Disposal of fish by‐products in the European Community must comply with Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 which categorizes animal by‐products according to risk, and specifies methods of disposal of by‐products according to that risk. There is provision under the regulation for composting or ensiling to be used for by‐products from aquatic animals. Biosecurity considerations require knowledge of the parameters of time and temperature, or time and pH, required to inactivate any fish pathogens that may be present. To provide those data, we undertook laboratory studies on the inactivation of a number of fish pathogenic viruses and bacteria at 60 °C, pH 4.0 and pH 12.0 as a preliminary to conducting subsequent trials with the most resistant viruses and bacteria in fish tissues. The most resistant bacterium to 60 °C, pH 4.0 as well as pH 12.0 was Lactococcus garvieae. Its concentration was reduced to the level of sensitivity of the test after 24–48 h exposure to 60 °C, but it survived for at least 7 days at pH 4.0 and 14 days at pH 12.0. The most resistant virus to 60 °C was infectious pancreatic necrosis virus, and to pH 12.0 was infectious salmon anaemia virus. The majority of the viruses tested survived exposure to pH 4.0 for up to 28 days. The results suggest that the process of acid ensiling alone is not an effective method for the inactivation of many viral and bacterial pathogens, and fish by‐products would need further treatment by a method approved under the regulation following ensiling, whereas alkaline or heat treatment are likely to provide an increased degree of biosecurity for on‐farm processing of mortalities.  相似文献

The continuous advances in surgical procedures require continuous research regarding materials with surgical applications. Biopolymers are widely studied since they usually provide a biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic material. Among them, chitosan is a promising material for the development of formulations and devices with surgical applications due to its intrinsic bacteriostatic, fungistatic, hemostatic, and analgesic properties. A wide range of products has been manufactured with this polymer, including scaffolds, sponges, hydrogels, meshes, membranes, sutures, fibers, and nanoparticles. The growing interest of researchers in the use of chitosan-based materials for tissue regeneration is obvious due to extensive research in the application of chitosan for the regeneration of bone, nervous tissue, cartilage, and soft tissues. Chitosan can serve as a substance for the administration of cell-growth promoters, as well as a support for cellular growth. Another interesting application of chitosan is hemostasis control, with remarkable results in studies comparing the use of chitosan-based dressings with traditional cotton gauzes. In addition, chitosan-based or chitosan-coated surgical materials provide the formulation with antimicrobial activity that has been highly appreciated not only in dressings but also for surgical sutures or meshes.  相似文献

A study was conducted in two greenhouses with a history of Fusarium crown and root rot (Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.radicis-lycopersici, Forl) and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne javanica andM. incognita). During the 2005–06 growing season, the effectiveness of soil disinfestation by solarization in combination with low doses of metham-sodium (500, 750, 1000 and 1250l ha−1) or dazomet (400 g ha−1), was tested against soilborne pathogens and nematodes in an attempt to find a suitable alternative to methyl bromide, which is soon to be phased out. Solarization alone was not effective in the greenhouse with a high incidence ofForl. In the greenhouse with a low level ofForl, all the treatments tested reduced disease incidence, and were therefore considered to be applicable for soil disinfestation. In addition, root-knot nematode density decreased with all the treatments tested in both of the greenhouses.  相似文献

A laboratory feeding test was conducted on queenless micro‐colonies of three bumblebee workers (Bombus terrestris L) to study the effects of low doses of imidacloprid on pollen and syrup consumption, worker survival, brood size and larval development. Two doses were used: D1 = 10 µg AI kg−1 in syrup and 6 µg AI kg−1 in pollen; D2 was 2.5 times higher in syrup and 2.7 higher in pollen. During 85 days 27, 30 and 29 micro‐colonies were reared for control, D1 and D2 treatments respectively. Food consumption was not affected by either dose. During the 5‐day pre‐oviposition period the mean insecticide intake was 4.8 ng per day per worker in treatment D2. Both doses slightly but significantly affected worker survival rate by 10% during the first month, without any dose‐effect relationship. Brood production was significantly reduced in D1 treatment and larval ejection by workers was significantly lower in D1 and D2 than in control. No significant effect of D1 and D2 treatments on the duration of larval development was revealed. No residue could be detected in workers still alive after 85 days. It was concluded that the survival rate and reproductive capacity of B terrestris was not likely to be affected by prolonged ingestion of nectar produced by sunflower after seed‐dressing treatment with imidacloprid (Gaucho), since honey or pollen collected by honeybees foraging treated sunflower never revealed concentrations of imidacloprid higher than 10 µg kg−1. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Experiments on grassed buffer strips have been conducted since 1993 by ITCF (Institut Technique des Céréales et des Fourrages) at three research farms (La Jaillière, Bignan and Plélo). Literature data and conclusions drawn from previous work with isoproturon and diflufenican were confirmed in a range of soil and cropping conditions: grassed buffer strips are effective in restricting pollutant transfer in runoff; those with widths of 6, 12 and 18 m reduced runoff volume by 43 to 99·9%, suspended solids by 87 to 100%, lindane losses by 72 to 100% and loss of atrazine and its metabolites by 44 to 100%. More than 99% of isoproturon and 97% of diflufenican residues in runoff were removed by buffer strips. Nitrate and soluble phosphorus in runoff were reduced by 47 to 100% and by 22 to 89%, respectively. At La Jaillière, a rainfall simulator was used in 1995 to verify that buffer strips are still effective in conditions of intense runoff. Investigation of the influence of sowing direction during the 1994–95 cropping period at Bignan showed that sowing perpendicular to the slope seemed to be beneficial in reducing pesticide content in runoff. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献

Introduction

Idiopathic systemic vasculitis represents a group of clinical entities having non-specific etiology with the common characteristic of acute or chronic inflammatory compromise of the small and large vessels walls, associated with fibrinoid necrosis.

Objectives

To describe the most common inflammatory vascular diseases in a long historical cohort of patients from San Juan de Dios Hospital located in Bogota, Colombia using two different systems and a clinical histopathological correlation format, and to make a comparison between them.

Methods

We reviewed all previously ascertained cases of vasculitis confirmed by biopsy processed between 1953 and 1990, and systematically collected data on all new cases of vasculitis from 1991 to 1997 at the Hospital San Juan de Dios (Bogota – Colombia). The cases were classified in accordance with the Chapel Hill Consensus criteria, and the system proposed by J.T. Lie.

Results

Of 165,556 biopsy tissue specimens obtained during this period from our hospital, 0.18% had vasculitis, perivasculitis or vasculopathy. These included 304 histopathological biopsies from 292 patients. Cutaneous leukocytoclastic vasculitis (64 histological specimens) was the most frequently encountered type of "primary" vasculitis followed by thromboangiitis obliterans (38 specimens), and polyarteritis nodosa (24 specimens). Vasculitis associated with connective tissue diseases (33 specimens) and infection (20 specimens) were the main forms of secondary vasculitis, a category that was omitted from the Chapel Hill consensus report. We found that 65.8% of our histopathological diagnoses could not be classified according to the Chapel Hill classification, and 35.2% could not be classified according to the classification of Lie. Only 8.9% of cases remained unclassified by our system after clinical and histological correlation.

Conclusion

Current vasculitis classification schemes are designed for classification, rather that diagnosis of disease and do not adequately address some common forms of inflammatory vascular diseases, including those of infectious etiology and unusual etiology seen in clinical practice. Based on our clinical experience, we suggest a classification outline which practitioners can use which emphasizes correlation of the clinical picture to the histopathology findings for diagnosis and therapy, which may promote better clinical practice and standardization for clinical trials.

The aim of the present work was to study salt effect on the yield and composition of shoot essential oil (EO) and the structures responsible for its biosynthesis in Mentha pulegium L. Shoot EO was extracted by hydrodistillation and composition was determined by GC–MS method. Apical and basal leaves were taken for microscopy analyses; small fresh samples were observed directly without fixation or metallisation with environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and stereomicroscope (SM). Fresh separate epidermis was used for light microscopy (LM). Salt stress enhanced EO yield by about 2.75 times and affected the percentage of menthone, which is the major compound (51%), increasing that of pulegone. Menthone, pulegone, and neomenthol constituting the monoterpene class were found to be the principal components. The anatomical study showed three types of trichomes: (i) non-glandular, multicellular, simple hairs; (ii) small, capitate glandular trichomes; (iii) and peltate glandular trichomes. In control plants, the density and size of trichomes varied with leaf side (abaxial or adaxial) and developmental stage. Salt stress results in significant modifications affecting trichome distribution and size on both sides.  相似文献

This study aims at evaluating the Patagonian seahorse, Hippocampus patagonicus, feeding behavior in captivity with regard to type and size of prey selectivity and time‐investment‐related activities for searching and capture. Experiments in aquaria were carried out under two different treatments, with and without refuge for prey. Different diets composed of amphipods (Melita palmata and Ampithoe valida), juvenile decapods (Neohelice granulata) from natural environments, and artificially cultured Artemia salina. The eaten prey’s size was analyzed and experiments with size‐controlled prey were carried out. There were neither significant differences in the prey quantity ingested between males and females nor between treatments (with or without refuge). However, significant differences were found between the quantities of each prey consumed. Amphipods and A. salina were consumed in greater quantity (P < 0.05) when compared with juvenile decapods. Experiments with A. salina of different sizes did not show significant differences on seahorses’ preference. N. granulata was highly avoided and seahorses had lower capture efficiency over this prey. Behavioral observations showed that more than 50% of the times seahorses were resting and ambushing their prey. In captivity, with optimal conditions for predation, the Patagonian seahorse modifies its opportunistic behavior, feeding selectively, and bases its food preferences on prey size and shape .  相似文献
