby implying a predominant binding role of weak dispersive forces. Steric properties explained the larger adsorption affinity of atrazine and terbutylazine with respect to simazine. The occurrence of charge-transfer interactions between atrazine and mainly hydrolyzed HA was further suggested by the increased number of free radicals detected in atrazine-HA complexes at different pH values. Charge-transfer interactions were postulated to occur when HA conformations became progressively controlled by aromatic components. This work indicates that humic matter rich in hydrophobic and aromatic constituents is more likely to adsorb s-triazines and reduce their environmental mobility.  相似文献

The DMAC protocol (dexamethasone, melphalan, actinomycin‐D, cytarabine) has been evaluated in American studies for the treatment of relapsed canine lymphoma, comparing similarly to other rescue protocols. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficacy and toxicity of DMAC, in a larger UK cohort of resistant canine lymphomas. Medical records of dogs with resistant non‐Hodgkin high‐grade lymphomas that received DMAC as a rescue protocol were reviewed from 2007 to 2017. Response, time from initiation to discontinuation (TTD) and toxicity (Veterinary Cooperative Oncology Group criteria) were assessed. One hundred dogs were included; 86 received CEOP (modified CHOP including epirubicin) as first‐line treatment. Thirty‐five dogs (35%) responded: 21 complete responders (CRs) and 14 partial responders (PRs). Responders had significantly longer TTD (P < 0.001) compared with non‐responders: 62 days (range 28‐952) for CR vs 32 days (range 20‐70) for PR. Six CR received more than six cycles of DMAC (range 7‐36 cycles) and experienced a longer TTD (median 508, range 126‐952 days). Thrombocytopenia occurred in 45% (24 grade 1‐2, 21 grade 3‐4) and neutropenia in 36% of cases (29 grade 1‐2, 7 grade 3‐4). Gastrointestinal toxicity occurred in 42% of dogs (40 grade 1‐2, 2 grade 3‐4). Owing to chemotherapy toxicity, treatment was discontinued in five, and hospitalization required in six cases. In this study, response to DMAC was lower and of generally shorter duration than previously reported. Toxicity was high, but infrequently led to hospitalization or discontinuation of treatment.  相似文献

Treatment options for dogs with metastatic (stage III) splenic hemangiosarcoma are limited. A doxorubicin‐based chemotherapy regimen is commonly administered; however, there are no published data to support this practice. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of maximum‐tolerated‐dose chemotherapy (MTD), metronomic chemotherapy (MC) and no adjuvant treatment on outcome in dogs with stage III splenic hemangiosarcoma undergoing splenectomy. Medical records of dogs with stage III splenic hemangiosarcoma that underwent splenectomy followed by MTD chemotherapy, MC or no adjuvant treatment were retrieved. Time to progression (TTP), survival time (ST) and toxicity were evaluated. One hundred three dogs were identified: 23 received adjuvant MTD, 38 MC and 42 were not medically treated. Overall median TTP and ST were 50 (95% confidence interval [CI], 39‐61) and 55 days (95% CI, 43‐66), respectively. Dogs treated with adjuvant MTD had a significantly longer TTP and ST compared with dogs receiving MC (median TTP, 134 vs 52 days, P = .025; median ST, 140 vs 58 days, P = .023, respectively). Dogs treated by splenectomy only had the shortest median TTP (28 days) and ST (40 days). However, treatment‐related adverse events (AEs) were significantly more frequent in the MTD group (P = .017). The outcome for dogs with metastatic splenic hemangiosarcoma is poor. While MTD showed greater efficacy compared to MC, toxicity was higher in this group. Treatment‐related AEs need to be carefully balanced against this modest survival prolongation when offering adjuvant MTD to dogs with advanced stage hemangiosarcoma.  相似文献

This work reports a mortality outbreak, occurred in 2015 and affecting juveniles of European perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) farmed in Italy. Perch rhabdovirus (PRV) was detected by viral isolation and biomolecular investigations. Phylogenetic analysis clustered our isolate into genogroup B, which also includes PRV isolates from Perca fluviatilis identified in France (2004–2009); diagnostic investigations also revealed opportunistic bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila) and parasites (Chilodonella piscicola). Since, occasionally, PRV has been reported in the natural environment, which is often a source of eggs and broodstock for farms, it could be possible that both similar France and Italian isolate were imported from a same place elsewhere and have a common origin. Improving biosecurity measures (batch control) and disinfection of egg strings with an iodine‐based solution helps prevent apparent vertical transmission of PRV.  相似文献

In this work we detected the extent of variability at nuclear and cytoplasmic DNA level of regenerated plants belonging to Solanum genotypes with a different genetic background and somatic chromosome number. As for the nuclear characterization, a total of 66 (18.5%) polymorphic bands were scored using 13 ISSR primers on 45 randomly selected regenerants. Our results show that the regenerants obtained from clone cmm 1T and, at lower level, those from cph 1C are unstable under in vitro conditions or rather more prone to in vitro-induced stress leading to somaclonal variation than the other genotypes used. Two types of changes were observed: disappearance of parental ISSR fragments, termed “loss”; appearance of novel ISSR fragments, termed “gain”. The most frequent event occurring in the regenerants was the loss of fragments (41 bands). Regenerated plants were analyzed with seven plastid universal primers to determine the cytoplasmic composition at chloroplast level. All cpDNA primer pairs tested produced amplicons of the same size in all genotypes analyzed and no polymorphic fragments were observed with any universal primers used. Our results show that under in vitro culture conditions genotype affects the integrity of the genome. In addition, the absence of polymorphism at plastid level confirms the greater genetic stability of cytoplasmic DNA.  相似文献

Artificial spawning may precipitate high mortalities of red-tail black shark (Epalzeorhynchos bicolor) broodstock from Streptococcus iniae infection. Two vaccine formulations (aluminum or oil adjuvant) were evaluated for effectiveness. Fish (mean weight 21.2 ± 5.7 g) were harvested, acclimatized, and vaccinated by intracoelomic injection. After 21 days, fish were moved to a biosecure laboratory and, one day later, simultaneously spawned and challenged by bath or by intracoelomic injection with S. iniae. Both formulations increased relative% survival (RPS) in unspawned (RPS [formulation]: 80 [aluminum]; 54 [oil]) and spawned fish (87–95 [aluminum]; 73–75 [oil]), suggesting that vaccination increases survival of red-tail black shark broodstock after spawning.  相似文献

The dynamics of the production of Stemphylium vesicarium conidia and Pleospora allii ascospores from different inoculum sources on the ground were compared in a model system of a wildflower meadow mainly composed of yellow foxtail, creeping cinquefoil and white clover. The meadow was either inoculated (each October) or not inoculated with a virulent strain of S. vesicarium, and either covered or not covered with a litter of inoculated pear leaves. Spore traps positioned a few centimetres above the ground were exposed for 170 7-day periods between October 2003 and December 2006. Ascospores and conidia were trapped in 46 and 25% of samples, respectively. Ascospore numbers trapped from the pear leaf litter were about five times higher than those from the meadow, while conidial numbers were similar from the different inoculum sources. The ascosporic season was very long, with two main trapping periods: December–April, and August–October; the former was most important for the leaf litter, the latter for the meadow. The conidial season lasted from April to November, with 92% of conidia caught between July and September. The fungus persistently colonized the meadow: the meadow inoculated in early October 2003 produced spores until autumn 2006. The present work demonstrates that orchard ground is an important source of inoculum for brown spot of pear. Thus, it is important to reduce inoculum by managing the orchard ground all year long.  相似文献
