Disposal and management of abattoir wastewater have been a long-term concern in a high meat-consuming country like Australia. Land-based application of wastewater is considered to be the most economically viable disposal method and is widely used by abattoirs. In this study, we assessed the effects of long-term abattoir wastewater irrigation on soil physical and chemical characteristics of calcareous soils. Soil samples were collected from 16 different locations with seven 5 cm depths intervals down to 35 cm. Soil properties including soil type, bulk density, moisture holding capacity, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), carbon (C) and micronutrients were measured. Soil characteristics were compared with non-irrigated soils. The study area receives annually about 327 ML of wastewater with high concentration of N and P (186 and 30.4 mg/L). Overall, the site retained 0.6 t N/ha, 0.1 t P/ha and 0.4 t of K per hectare. Irrigation for over a decade onto the study site has caused a significant change in the soil fertility. Soil total N was increased by 82% compared to non-irrigated. Similarly, soil total P concentration was increased more than sixfold. The overall results showed that the abattoir wastewater irrigation to soil caused very significant changes in soil nutrient levels. These changes indicate need to recapture the surplus nutrient, in particular N, to avoid potential leaching and off-site effects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Transmission of Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is dependent on virus uptake in the midgut prior to virus movement to the salivary glands. Replication of TSWV in the alimentary canal of tobacco thrips (TT, Frankliniella fusca) and western flower thrips (WFT, F. occidentalis) was investigated by immunolocalization of the nonstructural protein (NSs) encoded by the small RNA of TSWV and fluorescence microscopy. Analysis of cohorts during development from larva to adults following virus acquisition by first instar larva indicated that virus replication followed a specific time-course pattern in the foregut, regions of the midgut, salivary glands, and ligaments between the midgut and salivary glands. Initial virus replication occurred only in epithelial cells of midgut-1 but, upon infection of muscle cells, the virus moved to the midgut-2, foregut, midgut-3, and salivary glands. The ligaments between the midgut and salivary glands appeared to be a route for virus to invade the salivary glands. No virus replication was observed in the hindgut, Malpighian tubules, or tubular salivary glands. The dynamics of TSWV replication, as measured by NSs accumulation, were similar in both TT and WFT.  相似文献

Antimicrobial stewardship involves the judicious use of antimicrobials balanced against the requirement to treat the presenting clinical condition. The same mandate and principles as discussed in human medicine and other veterinary disciplines are relevant to equine practice. This brief review will focus on available resources for equine practitioners, emerging perspectives on antimicrobial use and stewardship, and opportunities for more effective antimicrobial use in equine practice. There is a need for improved client education, availability of faster and more accurate techniques for identification and sensitivity testing of bacterial pathogens, and the development of novel agents.  相似文献

The effects of ground corn particle size on ethanol yield and soluble solids in thin stillage was evaluated using a 2‐L laboratory dry‐grind procedure. The procedure was optimized for grinding, liquefaction, sacchari‐fication, and fermentation parameters. The optimized procedure was reproducible with a coefficient of variation of 3.6% in ethanol yield. Five particle size distributions of ground corn were obtained using a cross‐beater mill equipped with five screens (0.5, 2, 3, 4, and 5 mm). Particle size had an effect on ethanol yield and on soluble solids concentration in thin stillage. The highest ethanol yield of 12.6 mL/100 mL of beer was achieved using a 0.5‐mm screen in the cross‐beater mill. Treatment using the 0.5‐mm mill screen resulted in soluble solids concentration of 25.1 g/L and was higher than soluble solids concentrations obtained with other screens. No differences in soluble solid concentrations were observed in samples of thin stillage obtained from 2, 3, 4, and 5‐mm screens which had a mean yield of 16.2 g/L. By optimizing particle size for maximum ethanol yield and minimum solids in thin stillage, dry‐grind corn plants could realize reduced capital and operating costs.  相似文献

A range of low-molecular-weight organic acids were identified in rhizosphere soil, leaf litter, and poultry manure compost. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments were carried out to examine the effects of seven low-molecular-weight organic acids on phosphate adsorption by soils, and the solubilization and plant uptake of P from soil pre-incubated with monocalcium phosphate and North Carolina phosphate rock. Acetic, formic, lactic (monocarboxylic), malic, tartaric, oxalic (dicarboxylic), and citric (tricarboxylic) acids were used in the study. The addition of organic acids decreased the adsorption of P by soils in the order tricarboxylic acid>dicarboxylic acid>monocarboxylic acid. The decreases in P adsorption with organic acid addition increased with an increase in the stability constant of the organic acid for Al (logK Al). Organic acids extracted greater amounts of P from soils meubated with both monocalcium phosphate and phosphate rock than water did. Although more phosphate was extracted by the organic acids from monocalcium phosphate — than from phosphate rock — treated soils in absolute terms, when the results were expressed as a percentage of dissolved phosphate there was little difference between the two fertilizers. The amount of P extracted by the organic acids from both fertilizers increased with an increase in logK Al values. The addition of oxalic and citric acids increased the dry matter yield of ryegrass and the uptake of P in soils treated with both fertilizers. The agronomic effectiveness of both fertilizers increased in the presence of organic acids and the increase was greater with the phosphate rock than with the monocalcium phosphate. The results indicated that organic acids increase the availability of P in soils mainly through both decreased adsorption of P and increased solubilization of P compounds.  相似文献
