Adactyly (terminal transverse hemimelia) is a rare condition in the cat. The clinical and radiographic findings in a one-year-old cat with bilateral hindlimb adactyly are described. The cat was treated conservatively and appeared to cope well with its deformity. 相似文献
Measurement of allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a common practice in the investigation of allergy. It has not been possible to measure porcine IgE due to unavailability of anti-porcine IgE. This study was undertaken to purify and characterize porcine IgE from sera of allergic pigs, identify heterologous anti-IgE reactive with pig IgE and to use purified heavy (H) chain of porcine IgE to generate rabbit anti-IgE. A four-step process for the purification of porcine IgE is reported using ammonium sulphate precipitation, Protein G affinity chromatography, DEAE cellulose anion-exchange chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) to obtain IgE H chain. The resultant IgE was evaluated for purity using SDS-PAGE and immunoreactivity was detected by Prausnitz-Küstner (PK) tests and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis with the allergen, crude peanut extract, used to induce experimental allergy. Cross-reactivity with anti-mouse and anti-human IgE antibodies were confirmed in western blot and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The H chain of IgE was excised from SDS-PAGE gels and used to develop rabbit anti-porcine IgE antisera. Antiserum obtained from rabbits immunized with porcine IgE, as well as heterologous murine and human-specific anti-IgE, induced reverse cutaneous anaphylaxis in pig skin and detected allergen-specific IgE in ELISA but did not react with IgG H chain in western blots. These results confirm allergy-associated bioactivity of porcine IgE and describe both homologous and heterologous anti-pig IgE suitable for use in allergen-specific and other assays. A comparative analysis of skeletal muscle structure reveals that production species (nine species, representing three mammalian families and an avian family) have mitochondrial volume fractions (MVF) 37% lower than the non‐production species at equivalent size (17 species, with representatives from 10 mammalian families) ( Fig. 1 ; F1,25 = 4.79; p = 0.039). As MVF provides evidence of oxidative capacity, this comparative analysis indicates that production animals share an exceptionally low oxidative capacity muscle phenotype. A possible bioenergetic reason for this observation, relating to a reduction in the cost of maintaining trans‐membrane ion gradients is briefly discussed. This discussion is framed within a biological economic design theory called symmorphosis and makes predictions about avenues for improvements in livestock bioenergetics. Results from the elbow dysplasia screening program in Bernese Mountain Dogs of Germany were analysed in respect to its relevance for genetic evaluation and breeding. In total 2677 gradings were used. The grading was performed radiographically according to the recommendations of the International Elbow Working Group (IEWG). 75.8% of the dogs were free from visible dysplastic signs, 10.8%, 6.8% and 5.5% were classified to be of Grade 1, 2 and 3, respectively. 1.1% were classified as a borderline case between ED-free and Grade 1. A slight reduction of ED could be observed over years. Males had a 3.1 higher rate of dysplasia than females. Treating ED as a numerical trait, coded proportional to the severity of clinical relevant signs, gave a heritability estimation of 0.188 and a maternal effect of 0.07. From different mating combinations it was found, that ED average was higher in the progeny if one mate was affected but there was no increase in the prevalence with increasing grade of ED in the affected mates. About 10% more affected dogs could be observed, if one mate is affected. Heritability for dichotomic coding the trait was found to be 0.20. From these results can be suggested, that the differentiation in various grades of ED to describe the clinical relevance for the specific dog is helpfull, however, from a breeders point of view, dogs with ED should be treated equally for genetic evaluation. 相似文献
We simulated the effect of extending the voluntary wait period by 100 days on disorder-frequency measures that were based on cow-years (from lactations completed during the 4-year simulation horizon), metric tons of milk yield, and lactational incidence risks. A dynamic stochastic discrete-event simulation model that focuses on clinical and subclinical intramammary infections (IMI), plus clinical metabolic (left-displaced abomasum, ketosis, milk fever) and reproductive (cystic ovarian disease, dystocia, retained placenta, twinning, uterine infection) disorders in dairy herds was used. Although the voluntary wait period was increased by 100 days (50 vs. 150), the predicted difference in simulated days to conception was only 89 days for the extended voluntary wait-period group (which we attributed to higher fertility later in lactation). Herds that had a voluntary wait period of 150 days (compared to the control herds' voluntary wait period of 50 days) were predicted to have significantly lower rates of metabolic and reproductive disorders and clinical mastitis on both cow-year and milk-yield bases. Simulated control herds, on average, produced 8539 kg of milk in an average lactation of 325 days and simulated herds with a 150-day voluntary wait period 10893 kg of milk in an average lactation of 409 days. There was a significantly lower predicted rate and risk of culling for reproductive failure in the extended voluntary wait period group. The predicted lactational incidence risks for subclinical IMI were 18% higher for the extended voluntary wait period group - but extending the voluntary wait period by 100 days was predicted not to increase the risk of any of the other 10 disorders. 相似文献
