Escherichia coli is a common avian pathogen mainly associated with extraintestinal infections such as yolk sac infection (YSI). The aim of this study was to determine the serotypes and the presence of some virulence genes of E. coli strains isolated from different samples in a vertically integrated poultry operation in Mexico. Two hundred sixty-seven E. coli isolates from different samples were serotyped using rabbit serum against the 175 somatic (O) and 56 flagellar (H) antigens of the typing schema. Virulence genes were determined by colony blot hybridization, using DNA probes for st, eae, agg1, agg2, bfp, lt, cdt, slt, and ipaH diarrhea-associated virulence factors. The serogroup of 85% of the strains was determined; O19 (12%), 084 (9%), 08 (6%), and 078 (5%) were the most common. Using the complete antigenic formula (O and H), O19:NM (n = 31) was the serotype most frequently isolated from dead-in-shell embryos and in broilers that had died on the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh days after hatch. One hundred ten strains (41.2%) hybridized with one or more of the used probes. Of these, ipaH (72%), eae (30%), and cdt (27%) were the most common. Considering the origin of the respective isolates, 40% of the broiler farm strains were positive for at least one probe. Results show that some avian E. coli strains isolated in Mexico are included in avian pathogenic E. coli serotypes not previously reported, suggesting that they could be specific for this geographic area. The wide distribution of the ipaH gene among nonmotile strains suggests that this invasiveness trait could be important in YSI pathogenesis. This paper describes in detail a combined dorsal and intraoral approach for maxillectomy for tumors involving tissues more caudal to the third premolar. The only intraoperative complication was that of blood loss, with six out of 20 dogs requiring a single unit of blood. Histopathologically clean margins were obtained in 14 of the 20 cases, with a recurrence rate of 50% in these dogs and a median time to recurrence of 24 months. This represents an improvement in outcome over previously reported studies, and the authors postulate this is due to the better exposure and access to the area afforded by the combined approach over the standard intraoral approach. 相似文献

Feline ocular sarcomas are malignant intraocular neoplasms that are frequently associated with a history of ocular trauma. They usually present as fibrosarcomas, but some have both epithelial and mesenchymal features. The purpose of this study was to determine the cell of origin of a subset of feline intraocular sarcomas that display a mixed epithelial-mesenchymal phenotype, with elaboration of basement membrane-type matrix. We examined the morphology and histochemical and immunohistochemical phenotypes of nine feline intraocular sarcomas. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were performed to detect expression of crystallin alpha A. In addition, tumors were examined for expression of vimentin, cytokeratin, smooth muscle actin, desmin, melan A, neural cell adhesion molecule, S-100, glial fibrillary acidic protein, nerve growth factor receptor, and collagen type IV. Animals ranged from 7 to 17 years of age--no breed or sex predilection for tumor occurrence was present. Tumors were characterized by mixed epithelial and mesenchymal phenotypes, both of which elaborated basement membrane-type material and expressed vimentin highly. On the basis of collagen type IV and crystallin alpha A immunopositivity, we established that three of nine tumors were of lens epithelial origin. Expression of desmin and smooth muscle actin identified one tumor as a leiomyosarcoma. The remainder were undifferentiated sarcomas of myofibroblastic origin. This is the first report of lens epithelial neoplasia in clinical material from any species. The history and morphologic features of feline ocular sarcomas are reminiscent of feline vaccine-induced sarcomas. These tumors may share pathophysiologic similarities unique to this species. 相似文献

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Contamination and infection of synovial cavities are a common occurrence in clinical practice and, if inadequately treated, may have career or life threatening consequences for affected horses. HYPOTHESIS: The objectives in treating contamination and infection of joints, tendon sheaths and bursae are most effectively met by endoscopic surgery. METHODS: Over a 6 year period, cases of synovial contamination and infection admitted to a referral clinic were evaluated and treated endoscopically. The horses received local and systemic antimicrobial drugs with minimal nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication but no other medical or surgical treatment. All arthroscope and instrument portals and, whenever possible, all traumatic wounds were closed. Diagnostic information, endoscopic observations and results of treatment were evaluated retrospectively. RESULTS: A total of 140 affected animals were referred and 121 cases were treated endoscopically. These involved 70 joints, 29 tendon sheaths, 10 bursae and in 12 cases a combination of synovial cavities. The most common aetiologies were open wounds (n = 54) and self-sealing punctures (n = 41). Foreign material was identified endoscopically in 41 but predicted prior to surgery in only 6 cases. Osteochondral lesions were evident at surgery in 51 and recognised before surgery in 25 cases; 32 horses had intrathecal tendon or ligament defects. Follow-up information was obtained for 118 animals; 106 (90%) survived and 96 (81%) returned to their preoperative level of performance. The presence of osteitis/osteomyelitis, other osteochondral lesions and marked deposits of pannus were associated with nonsurvival. For those animals which survived, non-Thoroughbred horses, a combination of synovial structure involvement and regional i.v. antimicrobial administration were associated with reduced post operative performance. Marked pannus, regional i.v. antimicrobial administration and duration of systemic antimicrobial administration were associated with a group combining nonsurviving animals and those with reduced post operative performance. CONCLUSIONS: Endoscopic surgery makes a valuable contribution to the management of synovial contamination and infection. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: The information obtained from and therapeutic options offered by endoscopy justify its early use in cases of synovial contamination and infection. 相似文献

The measurement of protein concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid is a basic analytical method in neurology. In this study, a pyrogallol red technique using a human albumin calibrator previously validated in human medicine was tested for canine samples, and the results were compared with those obtained using urine test strips. Pyrogallol red significantly (P<0.05) but moderately underestimated purified dog albumin and globulins. The imprecision of the technique was low: intra- and between-series coefficients of variation were 1.6 and 4.3 per cent at protein concentrations of about 0.3 g/litre. Over 49 samples, there was good agreement between the pyrogallol red and test strip results (r=0.63), especially for low and high protein concentrations, but misclassifications were observed with '+' test strip readings. 相似文献

The objective of this research was to examine the effect of high concentrations of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) on the voluntary food intake of sheep fed high-quality grasses. Wether lambs (n = 6 per treatment) were fed dried switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.; Exp. 1) or dried tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.; Exp. 2). In both experiments, urea was added to the dried forage at 0 (control), 12, or 24 g of N/kg of DM to increase the NPN concentration. Acid detergent fiber concentrations were 305 g/kg of DM in both experiments, although DM digestibility was 663 and 618 g/ kg of DM in Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, respectively. Voluntary feed intake of the control forage was 28.2 and 19.1 g/ kg of BW in Exp. 1 and Exp. 2, respectively, and decreased for the high-urea treatments to 25.2 and 16.2 g/kg of BW in Exp. 1 (P = 0.07) and Exp 2 (P = 0.03), respectively. Total feed N concentrations increased from 29.5 g to 45.7 g of N/kg of DM in Exp. 1 (P < 0.01) and from 28.4 to 55.9 g of N/kg of DM in Exp. 2 (P < 0.01). Nonprotein N concentrations increased from 28.3 to 53.8% of the total N in switchgrass diets (Exp. 1; P < 0.01), and from 26.4 to 64.0% in tall fescue diets (Exp. 2; P < 0.01). Plasma urea concentrations of the lambs increased from 3.1 to 6.6 mM (Exp. 1; P < 0.01) and from 2.9 to 5.8 mM (Exp. 2; P < 0.01) as the amount of urea added to the diets increased. These changes resulted in an increase in plasma osmolality from 298 to 307 mOsm/kg (Exp. 1; P = 0.04), and from 299 to 307 mOsm/kg (Exp. 2; P = 0.06). Increasing feed N and NPN concentrations through the addition of urea caused a significant decrease in the voluntary feed intake of sheep fed tall fescue and switchgrass. Cysts in the dental cavities of dogs are rare. This report documents the case of a young boxer that was referred after having had treatment for bilateral oral swellings. Dentigerous cysts were tentatively diagnosed. Surgery was performed to aspirate the fluid and remove the first premolars, which were positioned in the cysts. AIM: To determine whether the generic composition of nematode parasites in lactating ewes varies between geographic regions in New Zealand and whether age and fecundity of ewes affect nematode egg output. METHODS: Four ram breeding properties in each of the northern (NNI) and southern (SNI) North Island and the northern South Island (NSI) regions, together with six properties in the southern South Island (SSI) were investigated. Faecal samples were obtained on one occasion, 2-6 weeks after lambing, from at least 60 ewes on each property, stratified according to age and reproductive status. Nematode eggs were counted and coprocultures prepared to identify genera present. Information on the history of anthelmintic use on each property was also collected. RESULTS: Highest faecal egg counts (FEC) were observed from ewes in the NNI and SSI regions. Lambed hoggets and twin-rearing two-tooth ewes had higher FEC than their unlambed or single-lamb-rearing contemporaries, respectively. However, no significant effect of reproductive effort on FEC was demonstrated in mixed-aged ewes. Significant regional differences in generic composition of nematode parasites were observed: Teladorsagia spp (also referred to as Ostertagia spp) eggs made up 56% of total eggs shed from sheep in the SSI compared with14% in the NNI, and values for Haemonchus spp were 1%and 24% for these same regions, respectively. Trichostrongylus colubriformis and T. vitrinus together made up 7, 15, 13 and15% of eggs counted from sheep in the SSI, NSI, SNI and NNI, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: More comprehensive epidemiological information may suggest regional-specific approaches to the management of nematode parasites in ewes should be devised in the future. 相似文献
