The objective of the present study was to investigate the transport and removal of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, bacteriophage MS2, and bacteriophage Phix174 in the soils and pyrophyllite-amended soils. Laboratory columns experiments were performed under saturated flow conditions. Our results showed that bacteriophages passed through the soils more easily than bacteria under the given experimental conditions (pulse injection?=?15 min, flow rate?=?0.5 mL/min, column length?=?20 cm, inner diameter?=?2.5 cm, pH?=?7.6, electrical conductivity (EC)?=?150.1 μS/cm); the log removals of bacteria were in the range of 0.44 to 1.72, whereas the log removals of bacteriophages were between 0.01 and 0.13. Our results also demonstrated that the transport of bacteria and bacteriophages in the soil columns could be reduced considerably in the presence of pyrophyllite. Under the same column experimental conditions above, the log removals for MS2 and Phix174 in 50% soil?+?50% pyrophyllite were 2.64 and 3.05, respectively, whereas the log removals in 100% pyrophyllite were 5.70 for MS2 and 5.10 for Phix174; those values were far greater than the log removals in 100% soil (MS2?=?0.063, Phix174?=?0.128). Additional column experiments (step injection, flow rate?=?0.3 mL/min, column length?=?30 cm, inner diameter?=?2.5 cm, solution pH?=?8.4, EC?=?39.8 mS/cm) showed that the log removals for B. subtilis (1.72) and Phix174 (1.48) in the pyrophyllite were greater than those in the soil (B. subtilis?=?1.41; Phix174?=?0.39). This study demonstrated that the pyrophyllite amendment method could be used for protecting groundwater from microbial contamination by animal carcass burial soils.  相似文献

Water contamination has reached an alarming state due to industrialization and urbanization and has become a worldwide issue. Dyes contaminate water and are addressed extensively by researchers. Various technologies and materials have been developed for the treatment of contaminated water. Among them, adsorption has attracted great attention due to its ease and cost-effective nature. In recent years, graphene-based composites have shown great potential for the removal of contaminants from water. The literature reveals the usefulness of composites of graphene with metal oxides, carbon derivatives, metal hybrids and polymers for the removal of organic dyes from contaminated water. In this review, efforts have been made to compile the studies on the removal of cationic and anionic dyes from water using graphene-based composites.  相似文献

The photo-Fenton oxidation treatment combined with a coagulation/flocculation process was investigated for removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from a refractory petroleum refinery wastewater. Scrap iron shavings were used as the catalyst source. A response surface methodology (RSM) with a cubic IV optimal design was employed for optimizing the treatment process. Kinetic studies showed that the proposed process could be described by a two-stage, second-order reaction model. Experiments showed that precipitation of iron ions can be utilized as a post-oxidation coagulation stage to improve the overall treatment efficiency. More than 96.9% of the COD removal was achieved under optimal conditions, with a post-oxidation coagulation stage accounting for about 30% of the removal, thus confirming the collaborative role of oxidation and coagulation in the overall treatment. A low-velocity gradient of 8.0 s?1 for a short mixing time of 10 min resulted in optimum post-oxidation coagulation. Comparison of photo-Fenton oxidation to a standard Fenton reaction in the same wastewater showed more rapid COD removal for photo-Fenton, with an initial second-order rate constant of 4.0 × 10?4 L mg?1 min?1 compared to the Fenton reaction’s overall second-order rate constant of 7.0 × 10?5 L mg?1 min?1.  相似文献

A dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) method was optimized for the detection of chlorobenzene (CB) compounds in the drying process of municipal and dyeing sludge. Compared with traditional methods, the optimized DLLME not only has a lower limit of detection but also saves analysis time and requires less amount of organic solvent. Using this method in analyzing CB release during sludge drying, we found that drying temperature is the main factor controlling the amount of chlorobenzene release during sludge drying. In addition, we found that most CBs were released when sludge drying entered into the second falling rate stage, i.e., a period when sludge moisture content was low and temperature was high. By analyzing organic matter content in association with CB release during sludge drying, the relationship between organic matter transformation and chlorobenzene release was established. The results provide scientific basis and technical support for assessing the risks of the secondary pollution of CBs from sludge drying.  相似文献

The process for extracting sugarcane juice (Saccharum officinarum) represents the point of greatest contamination in sugarcane mills. Sodium dithiocarbamate also known as metam-sodium or MS is added to inhibit the growth of microorganisms especially Leuconostoc mesenteroides which is responsible for forming polysaccharides. Metam-sodium, upon decomposition, produces highly toxic byproducts. According to literature, under acidic conditions, MS is hydrolyzed resulting in methylamine (MA), CH3NH2, and carbon disulfide (CS2), and in dilute alkaline solutions, MS produces an oxidation reaction characterized by the formation of elemental sulfur (S) and methyl isothiocyanate (MITC). In this paper, it was studied how MS decomposes to MITC and/or MA considering the effects of the matrix (methanol and water); of temperature (4 and 25 °C); of processing time (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 days); and of pH (4.0, 4.5, 7.0). A second experimental design considering the effects of the matrix (water and sugarcane juice); of temperature (4, 25, 35, 45 °C); of processing time (30, 300 min); and of pH (4.0, 4.5, 7.0) was derived from the results obtained considering MITC and/or MA formation. According to the statistical analysis of these results (p < 0.05), the order of the influential factors was as follows: time > matrix > pH > temperature. Results also indicated that the water matrix at pH = 4.5 and 45 °C had the lowest degradation rate (k), with a value of 8.82 day?1, while for the sugarcane juice matrix at the same pH and temperature conditions was larger, with a k value of 30.07 day?1. These results show that the matrix is also important for the degradation of dithiocarbamate to MITC and to MA.  相似文献

Purpose

Concentrations and transformations of mercury were measured in river, estuarine, and marine sediments to determine factors affecting the fate of mercury entering the northern Adriatic Sea.

Materials and methods

Radiotracer methodology was used to compare rates of mercury methylation (203Hg), MeHg demethylation (14C), and sulfate reduction (35S) in sediment depth profiles to concentrations of total and dissolved mercury species in the lower freshwater region of the Isonzo River, the coastal lagoons, and in the Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea.

Results and discussion

Mercury was readily methylated and demethylated in all sediments, but the relative activity of these processes varied greatly with location. Methylation activity increased greatly from freshwater to the marine regions; however, demethylation was extremely high in the estuarine and lagoon sites. Ratios of methylation to demethylation were low in these coastal sites but increased further offshore in the gulf, which agreed with increased ratios of MeHg to total Hg (%MeHg) in gulf sediments. Comparisons of microbial activities indicated that sulfate reduction strongly controlled both methylation and demethylation. However, Hg methylation in coastal lagoon sediments was controlled by rapid demethylation and the bioavailability of Hg that was affected by Hg adsorption and precipitation. Methylation in offshore marine sites correlated with sulfate reduction but not the partitioning of Hg between pore water and solid phases. The decrease in sulfide production offshore exacerbated Hg methylation.

Conclusions

The freshwater to marine gradient in the Idrija/So?a/Isonzo/Adriatic region is dynamic, exhibiting horizontally variable rates of microbial activities and Hg transformations that create “hot spots” of MeHg accumulation that are controlled differently in each region.

This study evaluates quantitatively the suitability of the use of site-specific socio-economic and environmental data as indicators to rapidly assess patterns of diversity and genetic erosion risk in cassava. Socio-economic data as well as farmers’ estimation of genetic erosion were collected in the study area, the Ucayali region of the Peruvian Amazon, through interviews with 285 cassava farmers in 50 communities, while diversity was assessed based on agromorphological characterization of 295 cassava accessions. Using multivariate regression analyses, 50 and 45% of the variation in respectively diversity and genetic erosion estimation could be explained by a selected set of socio-economic and environmental indicators. In both regression models four out of the total of 38 variables proved to contribute significantly (at p < 0.10 level). Additionally, the study revealed that farmers are a good direct source of information on the diversity present at community level, which can contribute to the development of methodologies to assess diversity more rapidly. The results of this study are valuable for the development of models to rapidly assess diversity dynamics in large areas.  相似文献
