Purpose

Windthrows and fires are major natural disturbances in forest ecosystems, which can affect organic matter in the surface and the mineral layer of forest soil. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the changes occurring in the structure and properties of humic acid (HA) in the lands where windthrows and wildfires occurred.

Materials and methods

In November 2004, the forest in the area of 12,000 ha in the Tatra National Park, Slovakia, was seriously damaged by northern wind gusts exceeding 200 km/h. In July 2005, a wildfire broke out in a 220 ha of wind-damaged area. The HAs have been isolated from four research plots: (a) the area where the fallen trees were removed (EXT); (b) an area after windstorm covered by wood from struck trees (NEX), left for spontaneous succession; (c) an area after extracted timber, damaged by the surface wildfire (FIR); and (d) a reference intact spruce forest area (REF). Changes in the chemical structure of the HAs isolated from the research plots were determined on the basis of elemental analysis and UV-Vis, EPR, IR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Results and discussion

All used analytical methods showed a decrease in the humification degree of the humic acids extracted from the soils where the spruce forest has been affected by a wildfire and a windthrow. In the case of the control sample HA (REF), the calculated atomic H/C and O/C ratios and the degree of aromaticity (α) calculated from the 13C NMR spectra were higher, indicating higher aromaticity of HA from the REF area. The more complex and developed structure of REF HA was confirmed by the higher value of E1%6 and the lower E4/E6 ratio obtained using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Also, the higher g-parameters determined from the EPR spectra of the stable radicals present in HA confirmed the lower aromaticity on the plots that have been subjected to the calamities. The 13C NMR spectra and the elemental analysis show that the structure of the HA extracted from the NEX plot is the closest to the REF.

Conclusions

The results of the systematic research showed significant changes in the structure of HA taken from spruce forest soils that were subjected to windstorms and fires. An enrichment of the HAs in aliphatic carbon and so a lower humification degree of the organic matter in the areas calamity-affected were observed. The results clearly indicate that the HAs extracted from the disturbed plots of the spruce forest are not as stable as those extracted taken from the control plot.

Purpose

Crop straws and animal manure have the potential to ameliorate acidic soils, but their effectiveness and the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two crop (maize and soybean) straws, swine manure, and their application rates on acidity changes in acidic red soils (Ferralic Cambisol) differing in initial pH.

Materials and methods

Two red soils were collected after 21 years of the (1) no fertilization history (CK soil, pH 5.46) and (2) receiving annual chemical nitrogen (N) fertilization (N soil, pH 4.18). The soils were incubated for 105 days at 25 °C after amending the crop straws or manure at 0, 5, 10, 20, and 40 g kg?1 (w/w), and examined for changes in pH, exchangeable acidity, N mineralization, and speciation in 2 M KCl extract as ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate plus nitrite (NO3??+?NO2?).

Results and discussion

All three organic materials significantly decreased soil acidity (dominated by aluminum) as the application rate increased. Soybean straw was as effective (sometimes more effective) as swine manure in raising pH in both soils. Soybean straw and swine manure both significantly reduced exchangeable acidity at amendment rate as low as 10 g kg?1 in the highly acidic N soil, but swine manure was more effective in reducing the total acidity especially exchangeable aluminum (e.g., in the N soil from initial 5.79 to 0.50 cmol(+) kg?1 compared to 2.82 and 4.19 cmol(+) kg?1 by soybean straw and maize straw, respectively). Maize straw was less effective than soybean straw in affecting soil pH and the acidity. The exchangeable aluminum decreased at a rate of 4.48 cmol(+) kg?1 per pH unit increase for both straws compared to 6.25 cmol(+) kg?1 per pH unit from the manure. The NO3??+?NO2? concentration in soil increased significantly for swine manure amendment, but decreased markedly for straw treatments. The high C/N ratio in the straws led to N immobilization and pH increase.

Conclusions

While swine manure continues to be effective for ameliorating soil acidity, crop straw amendment has also shown a good potential to ameliorate the acidity of the red soil. Thus, after harvest, straws should preferably not be removed from the field, but mixed with the soil to decelerate acidification. The long-term effect of straw return on soil acidity management warrants further determination under field conditions.

Purpose

Grasslands play a crucial role in offsetting greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. A moderate change in grassland carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stocks may substantially alter the global C and N cycle and thereby influence climate. But how grassland C and N stocks respond to grazing and slope position remains uncertain. This research investigates how C and N stocks respond to cattle grazing along a landscape slope.

Materials and methods

We studied a grassland that has been grazed by cattle at four cattle stocking rates (0, 1.2, 2.4, and 4.8 animal unit months (AUM) ha?1) since 1949, representing control (CK), light (L), heavy (H), and very heavy (VH) grazing intensities, respectively. Samples were taken from the top and bottom slope positions within each paddock (only the top position in CK); C and N stocks in soil, roots, litter, and standing crop were estimated. Soil C and N stocks were estimated based on equivalent mass (1500 Mg ha?1). Root C and N stocks were estimated to the depth of 15 cm.

Results and discussion

All parameters, except for litter N stock and standing crop C stock, significantly responded to the interaction of grazing intensity and slope position. In the bottom position, soil and standing crop C and N stocks as well as litter C stock were higher with the L treatment than with VH, while no significant differences were found among the three grazed treatments for root C and litter N stocks. In the top position, soil and root C and N stocks were higher with the VH treatment than with L, whereas litter C and N stocks and standing crop C stock were lower with VH than with L.

Conclusions

Our results provide evidence that slope position plays an important role in regulating the response of C and N stocks to grazing and may need to be considered when developing optimal grazing management strategies.

Motivated by the need to produce small area estimates for the National Resources Inventory survey, we develop a spatial hierarchical model based on the generalized Dirichlet distribution to construct small area estimators of compositional proportions in several mutually exclusive and exhaustive landcover categories. At the observation level, the standard design-based estimators of the proportions are assumed to follow the generalized Dirichlet distribution. After proper transformation of the design-based estimators, beta regression is applicable. We consider a logit mixed model for the expectation of the beta distribution, which incorporates covariates through fixed effects and spatial effect through a conditionally autoregressive process. In a design-based evaluation study, the proposed model-based estimators are shown to have smaller root-mean-square error and relative root-mean-square error than design-based estimators and multinomial model-based estimators. Pyrus L. is a taxonomically difficult genus mainly because of interspecific and intergeneric hybridization. A majority of the wild species of Pyrus occurs in Iran, making this region very important for any study of the systematics of the genus. In this investigation, seven quantitative and seven qualitative characters of leaf epidermis, particularly epidermal cells shape, anticlinal walls patterns, type and size of stomata, and cuticular ornamentation of 22 taxa of Pyrus plus Malus orientalis are studied for assessment of their taxonomical value at different levels. Scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy were used for evaluation of epidermis features of these taxa. Some characters such as shape and anticlinal wall pattern of epidermal cells, presence of adaxial stomata, pattern of cuticular ornamentation and epicuticular wax types are useful in separation of some Pyrus taxa. Moreover, Malus orientalis is recognized easily from all Pyrus species via the density of stomata. According to ANOVA analysis, all quantitative variables show high level of between-group differentiation. Also, based on the hierarchical clustering results gained by multiple correspondence analysis and factor analysis of mixed data analyses of the current study, micromorphological characters of epidermal cells reflect the ecological conditions of pear taxa, so most of the mesophyte and xerophyte taxa can be separated from each other in accordance with epidermal cells characters, specially the anticlinal wall pattern. Totally, the application of some other biological markers, particularly suitable molecular data are needed to present well-resolved relationships among these taxa.  相似文献

Assessment of genetic variability in the available germplasm is the prerequisite for development of improved genotypes through planned breeding programmes. In view of this, 39 “hatkora” (Citrus macroptera Mont.) genotypes collected from different locations of Mizoram, India were evaluated for physico-chemical characteristics during 2013–2015. The study reveals that there was significant variation among the collections in these particular traits. Individual fruit weight ranged from 277.78 to 617.69 g; fruit diameter 9.32–12.52 cm; fruit length 7.74–10.19 cm, fruit volume 238.33–583.33 cc; pulp weight 153.75–320.94 g; pulp:peel ratio 1.50–3.24 and seed number 9.33–23.6. Similarly, the chemical parameters also varied significantly among different germplasms. The juice content varied from 13.45 to 32.53 %, ascorbic acid 34.81–73.64 mg/100 mL, TSS 6.15–9.10 %, acidity 5.03–8.75 %, total sugars 5.16–7.97 % and sugar:acid ratio 0.75–1.52. From the analysis of genetic parameters, it could be concluded that characters like fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit volume, pulp weight, pulp–peel ratio, juice, Total soluble solids (TSS), acidity, ascorbic acid, total sugars, and sugar–acid ratio could be used as selection criteria for development of effective and productive plant types in “hatkora”. Wide range of variation in physico-chemical parameters of “hatkora” fruits indicated the great scope of individual plant selection based on these characters for future genetic improvement programme.  相似文献

Morphological traits and two kinds of molecular markers were employed to study the genetic relationships among improved rice (Oryza sativa ) varieties of Indonesia since 1943. Dendrograms based on morphological traits and both molecular markers (simple sequence repeats, SSR and single nucleotide polymorphism, SNP) agreed in separating the varieties into two primary groups. Based on the morphological traits, a larger group (>60 %) contains varieties with smaller sizes compared with those in the smaller group (<40 %). SSR and SNP markers revealed that most of the varieties belonged to indica (88; 89 %) and japonica (9; 8 %) subspecies, and 3 % of varieties were not involved in two subspecies. The molecular markers revealed that the genetic diversity (H) stagnated between stage II (1967–1985) and stage III (1986–2003). However, during stage I (1943–1966), H was higher than in the other stages as revealed by SNP markers, while H in stage I was lower than in the other stages as revealed by SSR markers. In this study, the two molecular data sets were positively correlated and positive correlations between the phenotypic and molecular data depended on the kind of molecular marker: SNP had higher Mantel r values than SSRs. Besides, SSR markers seem to be appropriate for pedigree studies, while SNP markers could be used to reveal genomic relationships. These findings were attributable to the different properties of these two different markers. These results suggested that the diversity and differentiation of both the phenotypic and molecular marker variations were probably resulted from the crossing and selection in rice breeding in Indonesia. We suggest that Indonesia needs another strategy to improve new varieties to avoid a reduction in genetic diversity and similarity.  相似文献

The center of origin of maize is in Mexico and maize diversity is very high in many parts of the country. Here we describe and analyze the geographic distribution and diversity of maize using a database of 18,176 georeferenced observations of maize races. The number of observations by race follows the common “hollow curve” distribution, with six races comprising 54 % of the records and 37 races only 10 %. Few races are widespread, and some have a highly localized distribution. The average maximum distance (D max) between two records of the same race was 1169 km, but seven races had a D max lower than 200 km. The average circular area range size (CA25) was 51, but 14 races had a CA25 lower than 10. Some races have very few observations but were found over a large area. These races may not be valid and their classification should be reviewed. Areas of high race richness and diversity are in mountainous northwest, south central, and southern Mexico in the states of Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoacán and Chiapas. Six contiguous maize regions were defined using hierarchical clustering. Despite the high sample size, further sampling could improve estimates of race diversity in several regions.  相似文献

Musa L. commonly known as the banana group is one of the most important and oldest food crops of humankind. Among the wild relatives with ornamental interest in the genus, Musa ornata Roxb. shows a disjunct distribution between Asia and North America (Mexico). The wild occurrence of this species in Mexico has led to speculation about the evolutionary relationships with its Asian relatives. This study examined the phylogenetic relationships between intercontinental specimens of this species and, based on registered evidence, explored the more likely hypothesis about the origins of its distribution. The phylogeny of intercontinental specimens, along with other representatives of the same genus, was carried out using three molecular markers (ITS, trnL-F, and atpB-rbcL) and applying three phylogenetic reconstruction methods: maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. The genetic analysis of the combined dataset grouped together all the Mexican and most Asian specimens, but the monophyly of the species was not supported. The relationships suggest that Mexican populations may have originated from an Asian invasion. However, several studies and historical documents suggest the presence of Musa in America long before the arrival of Europeans. Based on its current distribution, phylogenetic evidence, and fossil record, this species’ disjunct distribution could be explained in terms of an ancestral distribution range that encompassed America and Asia, followed by its subsequent restriction to the Old World and a secondary dispersal by humans. However, further studies are necessary to shed more light on the origins of this disjunct distribution.  相似文献
