The ethanol extracts obtained from both leaf and seed in the Thorn apple (Datura stramonium L.) (Solanaceae) were investigated for acaricidal, repellent and oviposition deterrent properties against adult two-spotted
spider mites (Tetranychus urticae Koch) (Acari: Tetranychidae) under laboratory conditions. Leaf and seed extracts, which were applied in 167,250 and 145,750 mg/l
concentrations, respectively (using a Petri leaf disc-spray tower method), caused 98 and 25% mortality among spider mite adults
after 48 h. The simple logistic regression analysis showed that the independent variable, an increase in the dose of leaf
extract was associated with a significant increase in the death rate of T. urticae females, but an increase in the dosage of seed extracts did not have a significant effect. Using probit analysis and estimating
the parameters with a confidence limit of 95%, we determined the LC50 values of leaf extract to be 70,593 mg/l. According to Pearson’s χ2 test, mites showed the strongest run off to bean leaf surfaces sprayed with both leaf and seed extracts (in sub-lethal doses:
<7,500 mg/l and <25,000 mg/l, respectively) and moved towards surfaces that had not been sprayed with extracts. Furthermore,
repeated measures ANOVA indicated a significant difference between the number of eggs laid on unsprayed bean leaves compared
to bean leaves that were sprayed with leaf and seed extracts at sub-lethal doses, 2,500 and 25,000 mg/l concentrations, respectively.
These results suggest that D. stramonium extracts could be used to manage the two-spotted spider mite. 相似文献

Research on natural regeneration is crucial for the development of sustainable forestry practices, in light of the global
climate changes taking place. In this study, 151 plots were sampled in six Pinus pinaster stands that were naturally regenerated by the seed-tree method in Mediterranean forests in central Spain. The objectives
of the survey were to study the suitability of different forest stands designated for natural regeneration as well as to analyse
seedling establishment and the relationship between regeneration and different site factors. Analysis of variance and multivariate
analysis with canonical ordination techniques were employed. Full and partial redundancy analyses on a correlation matrix
were used to carry out a direct gradient analysis of regeneration density as a function of site factors. Nearly all stands
presented seedling densities over 2,000 seedlings ha−1 and were thus found to be suitable for natural regeneration of Pinus pinaster by the seed-tree selection method. Significant variables that best explained total seedling and viable seedling density were
spring and autumn precipitation of the year prior to establishment, spring and summer precipitation of the year of establishment
and percentage cover of litter. There were no signs of competition between shrubs and seedlings, but a negative significant
correlation with grass cover was observed. Pinus pinaster natural regeneration was successful with the seed-tree method, although it appeared to be highly dependent on climate and

A progressive part of protected area management program in Lao PDR is a land and forest allocation program which contains critical elements that delegate right of land and forest use to local people. This study analyzes the gap between the original intent of the program and its actual implementation by local officials in Phou Xang He protected area, and discusses policy issues that need to be addressed. It appears that several types of non-compliance with regulations by local people have occurred, with local officials tacitly ignoring infractions. By switching viewpoints, however, it appears that the local officials permit these infractions as a way of allowing local people to secure their livelihoods. As constraints on the realities of land and forest use vary widely in and around villages in different locales, there is a need for government to allow local officials flexibility in implementing policies. 相似文献

The effects of profit and land value tax on harvesting decisions of nonindustrial private forest owners are investigated.
We use a model of a utility-maximizing forest owner with amenity preferences for timber, which extends the basic two-period
harvesting model to include both thinning and clear-cutting harvests. It is demonstrated that with no amenity preference,
the profit and land value taxes are neutral to clear-cutting and thinning decisions. Under small to medium amenity preferences,
the profit tax decreases the optimal clear-cutting volumes. However, the effect on thinning may be positive or negative, depending
on the amenity preference level. The total effect of the profit tax on the short-run timber supply is negative. The effects
of the land value tax contrast with those of the profit tax. Also, a tax regime with a lowered profit tax rate combined with
a land value tax is analysed. It is shown to be able to bring Pareto-improvement to a regime that uses a higher profit tax

Whole-stand models normally require data on initial stand basal area and dominant height. Dominant height measurements are time-consuming and often imprecise, compromising subsequent predictions. Poplar plantations provide a special case where basal area correlates with site index; a whole-stand model could thus be based on stand basal area. We report a static model constructed by the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) for poplar plantations for three different hybrid poplars (Populus × euramericana (Dode) Guinier “I-214”, “MC”, and “Luisa Avanzo”) in northeast Spain. The transition function was based on current stand basal area and was fitted with data from 158 permanent plots ranging from 1- to 17-year-old plantations. Merchantable stand volume was estimated by a volume equation where height was predicted by a height–basal area relationship based on 458 temporary plots. The model differences between clones were compared using the nonlinear extra sum of squares method. Significant differences were detected, while Luisa Avanzo presented the highest merchantable volume at the end of the rotation. Errors in basal area predictions were below 20% within 6 years in the case of Luisa Avanzo and MC clones, and within 3 years in the case of I-214. Our research showed that satisfactory predictions can be obtained using GADA with a single transition function based on an easily measurable variable such as stand basal area. 相似文献

Afforestation of agricultural land is increasingly used to deliver environmental benefits, but their effects on biodiversity remain poorly understood. This paper tests the hypothesis that afforestation changes predation processes in surrounding farmland, examining how the characteristics and landscape context of forest plantations affect predator (birds and mammalian carnivores) and key prey (rabbits and hares) abundances, and bird nest predation rates in Iberian cereal-steppes. Lagomorphs and predators were surveyed in fallow fields around 50 forest plantations, where predation rates were estimated using artificial nests set at 0, 100, 200 and 300 m from the forest edge. Recent plantations structurally similar to sparse (oak) or dense (pine) shrublands were associated with the highest hare and rabbit abundances, respectively, whereas both species avoided landscapes with high eucalyptus cover. In contrast, mature eucalyptus plantations showed strong positive effects on typical nest predators such as corvids and carnivores. Open farmland fragmentation favoured the abundance of lagomorphs and carnivores. Despite these effects and the high predation rate on artificial nests (49%), there was neither evidence for increased predation near plantation edges nor higher predation in fields with more lagomorphs and predators. However, predation tended to increase with cover by young oak plantations and overall forest plantation cover, to decrease with eucalyptus cover at both the local and landscape scales, and to peak in landscapes with intermediate edge densities. These results suggest that afforestation may have strong effects on bird nest predation rates by changing landscape composition and configuration, rather than by inducing local increases in predator and prey populations. Nevertheless, increased abundances of generalist predators associated with forest plantations may still be considered of conservation concern, thus supporting the recommendation for strongly restricting afforestation in areas important for open grassland birds. Where this is unavoidable, monitoring should be undertaken to provide early signals for bird population declines associated with predator increases, eventually triggering conservation action such as predator exclusion or removal. 相似文献

Mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) seedlings inoculated with black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) were grown under nursery conditions and subjected to drought hardening for 4 months in autumn and winter followed by irrigation
for 10 days. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance were monitored during the 4 months of drought. When the test was
completed (March), measurements were made for each treatment (inoculated or non-inoculated), and watering regime (watered
and water-stressed). Pressure–volume curves, osmotic potential at full turgor, osmotic potential at zero turgor and the tissue
modulus of elasticity near full turgor were calculated. Mycorrhizal colonization and growth, and the content of the main mineral
nutrients N, P, K, Ca and Mg were measured. Water stress affected plant growth, caused an elastic adjustment of the plant
tissues, and decreased the P and K content, and inoculation improved the nitrogen content. Drought acclimation apparently
achieved the goal of improving the drought tolerance of holm oak seedlings, without depressing ectomycorrhizal root colonization
by T. melanosporum.

A dramatic decline in forest cover in eastern Africa along with a growing population means that timber and poles for building
and fuelwood are in short supply. To overcome this shortage, the region is increasingly turning to eucalyptus. But eucalyptus
raises environmental concerns of its own. Fears that it will deplete water supply, affect wildlife and reduce associated crop
yields have caused many countries in the region to discourage farmers from planting this exotic. This paper is part of a series
of investigations on the growth and water use efficiency of faster growing eucalyptus hybrids, which was introduced from South
Africa to Kenya. The hypothesis is that the new hybrids are more efficient in using water and more suitable for the semi-arid
tropics than existing eucalyptus and two popular agroforestry species. Gas exchange characteristics of juvenile Eucalyptus grandis (W. Hill ex Maiden), two eucalyptus hybrids (E. grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.), Grevillea robusta (A. Cunn) and Cordia africana (Lam) was studied under field and pot conditions using an infrared gas analyzer was used to measure photosynthetic active
radiation (PAR), net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (g
s) and transpiration rate (E) at CO2 concentrations of 360 μmol mol−1 and ambient humidity and temperature. A, E and g
s varied between species, being highest in eucalyptus hybrid GC 15 (24.6 μmol m−2 s−1) compared to eucalyptus hybrid GC 584 (21.0 μmol m−2 s−1), E. grandis (19.2 μmol m−2 s−1), C. africana (17.7 μmol m−2 s−1) and G. robusta (11.1 μmol m−2 s−1). C. africana exhibited high E values (7.0 mmol m−2 s−1) at optimal soil moisture contents than G. robusta (3.9 mmol m−2 s−1) and eucalyptus (5.3 mmol m−2 s−1) in field experiment and G. robusta (3.2 mmol m−2 s−1) and eucalyptus (4.2 mmol m−2 s−1) in pot-grown trees. At very low soil moisture content, extremely small g
s values were recorded in GC 15 and E. grandis (8 mmol m−2 s−1) and G. robusta (14 mmol m−2 s−1) compared to GC 584 (46.9 mmol m−2 s−1) and C. africana (90.0 mmol m−2 s−1) indicating strong stomatal control by the species. Many expert-designed agroforestry projects enunciated in 1970s around the world, particularly in the developing countries,
had uneven success due to inadequate adoption or abandonment after adoption. There are many empirical studies on factors affecting
on-farm tree cultivation mainly where expert-designed agroforestry programmes were introduced but lacking in case of traditional
agroforestry. Moreover, the concern to identify key factors influencing on-farm tree growing is gaining importance. The present
study identifies key factors in on-farm tree growing based on investigation of traditional agroforestry using logistic regression
approach. The study is based on household survey of 401 households located in Indian Western Himalaya. The factors affecting
on-farm tree growing were grouped into: biophysical (included land use and infrastructural aspects) and social. Models predicting
on-farm tree growing for each category were developed and key factors affecting on-farm tree growing in the respective category
were identified. A composite model was also developed by combining biophysical and social factors. In the present study, farm
size, agroclimatic zone, soil fertility, mobility and importance of tree for future generations respectively were the key
factors which influenced tree growing. In contrast to many previous studies which considered either biophysical or social
factors, the composite model in the present study reveals that both biophysical and social factors are simultaneously important
in motivating the farmers to grow trees on their farms in traditional agroforestry. Moreover, the present study open vistas
for using farmers’ experience and knowledge of adoption of agroforestry to stimulate on-farm tree growing. The wider implication
of the study is that biophysical as well as social variables should be considered together in designing suitable agroforestry

A scarcity of cultivation land calls for more intensive and productive land use in the East Usambara Mountains in NE Tanzania.
Spice crops could generate cash in higher parts of the mountains, but the present cultivation methods are depleting the valuable
forest resources. The trial was established at the end of 2000 to find out how the two popular cash crops, cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton.) and black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), normally grown under the natural forest, will produce in intensive agroforestry system with two multipurpose farm trees,
Grevillea robusta A.Cunn. and nitrogen fixing Gliricidia sepium Jacq. Results from 6 years showed that cardamom produced better with grevillea than in natural forest; 5.5 times more in
the fourth year than the average in the area. The Land Equivalent Ratios for black pepper and cardamom showed that pepper
intercropped with grevillea produced 3.9 times more than in monoculture whereas cardamom intercropped with grevillea and pepper
produced 2.3 times more than in monoculture. Gliricidia improved the nitrogen and organic matter content of the soil over
the levels found in natural forest. Soil acidity was, however, preventing the plants from using the available mineral nutrients
