The effects of fumigation with sodium methyl dithiocarbamate (metam sodium) on the microbial community structure and function in 2 soils were investigated using a variety of techniques. In both soils ca. 50% and 90% of the populations of total and culturable bacteria, respectively, were killed by fumigation, with recovery to levels prevailing in control soils 26 d after cessation of fumigation. The size of the ammonium and nitrite oxidiser populations was reduced by up to 4 orders of magnitude by fumigation, with the latter showing a slight recovery 105 d later. There were substantial changes in the C-utilisation (Biolog GN) profiles in the fumigated soils even 105 d later. The number and pattern of amplified 16S ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) fragments was changed by fumigation, and there was a shift in the %G+C profile toward a greater proportion of lower %G+C classes in treated soils. It appeared that DNA released from killed cells remained for some time after fumigation, and masked the apparent community DNA profiles. This study demonstrates that the effects of fumigation on the soil microbial community structure and function were pronounced and for some parameters very persistent. However, the effects on broad-scale properties such as total or culturable bacterial numbers were less enduring.  相似文献

What makes man human is his brain. This brain is obviously different from those of nonhuman primates. It is larger, shows hemispheric dominance and specialization, and is cytoarchitecturally somewhat more generalized. But are these the essential characteristics that determine the humanness of man? This paper cannot give an answer to this question for the answer is not known. But the problem can be stated more specifically, alternatives spelled out on the basis of available research results, and directions given for further inquiry. My theme will be that the human brain is so constructed that man, and only man, feels the thrust to make meaningful all his experiences and encounters. Development of this theme demands an analysis of the brain mechanisms that make meaning–and an attempt to define biologically the process of meaning. In this pursuit of meaning a fascinating variety of topics comes into focus: the coding and recoding operations of the brain; how it engenders and processes information and redundancy; and, how it makes possible signs and symbols and prepositional utterances. Of these, current research results indicate that only in the making of propositions is man unique–so here perhaps are to be found the keynotes that compose the theme.  相似文献

Purpose

Many Mediterranean drylands are characterized by strong erosion in headwater catchments, where connectivity processes play an important role in the redistribution of water and sediments. Sediment connectivity describes the ease with which sediment can move through a catchment. The spatial and temporal characterization of connectivity patterns in a catchment enables the estimation of sediment contribution and transfer paths. Apart from topography, vegetation cover is one of the main factors driving sediment connectivity. This is particularly true for the patchy vegetation cover typical of many dryland environments. Several connectivity measures have been developed in the last few years. At the same time, advances in remote sensing have enabled an improved catchment-wide estimation of ground cover at the subpixel level using hyperspectral imagery.

Materials and methods

The objective of this study was to assess the sediment connectivity for two adjacent subcatchments (~70 km2) of the Isábena River in the Spanish Pyrenees in contrasting seasons using a quantitative connectivity index based on fractional vegetation cover and topography data. The fractional cover of green vegetation, non-photosynthetic vegetation, bare soil and rock were derived by applying a multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis approach to the hyperspectral image data. Sediment connectivity was mapped using the index of connectivity, in which the effect of land cover on runoff and sediment fluxes is expressed by a spatially distributed weighting factor. In this study, the cover and management factor (C factor) of the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used as a weighting factor. Bi-temporal C factor maps were derived by linking the spatially explicit fractional ground cover and vegetation height obtained from the airborne data to the variables of the RUSLE subfactors.

Results and discussion

The resulting connectivity maps show that areas behave very differently with regard to connectivity, depending on the land cover and on the spatial distribution of vegetation abundances and topographic barriers. Most parts of the catchment show higher connectivity values in August as compared to April. The two subcatchments show a slightly different connectivity behaviour that reflects the different land cover proportions and their spatial configuration.

Conclusions

The connectivity estimation can support a better understanding of processes controlling the redistribution of water and sediments from the hillslopes to the channel network at a scale appropriate for land management. It allows hot spot areas of erosion to be identified and the effects of erosion control measures, as well as different land management scenarios, to be studied.  相似文献

Factor analysis of the data from experiment one with fertilization of ‘Spartan’ apples using various levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and their interactions showed significances between ethylene and potassium, soluble solids and potassium, acidity and phosphorus, ethylene and phosphorus, and between ethylene and nitrogen. Factor analysis of data from experiment two with twenty apple cultivars showed that maturation time and ethylene were positively associated, whereas ethylene was inversely related to acidity that is reduced during the apple fruit maturation, and soluble solids are produced during apple fruit maturation. The effects of potassium on ethylene could be through promotion of enzyme activation, promotion of protein synthesis and increased solute transport in the xylem and phloem. Production of ethylene through soluble solids could be due to increased synthesis of the amino acid cysteine that is precursor of ethylene that may be extended to synthesis of other amino acids. The decreasing concentration of malic acid during fruit maturation may be due to increasing rates of several enzymes involved in the citric acid and glyoxylate cycles that are delivering precursors to synthesis of amino acids and porphyrins. The significant relationships between soluble solids and potassium and between acidity and phosphorus may increase the synthesis of nucleic acids and improve energy supply through adenosine phosphates. The significance between ethylene and nitrogen may also increase synthesis of amino acids, proteins and enzymes. On this basis it may be concluded that the three major minerals nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are very important for apple fruit maturation because they may be involved in several biochemical processes.  相似文献

Substantial progress was made in the last decade in understanding the diversity in Dioscorea species. However, most of the studies so far concentrated in the ‘yam belt in Africa’. We present a genetic diversity and structure analysis among commercial and local varieties of water yam (Dioscorea alata L.) in Brazil using microsatellite and morphological markers. Twelve microsatellite primers were used to generate DNA profiles of 72 local varieties and 17 commercial accessions of water yam collected in four different regions in Brazil. Also, four morphological traits were evaluated on individual plants under field conditions. The morphological characterization showed considerable diversity. High polymorphism was found with 100 % polymorphism observed for 11 primers and a discriminating power value of 0.92, on average. We did not observe a strong population structure among sampling regions, while most of the genetic diversity was concentrated within regions (95.9 %). Analysis of the relationship between accessions did not clearly separate the local and commercial genotypes. However, the molecular analyses of D. alata showed high intraspecific diversity in local accessions from different regions in Brazil, with the highest Shannon index value (H′ = 0.41) for the Southeast region. These results confirmed an admixture of accessions in all sampling regions, consistent with the lack of a significant correlation between geographic and genetic distances, suggesting that farmers exchanged water yam materials extensively. The genetic diversity can be explained by the result of a continuous exchange of accessions by farmers throughout Brazil.  相似文献
