Heartwoods of 22 African tropical wood species were extracted with methanol and the contents of total phenolic compounds in these extracts were measured. Three bioassays were conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity, tyrosinase inhibitory activity, and antifungal activity of the methanol extracts. The results indicated that the extracts from 13 species exhibited high antioxidant potential, and their inhibitory concentrations that caused 50% scavenging of the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical (IC50) were less than 10 μg/ml. The crude extract from Cylicodiscus gabunensis showed the highest antioxidant activity, and was even higher than that of (+)-catechin, which is known as a potent antioxidant. There was a good correlation between the antioxidant activity and the content of total phenolic compounds, indicating that phenolic compounds played a predominant role in the antioxidant property of the wood extracts. Among all 22 species, only 1 species, Milicia excelsa, contained extractives that showed very high tyrosinase inhibitory activity. The extracts from 9 species showed high antifungal activity. No consistent relationship was observed between the tyrosinase inhibitory activity or antifungal activity and the content of total phenolics in the extracts. The lesions of histoplasmosis in dogs in Japan differ from those in dogs in North America. Affected dogs in Japan have had multiple granulomatous or ulcerated foci in skin or gingiva and have not had pulmonary or gastrointestinal lesions. The present report introduces a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnosis of canine histoplasmosis and the characteristic of disease in Japan. The surgically removed skin ulcerate samples from a 5-years-old female Shiba-inu native to Japan without traveling out of the country were evaluated. Tissue samples had many yeast-like organisms in the macrophages. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue samples. A nested PCR technique was applied. The detected sequence of the internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal RNA gene had 99.7% in homology with Ajellomyces capsulatus (the teleomorph of Histoplasma capsulatum). Clinical manifestations, historical background of equine epizootic lymphangitis in Japan, and a human autochthonous case of histoplasmosis farciminosi indicated that this dog might have been infected with H. capsulatum var. farciminosum as a heteroecism.  相似文献

Foliage clumping structure is important for forest ecological functions but has not yet been quantitatively analyzed. We examined how foliage clustering within crowns of Cryptomeria japonica changed with age. We sampled 10 trees from four monospecific stands with different ages from 20- to 88-years-old, and measured foliage mass density in cubic cells. Three indices of foliage clumpiness—coefficient of variance, Moran's I for aggregation of foliage density, and cluster fragmentation—correlated with the proportion of foliage gaps. As trees aged, foliage distributed more heterogeneously and clusters fragmented. Clumping in old crowns improves light interception under direct light conditions.  相似文献

Growth characteristics [stem diameter (D), tree height (H), and bole volume (V)], stress-wave velocity (SWV), and Pilodyn penetration (P) were measured for 21 seed provenances of 24-year-old teak trees planted in Indonesia to characterize variation in tree growth characteristics, SWV, and P among seed provenances. Broad-sense heritability and correlations between the measured characteristics were also determined. Significant differences for all measured characteristics were observed among provenances, indicating that these characteristics are genetically controlled. Broad-sense heritabilities of growth characteristics, SWV, and P are moderate values. These results indicate potential for improving growth characteristics and wood properties of teak trees with the help of breeding programs. Highly significant positive correlations were observed among the growth characteristics, suggesting that they are closely related. In contrast, no significant correlations were observed between the growth characteristics and SWV, indicating that they are independent. We conclude that mechanical properties are also important criteria for selecting plus trees in tree breeding programs. Principal component analysis revealed that seed provenances from Indonesia (Bangilan, Deling, and Randublatung) and India (Malabar and Central Province) have high scores of growth characteristics and SWV.  相似文献

Phenolic extractives in the trunk of Toxicodendron vernicifluum (syn. Rhus verniciflua) were investigated. Seventeen compounds, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, (?)-fisetinidol-4β-ol, (?)-fisetinidol-4α-ol, 2-benzyl-2,6,3′,4′-tetrahydroxycoumaran-3-one, (?)-fustin, 1,2,3,6-Tetra-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose, (?)-epifustin, (+)-taxifolin, 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose, (?)-garbanzol, (?)-fustin-3-O-gallate, (?)-epifustin-3-O-gallate, fisetin, sulfuretin, quercetin and butein, were identified from the heartwood extractives. It was found that only (+)-taxifolin which had 5,7-dihydroxy A-ring possessed a 3R configuration although other flavonoids which had 7-hydroxy A-ring possessed a 3S configuration. Quantitative analysis revealed that the total phenolic contents were much higher in the heartwood (5–7 wt%) than in the sapwood and bark (1–2 wt%), and (?)-fustin was the most abundant extractive in the heartwood (1.4–2.4 wt%). For the radial distribution of phenolic extractives, it was generally found that their content was lowest in the sapwood, increased to the highest in the outer heartwood, and then decreased in the inner heartwood.  相似文献

Summary A Japanese leading cultivar ‘Konafubuki’ has an extreme resistance gene Ry chc to Potato virus Y (PVY) in a simplex fashion. To reduce complexity of the highly heterozygous autotetraploid genome and map the Ry chc gene, haploid plants were parthenogenetically induced from ‘Konafubuki’. The ratio of 7 resistant: 5 susceptible haploids confirmed the single dominant, simplex genotype of ‘Konafubuki’. A selected resistant haploid 98H20-5 was crossed with a susceptible diploid, resulting in 119 F 1 plants. Using RFLP and RAPD markers, Ry chc was mapped to the most distal end of the chromosome 9 where the recovery of recombinant genotypes was extremely reduced in this mapping population possibly due to the linked inferiority factor. The location of Ry chc is different from those of the other extreme resistance genes to PVY, but possibly resides in one of resistance gene clusters.  相似文献

Abnormal flounder coloration frequently occurs in flounder hatcheries and diminishes the commercial value of the fish. To understand hypermelanosis, the progression of staining-type hypermelanosis in normally metamorphosed juveniles and ocular-side pigmentation in pseudoalbino juveniles were examined in the Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Sixty-five days post hatching, juveniles (total length, 6 cm) were individually identified by color-marker implantation, and the darkened area of the body surface was examined for 10 weeks by image analysis of digital photographs of the fish taken from above or below the transparent tank. Staining was observed to mainly begin at the upper and lower bases of the tail fin, expanded anteriorly along the peripheral part of the trunk, and ceased after 2 months. The individuals in which staining occurred earlier expressed severe staining and small body size by the end of the experiment. Further, pigmentation of the ocular side in pseudoalbino juveniles ceased after 2 months, but the order of pigmentation was different from that on the blind side. In this case, darkening began from the posterior, but expanded from the center to the periphery of the trunk. Even at the end of the experiment, ctenoid scales were exclusively found within the darkened area, together with cycloid scales.  相似文献

Wheat starch granules were separated from waxy wheat flour by the acetic acid (pH 3.5) fractionation technique. Waxy wheat starch samples were stained red‐brown using KI/I2 solution. Subsequently, the concentration of the KI/I2 solution was increased to >2.5% KI and 1.0% I2. Then the appearance of the waxy wheat starch granules quickly became ghostlike. The internal structure of the ghost could be observed. This structure consisted of two parts with different colors: a red‐brown central part and a slightly pinkish surrounding part. Sonication of the ghost at 20 kHz for 20 sec separated the central part from the surrounding part. Each of the separated parts were subjected to gel‐filtration chromatography, and their chromatography profiles indicated only amylopectin and no amylose. The central and surrounding parts had molecular weights of 54.3 × 105 and 23.8 × 106 from Berry plots, respectively.  相似文献
