Complications are a reality of fracture repair. Many can be avoided or minimized by being aware of their pathophysiology and predisposing factors. Others are unavoidable but their resolution may be aided by early diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Major complications of fracture repair include osteomyelitis, delayed union, nonunion, malunion, premature physeal closure, and fracture associated sarcoma. Consideration of these complications should factor into presurgical patient evaluation as well as postoperative management. This discussion focuses on how to avoid, recognize, and treat these complications.  相似文献

  1. Crayfish play a crucial ecological role and are often considered a keystone species within freshwater ecosystems; however, North American crayfish species face disturbance and ecological threats including invasive species and intensified drought.
  2. Demographic models can allow examination of population dynamics of a targeted species under a wide variety of disturbance scenarios. In this study, crayfish population dynamics were modelled and their responses to simulated biological invasions and drought were assessed.
  3. As life history data on crayfish are relatively rare, models were used to explore the population viability of four generalized species with distinct life history strategies under 11 disturbance scenarios. RAMAS-Metapop was used to construct stage-based demographic metapopulation models parameterized using vital rates from established literature sources.
  4. Models indicated that populations respond differentially to disturbance based on life history. However, both r- and K-selected species appear to be highly susceptible to decline when faced with the additive effects of reduced carrying capacity resulting from invasion and reduced survival rates caused by drought.
  5. Constructing models that explore a broad array of life histories and disturbance regimes can provide managers with tools to develop generalized, widely applicable conservation strategies in data-depauperate systems.

Summary

The objective of the present study was to characterize some of the anatomical and physiological characteristics of fruit cracking in bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Scanning-electron micrographs show that initiation of fruit cracking in bell pepper is by formation of mini-cracks on the cuticle layer; these then enlarge into cracks and traverse the epidermal cells. Pepper cultivars differ in their sensitivity to cracking, partly because of differences in fruit pericarp thickness. Limitation of night transpiration by high humidity or low temperature increased the turgor potential of the fruit pericarp and enhanced cracking. Likewise, leaf pruning suppressed night transpiration and concomitantly increased cracking. Fruit cuticle transpiration was found to be low in the early stages of fruit development and to increase as the fruit became susceptible to cracking. Environmental conditions which enhanced cracking also increased cuticle transpiration in a sensitive pepper cultivar but not in a less sensitive one. We suggest that fruit cracking in bell pepper occurs because reduction in night transpiration causes high turgor pressure in the fruit. As the cuticle becomes permeable to water, the inner turgor pressure causes the cuticle to crack. Differences in cultivar sensitivity may be partly due to differences in pericarp thickness and cuticle properties, but additional factors may be involved.  相似文献

Objective – To familiarize the reader with the epidemiology, diagnosis, and infectious and zoonotic potential of methicillin-resistant staphylococci.
Data sources – Original research publications, scientific reviews and abstracts, case reports, and conference proceedings.
Human Data Synthesis – Staphylococcus aureus is a common human commensal organism; acquisition of genes encoding an altered penicillin-binding protein confers resistance to β-lactam antimicrobial drugs. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are often resistant to non–β-lactam antimicrobial drugs as well. Originally described as an important cause of nosocomial infection, MRSA colonization and infection are now often identified in humans outside healthcare settings. Like other S. aureus , MRSA may be present without clinical illness. However, when they do cause infection the consequences can be extremely serious.
Veterinary Data Synthesis – The major domestic animal species, including pets and livestock, may become contaminated, colonized, or infected with methicillin-resistant staphylococci, including MRSA. Dogs and cats are more likely to be colonized/infected with Staphylococcus pseudintermedius than S. aureus , but this pathogen can acquire genes encoding methicillin resistance (ie, MRSP). Diagnosis of MRSA or MRSP has implications not only for treatment of infected animals, but for potential zoonotic transmission.
Conclusions – MRSA infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. Animals may be contaminated, colonized, or infected with MRSA, with implications for the animal's health and as a potential reservoir for human infection. Staphylococci other than S. aureus may also acquire genes for methicillin resistance, and these species can also result in animal and occasionally human morbidity or mortality.  相似文献

Food‐grade soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr] used to produce tofu have specific seed composition, shape, size and colour requirements. Seed qualities, such as protein content, have been correlated with tofu texture. The objective of this study was to determine the relationships between textural qualities of tofu and seed characters, including shape, size, density, weight, protein content and oil content. Tofu was produced from the seed of 48 high‐protein or food‐grade soybean lines grown at two locations in 2010. Four tofu textural traits were assessed including work to failure, deformability, stiffness and hardness. Seed protein and oil content were significantly correlated with stiffness and hardness, and protein was additionally correlated with work to failure. Pearson's correlation coefficients ranged from 0.45 to 0.60 (adjusted P‐values < 0.002) for protein and ?0.49 to ?0.35 for oil (adjusted P‐values < 0.016). No significant correlations between tofu texture and seed volume or shape were detected. Seed protein content can be assessed for indirect selection for tofu firmness, whereas this study reveals no evidence that seed size affects tofu texture.  相似文献

The primary goal of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effect of postoperative appetite return in cats premedicated with maropitant citrate. Medical records of 75 cats admitted for gastrointestinal (GI) and urogenital (UG) surgeries were reviewed and analyzed. Buprenorphine analgesia was used with 36 cats (48%) premedicated with maropitant and 39 cats (52%) that were used as a control group. No significant differences in postoperative appetite return were reported with maropitant premedication compared to controls. Age, breed, preoperative weight, surgery type, surgery and anesthesia times, and total hospitalization time were also evaluated and were not reported to be significantly associated with postoperative appetite return. Presenting complaints of hyporexia or anorexia were significantly associated with earlier postoperative appetite return. Results of this study suggest that cats treated with buprenorphine for GI or UG surgeries do not have postoperative appetites return sooner when premedicated with maropitant.  相似文献
