Ruil (Nothofagus alessandrii) is an endangered keystone species from the Mediterranean climate zone of Chile. Ruil’s fragile state of conservation urges development of restoration programs, but specific protocols for nursery production and field establishment that ensure plant survival are largely unknown. Therefore, we examined the effect on nitrogen (N) fertilization and container size during nursery production in combination with the use of mesh shelters after outplanting on survival and growth during the first growing season in the field. First year outplanting survival of nursery-grown container seedlings was enhanced when seedlings were given nitrogen (N) during nursery production and deployed with mesh tree shelters in the field. The volume of the container had no effect on outplanting survival and growth. Increasing N from zero to 200 mg N L?1 provided sufficient N levels, resulting in increased seedling height, root-collar diameter, shoot biomass, and total seedling N and phosphorous concentrations. Additional N provided by the 400 and 600 mg N L?1 treatments underwent luxury consumption by the seedlings with no further benefits in field performance. Improved growth in the nursery, along with the use of mesh tree shelters after outplanting, especially during the typical summer drought, may be responsible for increased survival during the first growing season. Increasing the performance of nursery-grown ruil seedlings is essential to restoring this endangered, vulnerable, and foundation species within the highly biodiverse, yet seriously threatened endemic Maulino Costero Forest of the Mediterranean climate of central Chile.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are found widespread in nature and possess antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. Due to their multifunctional properties, these peptides are a focus of growing body of interest and have been characterized in several fish species. Due to their similarities in amino-acid composition and amphipathic design, it has been suggested that neuropeptides may be directly involved in the innate immune response against pathogen intruders. In this review, we report the molecular characterization of the fish-specific AMP piscidin1, the production of an antibody raised against this peptide and the immunohistochemical identification of this peptide and enkephalins in the neuroepithelial cells (NECs) in the gill of several teleost fish species living in different habitats. In spite of the abundant literature on Piscidin1, the biological role of this peptide in fish visceral organs remains poorly explored, as well as the role of the neuropeptides in neuroimmune interaction in fish. The NECs, by their role as sensors of hypoxia changes in the external environments, in combination with their endocrine nature and secretion of immunomodulatory substances would influence various types of immune cells that contain piscidin, such as mast cells and eosinophils, both showing interaction with the nervous system. The discovery of piscidins in the gill and skin, their diversity and their role in the regulation of immune response will lead to better selection of these immunomodulatory molecules as drug targets to retain antimicrobial barrier function and for aquaculture therapy in the future.  相似文献

Time series of European sardine (Sardina pilchardus) landings from 1962 and environmental variables from 1978 in the northern Alboran Sea are analysed. European sardine spawns in the northern Alboran Sea from mid‐autumn to late winter at a temperature range slightly higher than the one observed in the nearby Eastern North Atlantic and the North Western Mediterranean. Individuals hatched during autumn and winter are incorporated to the fishery during the following summer and autumn producing the maximum annual landings. These landings show both a decreasing long‐term trend and a strong inter‐annual variability. Although further research is needed, the warming trend of sea surface temperature and the decrease in upwelling intensity inferred from empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analyses could have some influence on the negative trends of sardine landings. The inter‐annual variability of sardine abundance seems to be related to the wind intensity at a local scale, the second principal component of the chlorophyll concentration and the sardine abundance during the preceding year. If the inter‐annual variability is considered, a linear model including these three variables with a one‐year time lag allows to explain 79% of the sardine landings variance. If the negative linear trend is also considered, the model explains 86% of the variance. These results indicate that the body condition of spawners, linked to the food availability during the preceding year, is the main factor controlling the recruitment success. The possibility of predicting sardine landings 1 year in advance could have important implications for fishery management.  相似文献

The decline and endangerment of native fish has led to an increase in hatcheries that sustain and augment threatened and endangered species. In an effort to restore self‐sustaining populations, hatchery‐reared Bonytail (Gila elegans) are released into the lower Colorado River annually. Current augmentation protocols for Bonytail require a minimum stocking size of 300 mm total length due to greater apparent survival of larger individuals. The fish culture process of reaching this desired target size requires multiple years of growth, during which precocious individuals regularly spawn. Recruitment in production ponds increases densities, potentially reducing growth rates and adversely affecting culture conditions. Polyculture techniques have been shown to have synergistic effects and under proper conditions effectively control unwanted biota. In an effort to address the management implications of Bonytail recruitment on adult growth and survival, we tested the use of a historically co‐occurring piscivore, Colorado Pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius), as a biological control agent. Colorado Pikeminnow effectively controlled Bonytail recruitment and had a positive effect on adult growth rates. Our results suggest polyculture of these two species can aid management actions by increasing augmentation efforts.  相似文献

Phenylalanine is the precursor of tyrosine, which is involved in the synthesis of several molecules with key roles in the regulation of metabolism and growth, stress response and pigmentation. In this study, three experimental diets were tested: an amino acid (AA) balanced diet supplemented with phenylalanine, another supplemented with phenylalanine and tyrosine and a non‐supplemented AA balanced diet. Rotifers were enriched with liposomes encapsulating free AA in order to obtain a balanced AA profile. The experimental diets resulted in similar larval survival, growth, enzyme activities of AA catabolism and nitrogen excretion in all treatments. High levels of skeletal deformities were registered and significant differences were found between the control and the phenylalanine treatment for the percentage of vertebral compressions in the trunk region of the vertebral column (30% in the control and 5% in the phenylalanine group). A significantly higher survival to a temperature stress test was found for larvae fed the diet supplemented with phenylalanine and tyrosine. The results suggest that supplementation of phenylalanine/tyrosine in fish diets may be useful in order to reduce skeletal deformities and mortalities caused by stress. The present study confirms that AA requirements may be sufficient for covering growth and survival but insufficient to cover other metabolic processes.  相似文献

Studying the level of sense of belonging in industrial districts is a key factor in understanding how firms acquire knowledge. This paper focuses on how the strength of ties and trust developed in interorganizational relationships drives the sense of belonging to the industrial district and leads firms to acquire knowledge. The proposed model was applied to a sample of 166 companies located in the industrial districts of the Spanish footwear industry. The findings suggest that the level of sense of belonging alone does not allow firms in industrial districts to directly acquire external knowledge. Only companies that are able to utilize their greater level of sense of belonging to industrial districts to generate strong and trusting relationships with other agents will acquire relevant knowledge. The study provides important empirical and theoretical contributions and several implications for managers.  相似文献

Seed germination and seedling establishment are critical stages in plant life history, and both processes may be affected when buried under soil. Our aim was to investigate the effects of soil burial on the germination and seedling establishment of invasive Prosopis juliflora (Fabaceae). We studied the effects of burial, from soil surface to 4?cm deep, under greenhouse conditions and the effects of seed-storing in burial conditions at two depths (5 and 20?cm) and two storing periods (during 6 and 12?months) in field conditions. Soil burial limited the germination and the establishment of P. juliflora, which did not germinate at soil depths deeper than 3?cm. Some seedlings coming from seeds germinated at 2?cm, and every seedling at the soil surface and at 3?cm deep died. In contrast, survivorship of emerged seedlings was close to 90% between 0.5 and 2?cm depth. Seedlings developed the longest shoots at 1?cm deep, indicating that P. juliflora was able to get advantage at a moderate soil depth. Un-embedded seeds survived buried in the soil for months; however, their germination and the emerged seedling survivorship decreased after burial for 12?months.  相似文献
