The utility, vehicle required, the time needed for assembly and relocation and the costs associated with six different rainfall simulators were studied. The results can be summarized as follows:
- 1 The simulator designed by Kainz & Eicher (1990) is the least expensive to operate. This simulator also has excellent experimental versatility. Its only restriction is a short slope length.
- 2 The rainfall simulator of Karl & Toldrian (1973) is also inexpensive to operate, but because of disadvantages such as low falling height, wind susceptibility, and the need for more workers than other simulators, it should be used mainly where other simulators are not practical (forests, steep slopes, or long slopes).
- 3 The rainfall simulator of Richter et al. (1988) has limited mobility in the field and is highly susceptible to wind drift. Moreover, its narrow plots do not cover a representative unit of a cultivated field.
- 4 The modified Swanson-type simulator (Auerswald, (1986) is suitable for large plots if a sufficient water supply is available.
- 5 The simulator of Kromer & Vöhringer (1988) has the highest fixed costs, but labour is used efficiently.
- 6 The simulator of Schmidt (1983) can only be considered for stationary use because of its long assembly time. Other disadvantages are narrow plot size and high wind susceptibility.

Abstract. Increasing the ploughing depth and ploughing in grassland has been common in Germany during the past 20 years. Incubation studies were conducted with topsoils from luvisols and gleysols at different times after change of management in order to assess its influence on nitrogen mineralization and its kinetic parameters.
The results show that deep ploughing slows the mineralization of nitrogen. The difference between earlier (1967–72) and more recently (1980–82) deepened topsoil has become smaller after a further three years of cultivation, however. The preceding crops (wheat or sugar beet), the amount of N fertilizer as well as clay and nitrogen contents cause a variation in N mineralization. The results indicate a continuing approach of an'equilibrium'organic matter and nitrogen content. The enrichment capacity of intensively managed soils may be replenished within 10 years.
Gleysols formerly under grass mineralize more nitrogen than'traditionally'ploughed soils, even 27 years after the ploughing-in. While nitrogen from easily decomposable materials decreases within the first 10 years, the resistant fraction is a long-lasting determinant for N mineralization. Both processes need to be considered when applying fertilizer to minimize nitrate leaching. 相似文献

Sugar beet growth is often impaired by cold and compacted soil. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of soil temperature and soil compaction on the growth and function of sugar beet roots. For this purpose a pot experiment with sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) was conducted in a growth chamber in which the soil temperature was kept constant either at 10°C or 20°C and air temperature at 20°C. The soil was uncompacted (1.30 g cm?3) or compacted to a bulk density of 1.65 g cm?3. In order to find out whether growth restriction was caused by insufficient P supply of the plant the experiment was run without and with P application (300 mg per kg soil). Root growth was much smaller at 10°C compared to 20°C, whereas root/shoot ratio was not affected by soil temperature. Hence, root and shoot growth was inhibited to the same extent. P content of the plants was not reduced, neither by cold nor by compacted soil, although parameters of acquisition such as root length and morphological root properties were altered. Soil temperature strongly affected P influx, whereas compaction did not. The calculation with a simulation model showed that at 10°C soil temperature the predicted P uptake of the plants agreed with the measured P uptake irrespective of compaction and P application. However, at 20°C the model underestimated the P influx at low soil P availability even if allowance was made for root hairs. It is concluded that under conditions of high shoot P demand and low P availability in soil P has been mobilized by mechanisms not taken into account by the model. 相似文献

The effects of protein oxidation, for example of methionine residues, are linked to many diseases, including those of protein misfolding, such as Alzheimer's disease. Protein misfolding diseases are characterized by the accumulation of insoluble proteinaceous aggregates comprised mainly of amyloid fibrils. Amyloid-containing bodies known as corpora amylacea (CA) are also found in mammary secretory tissue, where their presence slows milk flow. The major milk protein κ-casein readily forms amyloid fibrils under physiological conditions. Milk exists in an extracellular oxidizing environment. Accordingly, the two methionine residues in κ-casein (Met(95) and Met(106)) were selectively oxidized and the effects on the fibril-forming propensity, cellular toxicity, chaperone ability, and structure of κ-casein were determined. Oxidation resulted in an increase in the rate of fibril formation and a greater level of cellular toxicity. β-Casein, which inhibits κ-casein fibril formation in vitro, was less effective at suppressing fibril formation of oxidized κ-casein. The ability of κ-casein to prevent the amorphous aggregation of target proteins was slightly enhanced upon methionine oxidation, which may arise from the protein's greater exposed surface hydrophobicity. No significant changes to κ-casein's intrinsically disordered structure occurred upon oxidation. The enhanced rate of fibril formation of oxidized κ-casein, coupled with the reduced chaperone ability of β-casein to prevent this aggregation, may affect casein-casein interaction within the casein micelle and thereby promote κ-casein aggregation and contribute to the formation of CA. 相似文献

Runoff events were analysed in separated sewer systems in the town of Luxembourg. The relationships between Event Mean Concentrations of different pollutants and runoff patterns were evaluated. In addition, the inter-storm and intra-storm variability of the material transport were determined. Primarily, the variations in pollutant concentrations and loads are determined by the antecedent weather conditions. The presence of illicit sanitary inputs in one of the sewers produced a significant first flush effect as well as higher Event Mean Concentrations for pollutants. Furthermore, near the town of Trier 40 storms were analyzed in a small natural basin mainly influenced by runoff from a separated sewer system. Natural and artificial storm events were investigated in order to estimate the relationship between the pollutant sources in the channel and from the separated sewer system. Just like in the canalization of Luxembourg City the pollutant dynamics during natural storms are strongly influenced by pre-event hydrological conditions. The artificial storms behave differently. Despite little pre-rain, the maximum concentrations of toxic substances are comparatively low. Holocene floodplain sedimentation in the Rhine catchment is controlled by human and climate impacts. Intricate river behaviour modifies the fluvial response to the external impacts making cause–effect analysis difficult, especially on large spatial scales. To better understand the relative importance and interdependencies of external and internal controls, temporally resolved floodplain sedimentation rates are established using three different methods: i) floodplain storage studies on the trunk stream, ii) depth/age-analysis of overbank deposits from different parts of the catchment and iii) cumulative frequency distributions of 14C-ages from floodplain deposits from various parts of the catchment. The applied methodology strongly differs with the available temporal resolution and the size of the corresponding catchment. All three methods show a strong increase in sedimentation rate for more recent periods that can be linked to increasing human impact. Evidences for climate impacts and intricate river behaviour are less clear and hindered by insufficient temporal resolution of the currently available data. 相似文献
