The damage caused by Thrips tabaci to a susceptible hybrid of early white cabbage was studied in field experiments undertaken during 2004 and 2005. The three treatments tested were beds of cabbage mulched with: (1) barley straw, (2) hay, and (3) black polyethylene (PE) sheeting. Bare-soil (un-mulched) beds were used as the control treatment. One early and one late experiment were performed in both years. In the early experiments, the mulches were applied at the start of the experiment, whereas in the late experiments the soil was first covered with black polyethylene for approximately 1 month. In both years, the springs were cold and wet, and so the thrips appeared late and their numbers were low. The highest mean actual weight and trimmed weight were recorded for cabbage grown in 2005 under PE mulch (actual early: 995 g, actual late: 1184 g, trimmed early: 870 g, trimmed late: 1056 g). Year 2004 gave lower values (110g for both variables) under barley straw and hay mulch (165 g and 160 g, respectively). There was no evidence of an allelopathic effect of water extracts of either barley straw or hay.  相似文献

Serum amyloid A proteins (SAA) are very sensitive acute phase proteins, displaying multiple isoforms in plasma and different body fluids. They are currently under investigation as biomarkers of diseases. The aim of the present study was to compare the concentration and isoform expression of SAA in serum and milk of cows with bacteriologically negative milk (control group) and naturally occurring Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) subclinical mastitis (subclinical mastitis group). Somatic cell count (SCC) and bacteriological analyses were performed to establish the control and subclinical mastitis group. SAA concentration was evaluated using a commercial ELISA kit, while expression of different isoforms (serum A-SAA and milk M-SAA3 isoforms) was visualized by denaturing isoelectrical focusing and immunoblotting. The SAA concentrations in sera and milk of cows in the subclinical mastitis group were three and 100 times higher than in those from the control group of cows, respectively. Cows in the subclinical mastitis group had more acidic SAA isoforms in serum with the most prominent one at pI 5.5. This isoform was not detected in sera from the control group. Milk samples in the subclinical mastitis group contained abundant highly alkaline M-SAA3 isoforms and most of the serum isoforms, except for that at pI 5.5. In the subclinical mastitis group SAA isoforms with equivalent pI as serum isoforms accounted for 20% of the total SAA concentration in milk. There were significant differences in the concentrations and isoform patterns of SAA in serum and milk between the control and subclinical mastitis groups of cows. Also, we demonstrated that serum SAA isoforms were not transferred to milk proportion to their plasma content.  相似文献

Monilinia fructicola, the most destructive pathogen of the genus Monilinia, has recently been introduced into Serbia and many other European countries. Since then, many studies have been conducted to evaluate the characteristics of Monilinia species that have a role in the establishment and survival of the pathogen in new areas. The present study assessed the capacity of M. fructicola to repress and replace Monilinia laxa in Serbia based on: fungicide sensitivity, growth rate and aggressiveness at different temperatures, as well as frost hardiness of the isolates of both species. The results showed that the isolates of M. fructicola, compared to M. laxa, were significantly less sensitive to the following fungicides: iprodione, tebucanozole, chlorothalonil, azoxystrobin, fluopyram, and boscalid. In addition, M. laxa isolates exhibited little variation in sensitivity to all of the tested fungicides, whereas M. fructicola isolates displayed a wide range of sensitivity. The temperature of 5°C favored M. laxa growth and aggressiveness, while at 30°C M. fructicola grew faster and had higher lesion expansion rate. These results support an assumption that M. fructicola will continue to spread in Serbian orchards in coming years, particularly on stone fruits harvested during hot summer weather.  相似文献

A high viability of probiotics in food product, with a living cells threshold of 107/cfu/g (colony‐forming units/g) is a challenge to achieve in food production. Spray drying is an efficient and economic industrial method for probiotic bacterial preservation and its application in food products. In this study, the survival of free and spray‐dried cells of potential probiotic strain Lactobacillus plantarum 564 after production and during 8 weeks of storage of soft acid coagulated goat cheese was investigated, as well as compositional and sensory quality of cheese. Total bacterial count of spray‐dried Lb. plantarum 564 cells were maintained at the high level of 8.82 log/cfu/g in cheese after 8 weeks of storage, while free‐cell number decreased to 6.9 log/cfu/g. However, the chemical composition, pH values and sensory evaluation between control cheese (C1 sample made with commercial starter culture) and treated cheese samples (C2 and C3, made with the same starter, with the addition of free and spray‐dried Lb. plantarum 564 cells, respectively) did not significantly differ. High viability of potential probiotic bacteria and acceptable sensory properties indicate that spray‐dried Lb. plantarum 564 strain could be successfully used in the production of soft acid coagulated goat cheeses.  相似文献

A wide range of ‘Obla?inska’ sour cherry germplasm was collected from the most important growing regions in Serbia. Twenty nine variables were recorded in 41 accessions to determine the overall degree of polymorphism and to detect similarities among genotypes. The highest degree of variability was observed in traits related to number and composition of fruiting twigs, fruit set and yield. The majority of significant correlation coefficients were found in the characteristics representing fruit and leaf size. Principal component analysis (PCA) makes the phenotypical diversity determination and separation of similar genotypes possible. Variables with high discriminating values were those related to fruit and leaf size, yield efficiency, blooming time and flowering density. Based on the results from this study, the genotypes XI/3 and II/10 can be recommended for cultivation. The clonal selection and conservation of the highly diverse autochthonous population of sour cherry are also recommended.  相似文献

Fishery in the Danube River basin has been characterised over the past century by increasing fishing levels, illegal fishing practices and poor regulations. However, there is a remarkable lack of available information on the actual status of fish stocks, as well as on the trends and sustainability of fisheries, which poses a problem for the development of adequate policy and management measures. In this study, we assessed the trends in the commercial fishery in the Middle Danube in Serbia during 1969–1989 and 2006–2010 by evaluating the temporal changes in life history‐related indicators that might point out unsustainable fishing pressures. Moreover, we present the approach of using the catch‐weighted mean egg‐per‐recruit (EPR) index as a proxy for the overall resilience of fish stocks to fishing. Results indicated a marked shift towards smaller fish that mature earlier and have a shorter lifespan. Landings also shifted towards species at lower trophic levels, with a mean trophic level decline at a rate of approximately 0.16 per decade. Results indicated likely presence of the ‘fishing through the food web’ phenomenon. At the same time, catch‐weighted community mean of the 20% EPR threshold ratio (EPR20%) increased by 4.2%, indicating the increase of the overall resilience to fishing of the exploited species. Obtained results indicated the importance of using such metrics for the assessments of trends in fishery. The approach and results presented here could be of interest for the scientific community and stakeholders involved in fishery management.  相似文献

The behavior of metals in sediments after their disposal to land has important implications for the environmental management. The sediment from the Carska Bara (Serbia) was polluted with adequate metal salts in order to reach severe contamination based on the pseudo-total metal content of Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn, Cu, and Cr according to the corresponding Dutch standards and Canadian guidelines. The toxicity and fate of the metal in sediment depend on its chemical form, and therefore, quantification of the different forms of a metal is more meaningful than the estimation of its total concentration. In this study, fractionation of metals in sediment has been investigated to determine its speciation and ecotoxic potential, as well as evaluation of metal potential toxicity based on the simultaneously extracted metals (SEMs) and acid volatile sulfides (AVSs) analysis at the beginning of the experiment and after 5?weeks of sediment aging. The investigations suggest that Cd, Pb, and Zn have a tendency to associate with labile fraction, the most mobile and most dangerous fraction for the environment. Risk assessment code revealed their high risk. Copper and chromium showed low to medium risk to the aquatic environment. Nickel showed no risk to the aquatic environment. This was the case at the beginning and after 5?weeks of aging. Aging yielded an increased mobility of all metals based on the increased proportion in mobile fractions. The ??[SEM i ]/[AVS] ratio was found to be >1 both at the beginning and after 5?weeks of aging, with the ratio showing an increase with time. This ratio indicates the potential availability/toxicity and, according to the US EPA criteria, the samples belong to the group with probable negative effect. If particular metals are considered, only the ??[SEM i ]/[AVS] ratio for zinc was >1 at the beginning. After 5?weeks, the ratio was >1 for zinc, lead, and copper. Comparison of the results of sequential extraction and the results of SEM and AVS analysis showed good agreement for lead and zinc.  相似文献

Diplodia sapinea is an important pathogen of pine trees in plantations and urban areas in many parts of the world. This pathogen has recently also been isolated from diseased Cedrus atlantica, C. deodara and Picea omorika planted as ornamentals across the Western Balkans. The aim of this study was to consider the host range of D. sapinea in Serbia and Montenegro. Diplodia sapinea was identified from a broader collection of Botryosphaeriaceae from the Western Balkans region, based on the DNA sequence data for the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and the translation elongation factor 1α (TEF 1‐ α). The D. sapinea isolates were obtained from sixteen tree species in the genera Abies, Cedrus, Chamaecyparis, Juniperus, Picea, Pinus, Pseudotsuga and Fagus. Four species represented new hosts in the Balkans, and this is the first report of D. sapinea from F. sylvatica anywhere in the world. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on the tree hosts from which D. sapinea was isolated, as well as on P. abies, Thuja occidentalis, Prunus laurocerasus, Eucalyptus grandis and P. patula. Inoculations were made on seedlings in the field, in the greenhouse or on freshly detached branches. Inoculations on P. pungens, P. omorika, P. abies, P. menziesii, A. concolor, P. nigra and P. sylvestris resulted in death of the seedlings 5–16 weeks after inoculation. Diplodia sapinea produced lesions on J. horizontalis and P. patula seedlings and F. sylvatica cut branches. Reciprocal inoculations showed that D. sapinea is not a pine‐specific pathogen, causing disease on tree species, including those from which it had not been isolated. Not surprisingly, the pathogen was most aggressive on some species of Pinaceae.  相似文献

Both calcium (Ca2+) and silicon (Si) improve plant performance under salt (NaCl) stress. Although these two mineral elements share numerous similarities, the information on how their extracellular interactions in the root apoplast affect uptake of sodium (Na+) is still lacking. Here, we investigated the effect of high Si supply in the bioavailable form of monosilicic acid (H4SiO4) on the activity of Ca2+ in the external root solution, and subsequent root uptake and compartmentation of Na in maize (Zea mays L.). In the short‐term experiments (6 h), 14‐d‐old maize plants were exposed to various concentrations of Ca2+ at three different pH‐values (6.5, 7.5, and 8.5) and two Si concentrations, i.e., low (1 mM) and high (4 mM) supply of H4SiO4. The activity of Ca2+ and Na+ in the external solution as well as the root concentrations of total and cell sap and BaCl2‐exchangeble apoplastic fractions of both elements were analyzed. The pH of the nutrient solution affected neither the ion activities nor the root accumulation of both Ca2+ and Na+. At higher pH values (7.5 and 8.5) the interactions of Ca2+ and Si at high Si supply led to a decrease of Ca2+ activity and, hence, an increase of Na+ : Ca2+ activity ratio in the external root solution. Concomitantly, despite the elevated exchangeable apoplastic fraction of both Ca2+ and Na+, the total and cell sap concentrations were remarkably decreased for Ca2+ and increased for Na+ by the addition of 4 mM H4SiO4. This work demonstrates that at high Si supply extracellular Ca‐Si interactions leading to lowered activity of Ca2+ might rapidly compromise the ameliorative effect of Ca2+ on Na+ accumulation in roots. Practically, Si over‐fertilization of saline and, in particular, sodic soils may further promote the accumulation of Na+ in root tissues hours after Si application and, hence, increase a potential risk of Na+ toxicity.  相似文献
