In fish culture, cannibalism, which induces critical damage, is separated into two types: type I, which occurs in early larval stages when size heterogeneity is low; and type II, which starts in later larval and/or early juvenile stages following type I when size heterogeneity is high. In type II, the cannibal's maximum prey size is limited by its gape size relative to the prey fish body size. Ratios of prey to cannibal body size changes are associated with allometric factors and feeding behaviour with growth. In a previous study on grouper, the maximal prey size was estimated morphologically (i.e., the relationship between gape size and body height). This method is very simple and useful; however, it does not consider allometric factors and feeding behaviour changes; therefore, it probably causes a large estimation error. To overcome this, we present a new method for estimating maximal prey size to determine the size ranges for size grading of longtooth grouper, Epinephelus bruneus, juveniles using predation experiments. It is shown that grouper type II cannibalism is affected by two factors; in early juvenile stages by morphology and in later (TL over 50 mm) by prey size selectivity.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to quantify interannual variations of total evaporation (ET) in a tropical rainforest in Sarawak, Malaysia. To this end, we conducted 10-year meteorological measurements and formulated a simplified big-leaf model that reproduces transpiration (Et), rainfall interception (Ei), and ET as the sum of these. The model was validated independently using eddy covariance fluxes, rainfall interception based on throughfall and stemflow measurements, and sap flow measurements conducted for more than 2 years. Using the model, Et, Ei, and ET were estimated for the period 2000-2009. Annual Et, Ei, and ET averaged over 10 years were estimated as 1114, 209, and 1323 mm, respectively, with small seasonal fluctuations. The derived estimates showed conservative year-to-year variations in annual Et, Ei, and ET (CV = 5-7%) in contrast to considerable year-to-year variations in annual rainfall (CV = 11%). Specific rainfall characteristics (e.g. intense short duration storms) at this site can explain the conservative year-to-year Ei variations. Small interannual variations in meteorological conditions and absence of severe drought during the study period can explain the small year-to-year Et variations. To characterize ET at our site, we also compared Ei and ET at our site with those of other tropical forests. Based on the derived ET characteristics, we discuss possible ET changes in response to changes in rainfall regime at this site.  相似文献

Anaerobes were isolated from both disrupted and undisrupted soil samples incubated under submerged condition. All isolates were divided into 9 groups based on their gram stain and morphological characteristics. Correlation coefficients between the amount of nitrogen mineralized and the number of each group were calculated. A significant correlation was observed only between the amount of nitrogen mineralized and the number of gram positive-rod shaped anaerobic microorganisms (r=0.768 at P=0.05). This result indicates that in this study system, sorne particular anaerobes may play an important role in the mineralization of soil organic nitrogen.  相似文献

In this report we studied the effects of mechanical grinding of paddy soils on nitrogen mineralization and bacterial number when soils were incubated under a submerged condition after grinding.

Nitrogen mineralization was increased by grinding soil samples as compared with those without grinding. The value of (Nd-Nu)/Nu, where Nd is the amount of ammonia-nitrogen formed by incubation of disrupted samples and Nu those of the undisrupted soils, was in good correlation with clay/humus ratio.

Although significant difference was not observed between the number of aerobic bacteria with undisrupted and disrupted soil samples, higher anaerobic bacterial numbers were found with disrupted than with undisrupted ones.

A significant correlation was also obtained between the amounts of nitrogen mineralization increased by the grinding of soil and the numbers of anaerobic bacteria.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to clarify the effect of water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content in orchardgrass pasture on the diurnal distribution of grazing time. Six ruminally cannulated, non‐lactating dairy cows were grazed on either of two pastures with different orchardgrass cultivars containing low WSC (LWSC; cultivar: ‘Hokkai 28’) or high WSC (HWSC; cultivar: ‘Harunemidori’). The cows were grazed in morning and evening sessions in experiment 1, whereas the cows were grazed throughout the day in experiment 2. In experiment 1, grazing time of the cows on HWSC was longer than that of the cows on LWSC (P < 0.01). This difference was larger in the morning session than in the evening session (pasture × grazing session: P < 0.05). Effects on herbage intake were similar to those on grazing time. In experiment 2, daily total grazing time was longer for the cows on HWSC than for those on LWSC (P < 0.05). The cows on HWSC spent a longer time grazing than those on LWSC in the morning between 03.00 and 09.00 hours (P < 0.01). The results indicated that prolonged grazing time in the period between dawn and early morning could increase daily herbage intake in cows grazed on pastures of orchardgrass cultivars with high‐WSC content.  相似文献

Ten lactating cows were used to determine the effect of feeding non-fibrous carbohydrate (NFC) supplement before grazing on feed intake and nitrogen (N) utilization throughout a grazing season. The experiment was conducted from June to September. Cows grazed twice a day (2.5 h × 2) under a set stocking system and were fed NFC supplement (1 kg/4 kg of milk yield) 2 h before grazing (PRE) or immediately after grazing (POST). Cows were also fed a grass and corn silage mixture ad libitum. Herbage dry matter intake (DMI) was greater for PRE than for POST throughout the experiment and decreased from June to September. Conversely, silage DMI was less for PRE than for POST throughout the experiment and increased over the grazing season. Consequently, total DMI for PRE did not differ from that for POST. Milk urea-N concentration and urinary urea-N excretion in June did not differ between the treatments, whereas that after July was higher for PRE than for POST. Proportion of urinary N excretion to absorbed N intake in June was lower for PRE than for POST, but that after July was higher for PRE than for POST. Feeding NFC supplement before grazing would improve N utilization when cows eat large amounts of herbage high in N.  相似文献

Prebiotic fructooligosaccharides are noted for their intestinal immunodulating effects, and the identification of markers for the effects is a matter of great concern. This study aimed to identify marker genes for physiological effects of a particular fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on a host animal and also to define the target of its function in the small intestine. DNA microarray technology was used to screen candidate marker genes, and comprehensive changes in gene expressions in the ileum of mice fed with FOS were investigated. One of the major physiological effects of FOS was intestinal immunomodulation. Marker genes were then identified for major histocompatibility complex classes I and II, interferon, and phosphatidylinositol metabolites. Also, the ileum was segmented into Peyer's patch (PP) and the other ileal organ (DeltaPP), and these were analyzed by quantitative RT-PCR method, with the result that the site for recognizing the FOS function was the DeltaPP rather than the PP. This is the first paper showing the markers for the physiological effects of FOS in the small intestine at gene expression level. Applying these marker genes would make it possible to clarify the mechanisms of how the administration of dietary FOS and associated changes in the intestinal environment are recognized by host organisms as well as how its immunomodulating effects are expressed in the body.  相似文献

CaIrO3-type MgSiO3 is the planet-forming silicate stable at pressures and temperatures beyond those of Earth's core-mantle boundary. First-principles quasiharmonic free-energy computations show that this mineral should dissociate into CsCl-type MgO cotunnite-type SiO2 at pressures and temperatures expected to occur in the cores of the gas giants + and in terrestrial exoplanets. At approximately 10 megabars and approximately 10,000 kelvin, cotunnite-type SiO2 should have thermally activated electron carriers and thus electrical conductivity close to metallic values. Electrons will give a large contribution to thermal conductivity, and electronic damping will suppress radiative heat transport.  相似文献

As part of our exploratory drug research on the larva migrans that causes roundworm in dogs and cats, this study was carried out to clarify the effect of free and liposome-entrapped (LE) albendazole in Toxocara canis infected mice. In infected mice, evaluation of mobility and number of larva were examined in detail in the brain, skeletal muscle and liver. Larva mobility was evaluated by using the relative mobility (RM) value. Albendazole was LE as one of the drug delivery systems (DDSs). Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to the liposome in order to avoid evoking a response by the reticuloendothelial system (RES). By using the albendazole PEG-LE delivery system, it was possible to target the larvae in the mouse brain and liver resulting in a decrease in the number of larvae. In the skeletal muscle of the infected mice, the intraperitoneal dosages of PEG-LE albendazole did not cause a complete decrease in the number of larvae, even though free albendazole did cause the number to decrease. Therefore, it is necessary to take into consideration the migrating stage of the larvae before the initiation of any drug administration.  相似文献

The gas exchange of leaves of the Ilex rotunda trees planted at thirteen sites in the city of Fukuoka, Japan, with various sun light conditions and air pollutant concentrations was studied. The highest maximum photosynthetic rate and the stomatal conductance of single leaves were measured under controlled conditions and analyzed with the environmental variables by correlation analysis. The photosynthetic rate of the urban core was highest and that of the suburban area was lowest. The results from the correlation analysis showed that the photosynthetic rate was negatively correlated with sun light conditions and positively correlated with air pollutant concentrations. The reasons for the higher photosynthetic rate in the urban core with poor sun light condition and higher air pollutant concentrations were discussed in relation to stimulation by air pollutant and avoidance of photoinhibition.  相似文献
