This study investigates the use of refined potato protein (RPP) obtained from the potato (Solanum tuberosum) tubers of “Gogu valley” for their antimicrobial properties and its effects on growth performance, apparent nutrient digestibility and microbial populations in feces and large intestine of weanling pigs. Pigs (n = 280; Landrace × Yorkshire × Duroc; average initial body weight of 5.96 ± 0.66 kg; 23 ± 3 d of age) were allotted on the basis of their body weight and sex to five dietary treatments (each treatment comprised of 4 replicate pens with 14 pigs in each) in a randomized complete block design. The dietary treatments were: PC (positive control; basal diet + 150 ppm apramycin sulfate and 10 ppm colistin sulfate), and RPP (basal diet added with 0, 200, 400 and 600 ppm RPP). The RPP showed in vitro antimicrobial activity and at the concentration of 150 ppm inhibited the growth of tested microbes (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella choleraesuis, Salmonella gallinarum and Escherichia coli). Pigs fed with antibiotic diet showed better growth performance and had lower populations of total bacteria, coliforms and Staphylococcus spp. in the feces and large intestine when compared with pigs fed RPP diets. Increasing the levels of RPP in diets linearly improved performance and reduced the populations of total bacteria, coliforms and Staphylococcus spp. in feces and contents of colon and rectum. The apparent fecal digestibility of DM, CP and apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids did not differ among pigs fed antibiotic and RPP diets. These results suggest that antibiotics were more effective in improving the performance of pigs, while feeding of RPP also improved the performance and reduced the harmful microbes being more effective at higher levels. Thus at higher levels RPP obtained from the potato tubers of Gogu valley can be a potential replacement of antibiotics in the feed of weanling pigs.  相似文献

Many species of ornamental fish, includingboth egg-layers and livebearers, exhibit a marked sexualdimorphism due to the more pigmented bodies and larger finsusually observed in males. This results in male fish commandingup to four times the price of females. Because of this pricediscrepancy, the culture of monosex (all-male) stocks ofornamental fish could be of a significant economic advantage.This paper outlines the current sex reversal technology alreadydeveloped for several fish species important for aquaculture andexamines its potential applicability to ornamental fish culture.The methods to obtain all-male stocks include direct androgentreatment and the production of YY males. The direct approach iseasy to implement and straightforward. However, in somelivebearers such as the guppy, treatment of newly born fry iscomplicated because they already have sexually differentiatinggonads and the masculinization may be temporary. Lack of suitable diets for semi‐intensive production of Oreochromis niloticus in Kenya has necessitated use of expensive diets designed for intensive production. To address this problem, two isonitrogenous (24% protein) diets were formulated and evaluated for production of O. niloticus in fertilized ponds. One diet contained vitamins and minerals premix (CV) while the other had no premix (CW). Growth of fish fed on the formulated feeds was compared with groups of fish fed on commercial pig pellets (PP) and wheat bran (WB). There were significant differences in mean weights, growth rates and feed conversion ratios between the formulated and the other diets. No significant differences in these parameters were observed between CV and CW and also between PP and WB. Fish that fed on the formulated feeds produced significantly lower number of juveniles than those fed on PP and WB. Fish fed on WB gave the best economic returns while those on PP had the least returns. Present results suggest that vitamins and minerals premix may not be necessary in diets for semi‐intensive production of O. niloticus. Present results showed that the formulated feeds produced higher yields than PP and WB, but WB had the best economic returns among the test diets.  相似文献

This study investigated the use of vitamin C supplement in formulated diets and live Artemia juveniles to enhance the stress resistance of the guppy Poecilia reticulata . To evaluate the stress resistance, fish were subjected to osmotic shock in pre-aerated water containing 35 ppt sodium chloride. Ascorbyl acid-polyphosphate and ascorbyl palmitate were used as vitamin C sources for formulated diets and live Artemia juveniles, respectively. Results showed that guppies fed moist formulated diets supplemented with ascorbic acid at 1,000 mg/kg or 2,000 mg/kg diet displayed significantly higher levels of stress resistance than fish fed control formulated diet for 13 d. The stress resistance of fish fed a lower dose (200 mg/kg diet), however, did not differ significantly from that of the control. On the other hand, the stress resistance of guppies fed Artemia juveniles bio-encapsulated with 10% or 20% ascorbyl palmitate did not show significant difference from that of fish fed control Artemia after 20 d. The stress resistance of these three groups of Artemia- fed fish, however, was significantly higher than that of fish fed the control formulated diet. Biochemical analyses showed that raising the ascorbic acid level in feeds resulted in a concomitant increase in the incorporated ascorbic acid level in the whole-body tissue of the guppy. The increased stress resistance of the guppy fed a vitamin C supplemented diet has also been demonstrated in four commercial farms. The potential application of the improved stress resistance in the ornamental fish industry was discussed.  相似文献

To evaluate the biological effects of Porphyra tenera (P. tenera), we tried to confirm the possibility that the intake of P. tenera could modulate cognitive and intestinal functions in PM2.5-induced cognitive decline mice. P. tenera attenuated PM2.5-induced learning and memory impairment through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by regulating the mitochondrial function and TLR-initiated NF-κB signaling. In addition, P. tenera effectively alleviated Aβ production/tau phosphorylation by inhibiting the JNK phosphorylation. Also, the bioactive constituents of P. tenera determined the sulfated galactan, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), and chlorophyll derivatives. Moreover, the bioactive compounds of P. tenera by gut fermentation protected against gut dysbiosis and intestinal tight junction damage with a decrease in inflammatory response and short-chain fatty acid production. Based on these results, our findings suggest that P. tenera with sulfated galactan and MAAs is a potential material for cognitive function improvement.  相似文献

Two new lipo-decapeptides, namely taeanamides A and B (1 and 2), were discovered from the Gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces sp. AMD43, which was isolated from a mudflat sample from Anmyeondo, Korea. The exact molecular masses of 1 and 2 were revealed by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the planar structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined using a combined analysis of 1H-1H coupling constants and ROESY correlations, the advanced Marfey’s method, and bioinformatics. The putative nonribosomal peptide synthetase pathway for the taeanamides was identified by analyzing the full genome sequence data of Streptomyces sp. AMD43. We also found that taeanamide A exhibited mild anti-tuberculosis bioactivity, whereas taeanamide B showed significant bioactivity against several cancer cell lines.  相似文献

The intestine and skin provide crucial protection against the external environment. Strengthening the epithelial barrier function of these organs is critical for maintaining homeostasis against inflammatory stimuli. Recent studies suggest that polar marine algae are a promising bioactive resource because of their adaptation to extreme environments. To investigate the bioactive properties of polar marine algae on epithelial cells of the intestine and skin, we created extracts of the Antarctic macroalgae Himantothallus grandifolius, Plocamium cartilagineum, Phaeurus antarcticus, and Kallymenia antarctica, analyzed the compound profiles of the extracts using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and tested the protective activities of the extracts on human intestinal and keratinocyte cell lines by measuring cell viability and reactive oxygen species scavenging. In addition, we assessed immune responses modulated by the extracts by real-time polymerase chain reaction, and we monitored the barrier-protective activities of the extracts on intestinal and keratinocyte cell lines by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance and fluorescence-labeled dextran flux, respectively. We identified bioactive compounds, including several fatty acids and lipid compounds, in the extracts, and found that the extracts perform antioxidant activities that remove intracellular reactive oxygen species and scavenge specific radicals. Furthermore, the Antarctic marine algae extracts increased cell viability, protected cells against inflammatory stimulation, and increased the barrier integrity of cells damaged by lipopolysaccharide or ultraviolet radiation. These results suggest that Antarctic marine algae have optimized their composition for polar environments, and furthermore, that the bioactive properties of compounds produced by Antarctic marine algae can potentially be used to develop therapeutics to promote the protective barrier function of the intestine and skin.  相似文献

Waxy maize (native and hydroxypropylated [HP]) and potato starches were impregnated with ionic gums (sodium alginate, CMC, and xanthan, 1% based on starch solids) and heat‐treated in a dry state for 0, 2, or 4 hr at 130°C. Effects of the dry heating on paste viscosity (RVA) and clarity (light transmittance) were examined. Heat treatment with sodium alginate and CMC raised the paste viscosities of native and HP waxy maize starches, but decreased that of potato starch. Xanthan provided the most substantial changes in paste viscosity among the tested gums. It appeared to heavily restrict granule swelling of the waxy maize starches, but it increased swelling of potato starch granules. Dry heating raised the paste viscosity of all the starch‐gum mixtures tested, except the potato starchalginate mixture. The final viscosity at 50°C of a 7% paste was raised in all other starches by ≈500–1,000 cP by this treatment. The paste of waxy maize starch‐gum products became opaque and shorter textured by the heat treatment, regardless of the gum type, whereas potato starch‐gum products did not show any obvious change in paste clarity. Ionic gums could behave as cross‐linking agents as well as form graft copolymers through heatinduced ester formation. This simple heating process with ionic gums could be used as a modification method for starch.  相似文献

Aqueous dispersions (2 mg/mL) of debranched corn starches of different amylose contents (waxy, normal, and high‐amylose) were subjected to extensive autoclaving and boiling‐stirring, and then the changes in starch chain profile were examined using medium‐pressure, aqueous, size‐exclusion column chromatography. As autoclaving time increased from 15 to 60 min, weight‐average chain length (CLw) of waxy, normal, and high‐amylose corn starches determined using pullulan standards decreased from 46 to 41.2, from 122.1 to 96.3, and from 207.3 to 151.8, respectively. Number‐average chain length (CLn) measured by the Nelson‐Somogyi method also decreased from 23.0 to 18.4, from 26.4 to 21.8, and from 66.5 to 41.5, respectively, indicating that thermal degradation of starch chains occurred. The CLw/CLn ratio for normal corn starch was higher than that for waxy corn starch, indicating an increase in polydispersity of the amylose fraction. Thermal degradation was also observed when the debranched starch was subjected to the boiling‐stirring treatment (0–96 hr). During 96 hr, the CLw and relative proportion of B≥2 chains of amylopectin released by debranching waxy corn starch increased, whereas those of B1 chains decreased. This change may indicate physical aggregation of B1 chains. But branches from normal and high‐amylose corn starches showed increases in CLw and the proportion of both B1 and B≥2 chains, along with substantial decreases in those of amylose chains. Therefore, thermal degradation of amylose was greater than that of amylopectin.  相似文献
