The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of rosemary essential oils (REO) and the forage nature on ewes' performances, immune response and lambs' growth and mortality. Forty‐eight dairy ewes (Sicilo‐Sarde) were fed oat‐hay or oat‐silage supplemented with 400 g of concentrate during pregnancy and 600 g during postpartum. The experimental concentrate contained the same mixture as the control (barley, soybean meal and mineral vitamin supplement) more 0.6 g/kg of REO. Two groups were obtained with each forage (Hay groups: H‐C and H‐REO; Silage groups: S‐C and S‐REO). REO increased the dry matter (DM) intake, the nitrogen intake and retention being higher with the silage groups (P < 0.05). REO increased solid non‐fat (P = 0.004) and fat contents of colostrum which was higher with hay (P = 0.002). REO decreased lamb mortality (P < 0.05) which averaged 21% for control groups and 6% for H‐REO, while no mortality was recorded with S‐REO. REO dietary supply improved forage intake and tended to ameliorate colostrum production; it could be a natural additive to improve ewes' performances. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to detect Leishmania infantum DNA by real-time PCR in urine from different groups of dogs with clinical leishmaniosis. Urine from 10 clinically healthy dogs and 43 dogs with clinical leishmaniosis diagnosed by positive serology and/or bone marrow PCR were studied. The group of 43 dogs with clinical leishmaniosis was divided into three subgroups: 13 dogs with renal insufficiency and proteinuria (urine protein-creatinine ratio greater than one), 13 dogs with only proteinuria, and 17 dogs with neither renal insufficiency nor proteinuria. The detection of Leishmania DNA was performed by light cycler real-time PCR using hybridization probes in each urine sample. Leishmania positive PCR was found in 47% (20/43) of the urine from leishmaniotic dogs, while all urine from clinically healthy dogs were negative. The percentages of positive Leishmania PCR were 85% (11/13) in dogs with renal insufficiency and proteinuria, 23% (3/13) in dogs with proteinuria and 35% (6/17) in dogs with neither renal insufficiency nor proteinuria. Dogs with renal insufficiency and proteinuria presented a statistical significant greater percentage of positive Leishmania PCR in urine when compared with the other subgroups (P<0.02). This study demonstrates the presence of Leishmania DNA in urine of dogs with leishmaniosis. Those dogs with severe renal damage present a greater number of Leishmania parasites in urine. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques have been used to detect fibrin deposits in different tissues in humans and experimental animal models with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Fibrin deposits also have been observed in horses with severe ischemic and inflammatory disorders by histochemical stainings (phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin [PTAH]). HYPOTHESIS: Immunohistochemical (IHC) methods can be used to accurately detect fibrin deposits in horses at risk of DIC. ANIMALS: Tissue-organ samples collected on postmortem examination from 87 horses with severe inflammatory and ischemic gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, tissue samples from 13 horses with colic and colonic obstructions or displacements and from 13 slaughter horses were used as controls. METHODS: Tissue samples (kidney, lung, and liver) were stained with PTAH and IHC for blinded histologic examination and comparison. A fibrin score (grades 0 to 4) was established for each tissue sample and for each horse for both techniques. RESULTS: When the IHC method was used, fibrin deposition was observed in 47.1% of the horses with colic with a poor prognosis, compared with 41.4% with PTAH. An agreement of 70% was achieved when both methods were compared, and the lung was confirmed as the most affected organ. Almost none of the colic and slaughter control horses had fibrin deposits in their tissues. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: IHC technique for fibrin antigens was very effective in the detection and identification of fibrin deposits in equine tissues and may be a reliable technique for the postmortem diagnosis of DIC. 相似文献

Continued contact between humans and animals, in combination with the ever-increasing movement of human and animal populations that is one effect of globalization, contributes to the spread of diseases, often with detrimental effects on public health. This has led professionals involved in both animal health and public health to recognize veterinary public health (VPH) as a key area for their activities to address the human-animal interface. Veterinarians, a profession with major involvement in this field, are in need of specific knowledge and skills to prevent and control public-health problems. As a result, VPH must be directly integrated into veterinary educational programs. At present, only few veterinary schools have specific VPH programs; in most institutions, VPH does not feature as a specific subject in either undergraduate or post-graduate curricula. SAPUVET and SAPUVETNET II are network projects supported by the ALFA program of the European Union (EU). Their main objectives are to reach a common understanding between European and Latin American universities in the definition of the areas in which VPH is important in their respective countries, and to design a harmonized training program for veterinarians in VPH, by making use of new technological applications and innovative teaching methodologies. The elaboration of educational material in combination with case studies presenting real-life problems provides a basis to apply the knowledge acquired on VPH. It is envisaged that the material and modules developed during the two projects will be integrated into the veterinary curricula of the participating universities, as well as in other partner organizations. 相似文献

Seasonal variations in osmoregulatory and metabolic parameters were assessed in juvenile gilthead sea bream ( Sparus auratus ) cultured in earthen ponds under a natural photoperiod and temperature. Specimens were sampled, and the plasma, gill, kidney and liver were collected during winter 2005 and 2006 (January), spring 2005 (April), summer 2005 (July) and autumn 2005 (October). Plasma osmoregulatory parameters showed higher values in summer, while metabolic parameters presented different patterns of variations. Gill Na+ ,K+ -ATPase activity decreased significantly in winter, while gill metabolite levels showed different patterns of variations among seasons. The enzymatic activities tested did not present a clear pattern of variation [(glutamate dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.2) (GDH) and hexokinase (EC 2.7.1.11) (HK)] or significant differences along seasons [glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.49)]. Kidney Na+ ,K+ -ATPase activity decreased during summer and autumn. Different patterns of variation were observed in kidney metabolite levels while all the enzymatic activities assessed [lactate dehydrogenase-oxidase (EC 1.1.1.27) (LDH-O), HK and GDH] presented the highest values during summer. In the liver, metabolite levels and enzymatic activities did not show significant variations or present clear patterns of variation along different seasons. These results indicated seasonal variations in the osmoregulatory and metabolic parameters of different organs (blood, gill, kidney and liver) in earthen pond-cultured gilthead sea bream ( S. auratus ), which could be mainly attributed to seasonal changes in temperature. 相似文献

Counting of the growth layers in the earplugs is the most accepted technique for determining chronological age of Antarctic minke whales; however, unreadable growth layers form in some individuals, especially in young animals. In this study, aspartic acid racemization (AAR) technique was developed for estimating ages in this species with the aim of complementing the age estimated using earplugs. To validate the technique and to determine the specific coefficients for age estimation, the ratio of d and l-enantiomers of aspartic acid (Asp D/L) in lens of 18 whales and 20 fetuses were analyzed and compared with earplug-based age estimates. The equation for age estimation by AAR in this species was as follows: Loge{[1 + (Asp D/L)act]/[1 ? (Asp D/L)act]} = 2.30 × 10?3 × earplug age (year) + 0.0201 (p < 0.001, r 2 = 0.918). There is a strong correlation between the age estimates by AAR and earplugs. This study was successful in developing the AAR technique for the Antarctic minke whale, and the application of this technique can complement the age estimation of this species based on earplug readings, especially for young animals with unreadable earplugs. 相似文献

Shrimp aquaculture effluents were bioremediated in a two‐phase system (System A) using the black clam Chione fluctifraga and the benthic microalgae Navicula sp., and then reused to farm whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. In the experimental design, Systems B and C had an identical structure as System A, but no clams or microalgae were added. System B received the same shrimp effluents while System C received only estuarine water. Shrimp raw effluents had a poor water quality. System A improved the water quality by decreasing the concentrations of total nitrogen, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, total suspended solids (TSS) and organic suspended solids (OSS). System B also decreased the concentration of TAN, TSS and OSS via sedimentation, but the effect was less pronounced than that observed in System A. Shrimp reared in the bioremediated effluents (System A) had better production (3166 kg ha?1) and higher survival (89.2%) than those reared in effluents from Systems B (2610 kg ha?1, 75.1%) and C (2874 kg ha?1, 82.1%). It is concluded that the bioremediation system was moderately efficient and the bioremediated effluents were suitable to farm L. vannamei. 相似文献

The photochemical degradation of metamitron (4-amino-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-6-phenyl-1,2,4-triazin-5-one) and imidacloprid (1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine) has been investigated by differential-pulse polarography (DPP) and micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC); the degradation pathways of these pesticides were elucidated and their degradation products proposed. The electrochemical study of imidacloprid by DPP at different pH values demonstrated the occurrence of two different reduction processes; at pH 6.8, two peaks at −0.90 V and −1.38 V, respectively, were obtained, which are related to the photochemical reduction processes. The photochemical degradation of imidacloprid caused by sunlight was polarographically monitored and its degradation products elucidated. The polarographic reduction of deaminometamitron (obtained by photochemical reduction of metamitron) yielded two peaks at −0.62 and −1.37 V, which are related to the reduction of the CN bonds. The effect of sunlight on the reduction of metamitron was monitored by DPP, and an increase of the concentration of the degradation products was observed with time. MEKC with UV-visible detection was used to separate the pesticides and the products of their photochemical degradation, which were identified in combination with DPP. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献
