The effect of increased ozone concentrations in the air on selected aspects of rat reproduction

Five-month-old male rates were exposed to 0.5 ppm ozone for 50 days, 5 hours a day. A week before the completion of ozone exposure, a biological test was performed to determine the fertilization rate and the survival rate of newborns in both ozone-exposed and control animals. After 50 days, the rats were sacrificed with an overdose of halotane, and testes were collected to assess the morphology and motility of spermatozoa. Neither the morphology of spermatozoa nor motility parameters determined by the CASA (computer-assisted sperm analysis) system showed statistically significant differences between ozone-exposed and control males. The number of successful matings and the survival rate of newborns per litter within one year postpartum were also similar in both groups. However, sperm concentration was by 17% lower in ozone-exposed rats, compared with the control animals.     

Feline glaucomas

Cats are usually presented at a very late stage in the course of glaucoma when the eye is already blind. Secondary glaucoma because of another underlying ocular lesion is the most common form of glaucoma in the cat and is frequently associated with chronic anterior uveitis or intraocular neoplasia. Chronic stages of glaucoma in the cat are characterized by buphthalmus, anterior lens luxation, and exposure keratitis secondary to the enlarged globe. Ophthalmoscopic signs of glaucomatous retinal degeneration are only noticed in very advanced stages. Treatment of glaucoma in cats is usually aimed to keep the eye comfortable and within a normal intraocular pressure range. However, many antiglaucoma medications that are successfully used in humans and dogs are not very well tolerated by cats and, therefore, the selection of recommended drugs is limited in this species.     

Prospects for a novel vaccine against tuberculosis

The development of a new and improved vaccine against tuberculosis has in the last 10 years been accelerated tremendously from the completed Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome and the progress in molecular biology. This has resulted in the identification of a large number of antigens with potential in tuberculosis vaccines. The next phase of this work has now started--putting the most relevant molecules back together as fusion molecules and cocktails. This requires carefully monitoring of aspects as immunodominance, recognition in different populations as well as the influence of different adjuvants and delivery systems. The most advanced of these vaccines such as the fusion between ESAT6 and Ag85B have been evaluated in a range of animal models including non-human primates and are now entering into clinical trials. For these vaccines to be successfully implemented in future vaccination programmes it is necessary to understand the immunological background for the failure of BCG and optimize the vaccines for their ability to boost the immuno-response primed by BCG.

Temporary exposure of prepubertal,somatically-mature broiler breeder females to stimulatory photoperiods

1.?Individually-caged Ross 308 broiler breeders were transferred temporarily at 147 d from 8 to 14-h photoperiods and back to 8 h at 5-d intervals from 5 to 25 d and at 32 d. Control birds were maintained on 8 h or transferred permanently to 14 h.

2.?Five long days had minimal effect on age at first egg, between 10 and 25 long days progressively accelerated sexual development, and maximum advance was achieved by 32 long days. However, a model involving the ogive of a normal distribution with a mean of 14 long days and an SD of 5.3 indicated that 28 long days would be sufficient to maximise sexual development.

3.?The similarity of this model for broiler breeders with one previously produced for egg-type pullets suggested a common physiological mechanism for photosexual responses to two opposing changes in photoperiod.
