Osteomyelitis of the mandible with Actinomyces species was diagnosed in a 4-year-old sports horse with radiographic changes suggestive of neoplasia. Surgical debridement, intravenous and local iodine solution treatment were administered. Mandibular Actinomyces infections are reported in humans and ruminants; they have not been previously reported in the horse.  相似文献

Reconciling food security, economic development and biodiversity conservation is a key challenge, especially in the face of the demographic transition characterizing many countries in the world. Fisheries and marine ecosystems constitute a difficult application of this bio‐economic challenge. Many experts and scientists advocate an ecosystem approach to manage marine socio‐ecosystems for their sustainability and resilience. However, the ways by which to operationalize ecosystem‐based fisheries management (EBFM) remain poorly specified. We propose a specific methodological framework—viability modelling—to do so. We show how viability modelling can be applied using four contrasted case‐studies: two small‐scale fisheries in South America and Pacific and two larger‐scale fisheries in Europe and Australia. The four fisheries are analysed using the same modelling framework, structured around a set of common methods, indicators and scenarios. The calibrated models are dynamic, multispecies and multifleet and account for various sources of uncertainty. A multicriteria evaluation is used to assess the scenarios’ outcomes over a long time horizon with different constraints based on ecological, social and economic reference points. Results show to what extent the bio‐economic and ecosystem risks associated with the adoption of status quo strategies are relatively high and challenge the implementation of EBFM. In contrast, strategies called ecoviability or co‐viability strategies, that aim at satisfying the viability constraints, reduce significantly these ecological and economic risks and promote EBFM. The gains associated with those ecoviability strategies, however, decrease with the intensity of regulations imposed on these fisheries.  相似文献

The effects of pesticides on beneficial predatory arthropods have been widely studied; this paper however deals with their effects on Heteroptera, an important beneficial insect group and food source for farmland birds. Field trials were used to evaluate pesticide effects under realistic conditions of application on a commercial arable farm and compared with previously published laboratory findings. Fungicides were found to produce very low levels of mortality, not significantly different from control treatments. Aphicides varied in their impact, producing non-significant to highly significant mortality levels. The likely ecological impact of pesticides on various heteropteran groups found within the field and field boundary is discussed. © 1997 SCI.  相似文献

Aquaculture is a rapidly growing field of food production. However, morbidity and mortality are higher in aquaculture species than in domestic animals. Bacterial diseases are a leading cause of farmed fish morbidity and are often treated with antimicrobials. Since most Swiss fish farms release effluents directly into surface water without treatment and since aquaculture fish are consumed by humans, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multi-resistance in aquaculture fish are important for environmental and public health. In this study, AMR tests for 14 antimicrobials were performed on 1,448 isolates from 1,134 diagnostic laboratory submissions from farmed and ornamental fish submissions for the period from 2000 to 2017. Amoxicillin, gentamycin and norfloxacin had the lowest proportion of resistant samples. However, AMR was highly variable over time. Resistance proportions were higher in: (a) ornamental fish compared with farmed fish, (b) fish from recirculation systems compared with those from other farming systems and (c) isolates originating from skin compared with those originating from inner organs. Multiple resistances were common. The results of this study provide useful data for Swiss fish veterinarians and some interesting hypotheses about risk factors for AMR in aquaculture and pet fish in Switzerland. Estimating symbiotic di‐nitrogen (N2) fixation is challenging, especially when working with woody N2 fixers in field trials. Fortunately, isotope methods based on 15N natural abundance or on 15N artificial enrichment (dilution method) make it possible to estimate the proportion of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) in N2‐fixing species. These methods have been extensively used in the field for herbaceous species, much less for tree species such as alder and acacia, and rarely for black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). The objectives of this study were to characterize the fixation potential of black locust in a plantation by using the two 15N isotope methods in the field, and to document values of isotope fractionation occurring during N2 fixation (the B value). B values were estimated both by growing trees on an N‐free medium in controlled conditions (Blab) and by making Ndfa calculated with the natural abundance method converge with Ndfa calculated with the 15N dilution method in the field (Bfield). The two methods gave consistent estimates of the B value. B values ranging between –1.4 and –3.2‰ were found, varying with the age of the plant material. Up to 76% of the N in the black locust trees came from the atmosphere, representing more than 45 kg N ha?1 over five years and confirming that black locust may be well adapted to N‐poor soils.  相似文献

Pyrethrum seed has an important role in the transmission of Stagonosporopsis tanaceti, the cause of ray blight disease of pyrethrum. A TaqMan probe based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed to quantify the level of S. tanaceti inocula in pyrethrum seed and seedlings. Primer pair (St_qF3, St_qR2) was designed based on the intergenic spacer (IGS) region of S. tanaceti, which produced a 125 bp amplicon specific to S. tanaceti. TaqMan PCR assay using St_qF3, St_qR2 and a probe St_qP was highly specific against the genomic DNA of S. tanaceti, but did not amplify DNA of 14 related Stagonosporopsis species or other foliar pathogens of pyrethrum. The sensitivity limit of this assay was measured using the cycle threshold (Ct) value which ranged from 17.59 for 10 nanograms (ng) to 36.34 for 100 femtograms (fg) genomic DNA of S. tanaceti. There was a significant negative correlation (r = ?0.999, P < 0.001) between the Ct value and the percent of S. tanaceti infected seed. In addition, this TaqMan PCR assay detected latent infection within seedlings. This assay could be applied to test commercial seed and seedlings before deciding on the appropriate management practices.  相似文献

Herein we investigate the structure/function relationships of fucoidans from Ascophyllum nodosum to analyze their pro-angiogenic effect and cellular uptake in native and glycosaminoglycan-free (GAG-free) human endothelial cells (HUVECs). Fucoidans are marine sulfated polysaccharides, which act as glycosaminoglycans mimetics. We hypothesized that the size and sulfation rate of fucoidans influence their ability to induce pro-angiogenic processes independently of GAGs. We collected two fractions of fucoidans, Low and Medium Molecular Weight Fucoidan (LMWF and MMWF, respectively) by size exclusion chromatography and characterized their composition (sulfate, fucose and uronic acid) by colorimetric measurement and Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy. The high affinities of fractionated fucoidans to heparin binding proteins were confirmed by Surface Plasmon Resonance. We evidenced that LMWF has a higher pro-angiogenic (2D-angiogenesis on Matrigel) and pro-migratory (Boyden chamber) potential on HUVECs, compared to MMWF. Interestingly, in a GAG-free HUVECs model, LMWF kept a pro-angiogenic potential. Finally, to evaluate the association of LMWF-induced biological effects and its cellular uptake, we analyzed by confocal microscopy the GAGs involvement in the internalization of a fluorescent LMWF. The fluorescent LMWF was mainly internalized through HUVEC clathrin-dependent endocytosis in which GAGs were partially involved. In conclusion, a better characterization of the relationships between the fucoidan structure and its pro-angiogenic potential in GAG-free endothelial cells was required to identify an adapted fucoidan to enhance vascular repair in ischemia.  相似文献

In order to increase production of bivalves in hatcheries and nurseries, the development of new technology and its integration into commercial bivalve hatcheries is important. Recirculation aquaculture systems (RASs) have several advantages: high densities of the species can be cultured resulting in a cost-effective production system; optimal temperature maximizes production and allows rapid turnover of the product; stable water quality improves growth rate and minimizes stress and potential loss by diseases. Pilot RAS systems were developed for seed rearing of oysters (Crassostrea gigas), scallops (Pecten maximus), mussels (Mytilus edulis) and clams (Ruditapes decussatus). Optimal feed addition and waste matrix were determined. Based on this, system flow rates were designed. Seed growth in the pilot RAS systems was compared at different renewal rates and with growth in flow-through systems (FTS). All four species can be reared in RAS and showed similar growth in RAS and in FTS or in RAS with a higher renewal rate. RAS can keep O2, nitrogen and pH within the desired range. Temperature was generally higher in RAS than in FTS, probably due to heat induced by the pump circulating the water. The supply of sufficient amount of food in combination with a desire to reduce the renewal rate calls for use of concentrated feed in RAS.  相似文献
