The effects of selenium supplementation on mastitis parameters in milk and on glutathione peroxidase (GPx) levels in blood were evaluated. Fifty-five Estonian dairy cows were allocated to selenium-supplemented (n=39) and nonsupplemented (n=16) groups. The supplemented group received 0.2 ppm organic selenium in the form of selenium yeast in their diet daily for 8 weeks. The nonsupplemented cows received their standard diet with no selenium supplementation. Mastitis parameters (i.e., bacteriologic findings and somatic cell count, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, and bovine serum albumin concentration) and GPx levels were monitored. The increase in the activity of GPx was significantly (P<.001) greater in selenium-supplemented cows than in nonsupplemented ones. Milk samples from each quarter were examined before and 8 weeks after initiation of the study. The proportion of quarters still pathogen-free after 8 weeks was significantly (P<.01; odds ratio [OR]=9.7) higher in selenium-supplemented cows than in nonsupplemented cows. However, when quarters milk-tested as pathogen-infected at the start of the study were reexamined after 8 weeks, there was no significant (P=.14; OR 3.6) difference in the proportion of pathogen-free quarters between selenium-supplemented cows and nonsupplemented cows. Differential positive rate (Youden's index) revealed that individual quarters were more prone to be infected by pathogens when the blood GPx activities in cows were below the cutoff value of 3.3 microkat/g hemoglobin than when GPx activity was above this value. It was concluded that selenium supplementation in cows with low GPx activity seems to support udder defense mechanisms that favor reduction of the incidence of new mastitis cases. 相似文献

Increased recycling of organic wastes has raised concern about the quality of compost end products. In addition to the limit values for heavy metals and impurities including weeds and pathogens, the quality criteria for compost products should also include criteria for maturity. There is a tremendous number of maturity assays, developed earlier by several authors, and recommended to be used to evaluate maturity of composts. Because no such single test alone reliably demonstrates the complex properties occurring during maturization of compost, we developed a fast and easy-to-use two-phase test scheme for the assessment of maturity. In the first phase the degradation phase e.g. stability of compost samples is evaluated by using a carbon dioxide evolution test and/or determination of the NO3-N/NH4-N ratio by simple test strips. In the second phase, the toxicity of the compost is evaluated by a plant growth test, germination tests and/or the Flash bioluminescence test. Eleven plants composting sewage sludge, source-separated biowaste, manure or a combination of these raw materials were sampled after 1-3 weeks of composting and when the compost was considered “ready for use”. Chemical and physical analyses were considered useful as additional information when evaluating maturity especially when the results were not conclusively clear. This fast and easy-to-use test scheme was designed especially for the composting plant operators and official laboratories responsible for evaluating compost quality. 相似文献

Volatile emission profile of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) plants (cvs. Polka and Honeoye) damaged by cyclamen mite (Phytonemus pallidus Banks) or leaf beetle Galerucella tenella (L.) (cv. Polka) was analyzed to determine the potential of these strawberry plants to emit herbivore-induced volatiles. The total volatile emissions as well as emissions of many green leaf volatiles (e.g., (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol and (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate) and methyl salicylate were greater from cyclamen mite-damaged strawberry plants than from intact plants. Leaf beetle feeding increased emissions of monoterpenes (Z)-ocimene and (E)-beta-ocimene, sesquiterpenes (E)-beta-caryophyllene, (E,E)-alpha-farnesene, and germacrene-D, and a homoterpene (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT) significantly. Nevertheless, the na?ve generalist predatory mites, Neoseiulus cucumeris, Neoseiulus californicus, and Euseius finlandicus did not prefer P. pallidus- or G. tenella-damaged plants over intact plants in a Y-tube olfactometer, suggesting that these predatory mite species are not attracted by the herbivore-induced volatiles being released from young strawberry plants. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effective refractive index of thermally modified Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood specimens as a quantitative measure regarding the change of wood density which is due to the thermal modification.
The refractive index of thermally modified Scots pine wood was obtained by introducing pine wood powder into an immersion
liquid and measuring light backscattering with a homebuilt multifunction spectrophotometer. The present method provides useful
information that in principle can be applied, for example, in the optimization of the thermal modification process and inspection
of the quality of thermally modified wood. 相似文献

This study examined effects of surface modification with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on adhesive bond performance in birch veneer bonded with phenol–formaldehyde resin. The veneer was treated with 5% of H2O2 at 80 °C in the presence of alkali with the objective of improving adhesive bond performance and reducing the resin demand. The effects of the surface modification were determined by surface color measured with a spectrophotometer, bond performance tests with ABES (automated bonding evaluation system) and surface hydrophobicity with sessile contact angle measurements. Results demonstrated that veneer surface became significantly whiter, which also increased in lightness and decreased in redness and yellowness. ABES test revealed that a remarkable increase in bond performance in the treated veneer and the maximum bond strength with the treatment at 60 min, which was nearly twice as high as reference sample (5.42 → 9.94 N/mm2), was obtained. A notable decrease in contact angle measurements was also observed in the treated veneers (0° in 0.5 s). The surface modification of birch veneer with H2O2 + alkali demonstrated greater potential for the improvement of physical characteristics in veneer surface. Other aspects of H2O2 consumption during the treatment are also discussed. 相似文献

Isolation and characterization of a reovirus from common eiders (Somateria mollissima) from Finland 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Samples of brain, intestine, liver, lung, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius were collected from five common eider (Somateria mollissima) duckling carcasses during a die-off in the western Gulf of Finland (59 degrees 50'N, 23 degrees 15'E) in June 1996. No viral activity was observed in specific-pathogen-free chicken embryos inoculated with tissue suspensions, but samples of bursa of Fabricius from three birds were positive when inoculated into Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) embryo fibroblasts. The isolates were characterized as nonenveloped RNA viruses and possessed several characteristics of the genus Orthoreovirus. Virus particles were icosahedral with a mean diameter of 72 nm and were stable at pH 3.0; their genome was separated into 10 segments by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducklings experimentally infected with the eider reovirus showed elevated serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase enzymes and focal hemorrhages in the liver, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius. During 1997-99, the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies to the isolated virus ranged from 0 to 86% in 302 serum samples collected from incubating eider hens at three nesting areas along coastal Finland. The highest seroprevalence was found in Hanko in 1999, just weeks before reports of an uninvestigated mortality event resulting in the death of an estimated 98% of ducklings at that location. These findings raise the question of potential involvement of the virus in poor duckling survival and eider population declines observed in several breeding areas along coastal Finland since the mid-1980s. 相似文献

A non-steady-state model of water tension propagation in tree stems was developed. The model is based on the cohesion theory and the assumption that fluctuating water tension driven by transpiration together with the elasticity of wood cause variations in the diameter of a tree stem. The change in xylem diameter can be linked to water tension in accordance with Hooke's law. The model was tested against field measurements of the diurnal change in xylem diameter at different heights in a 180-year-old Scots pine tree at Hyyti?l?, southern Finland. Model predictions agreed well with measurements. The effect of tree dimensions on pressure propagation was examined with the model. The model outcomes were also consistent with results of several field measurements presented in the literature. 相似文献

Radial growth was examined in two Scots pine stands that were seeded during the 1920s and 1930s due to reforestation and afforestation
activity on the timberline of northern Finnish Lapland. Tree-rings of seeded pines were calibrated against the instrumental
records of local weather and large-scale atmospheric patterns and further compared to pines of natural origin on the timberline.
The studied stands were shown to contain common growth variability that differed from the variability of natural pines. Deviating
growth of seeded pines was attributed to their only moderate growth dependence on mid-summer (July) temperatures and, likewise,
their strong dependence on the autumn climate in the previous year, and linked to the different genetic origin of artificial
stands due to southern seeds. Stands were thinned for different densities in 1985 and 1986. The growth response to thinning
was markedly better than could be expected according to previous studies. We found that the positive growth reaction conceivably
benefited from the ameliorated winter conditions, expressed as warmed (March) temperatures and the prolonged positive phase
of the Arctic Oscillation (February). The results emphasize the determining influence of climatic fluctuations on reforestation
and afforestation near the distributional limits of tree species. 相似文献
