Recovery from caudal artery cannulation with and without pre-anaesthesia metomidate sedation was assessed in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). The levels of plasma cortisol, glucose, electrolytes and acid–base parameters were compared between sedated and unsedated cod and to those in uncannulated individuals, where the samples were obtained by sacrificial sampling (reference level). Metomidate sedation delayed the stress response, causing sedated cod plasma cortisol to return to the reference level more slowly [day 4 post surgery (PS)] than in unsedated cod (day 2 PS). Plasma glucose was elevated in both sedated and unsedated cod up to and including day 5 PS. Plasma K+ was lower and pH was higher in cannulated cod than in the reference from 24 h PS until the end of experimentation, indicating a stress effect of sacrificial sampling on plasma K+ and pH that was likely caused by an acute stress response. Metomidate sedation delayed the stress response following CA cannulation and should therefore not be used as a pre-anaesthetic sedation in Atlantic cod. The caudal artery cannulation can be a useful tool in obtaining repeated blood samples from Atlantic cod given an adequate recovery time, which was determined to be 6 days irrespective of pre-anaesthesia sedation status.  相似文献

Behaviour represents a reaction to the environment as fish perceive it and is therefore a key element of fish welfare. This review summarises the main findings on how behavioural changes have been used to assess welfare in farmed fish, using both functional and feeling-based approaches. Changes in foraging behaviour, ventilatory activity, aggression, individual and group swimming behaviour, stereotypic and abnormal behaviour have been linked with acute and chronic stressors in aquaculture and can therefore be regarded as likely indicators of poor welfare. On the contrary, measurements of exploratory behaviour, feed anticipatory activity and reward-related operant behaviour are beginning to be considered as indicators of positive emotions and welfare in fish. Despite the lack of scientific agreement about the existence of sentience in fish, the possibility that they are capable of both positive and negative emotions may contribute to the development of new strategies (e.g. environmental enrichment) to promote good welfare. Numerous studies that use behavioural indicators of welfare show that behavioural changes can be interpreted as either good or poor welfare depending on the fish species. It is therefore essential to understand the species-specific biology before drawing any conclusions in relation to welfare. In addition, different individuals within the same species may exhibit divergent coping strategies towards stressors, and what is tolerated by some individuals may be detrimental to others. Therefore, the assessment of welfare in a few individuals may not represent the average welfare of a group and vice versa. This underlines the need to develop on-farm, operational behavioural welfare indicators that can be easily used to assess not only the individual welfare but also the welfare of the whole group (e.g. spatial distribution). With the ongoing development of video technology and image processing, the on-farm surveillance of behaviour may in the near future represent a low-cost, noninvasive tool to assess the welfare of farmed fish.  相似文献

Historical data from oceanographic expeditions and remotely sensed data on outgoing longwave radiation, temperature, wind speed and ocean color in the western Arabian Sea (1950–2010) were used to investigate decadal trends in the physical and biochemical properties of the upper 300 m. 72 % of the 29,043 vertical profiles retrieved originated from USA and UK expeditions. Increasing outgoing longwave radiation, surface air temperatures and sea surface temperature were identified on decadal timescales. These were well correlated with decreasing wind speeds associated with a reduced Siberian High atmospheric anomaly. Shoaling of the oxycline and nitracline was observed as well as acidification of the upper 300 m. These physical and chemical changes were accompanied by declining chlorophyll-a concentrations, vertical macrofaunal habitat compression, declining sardine landings and an increase of fish kill incidents along the Omani coast.  相似文献

The ongoing global change could be an additional threat to the establishment and the long-term survival of Populus nigra L., an emblematic European riparian species. With the general aim of gaining insights into the adaptive potential of this species, we (i) quantified variations within and among three French P. nigra populations for key physiological attributes, i.e., water-use efficiency (assessed from bulk leaf carbon isotope discrimination, Δ(13)C), growth performance and related leaf traits, (ii) examined genotype and population by environment interactions, and (iii) explored the relationship between Δ(13)C and growth. Thirty genotypes were sampled in each of three naturally established populations and grown in two different sites, Orléans (ORL) and Guémené-Penfao (GMN). In ORL, two similar plots were established and different watering regimes were applied in order to test for the drought response. Significant variations were observed for all traits within and among populations irrespective of site and watering. Trait variation was larger within than among populations. The effect of drought was neither genotype- nor population-dependent, contrary to the effect of site. The population ranking was maintained in all sites and watering regimes for the two most complex traits: Δ(13)C and growth. Moreover, these two traits were unrelated, which indicates that (i) water-use efficiency and growth are largely uncoupled in this species, and (ii) the environmental factors driving genetic structuration for Δ(13)C and growth act independently. The large variations found within populations combined with the consistent differences among populations suggest a large adaptive potential for P. nigra.  相似文献

In the absence of long term solutions for the management of swine manure, the present study proposes an emergency remedial measure aimed at reducing the eutrophic load of the supernatant of swine manure when discharge in the aquatic environment is unavoidable. Phosphate removal appears to be a temporary solution to the reduction of manure fertility for the aquatic environment. The efficiency of three phosphate precipitants, namely, alum (Al2(SO4)3), lime (Ca(OH)2), and zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl4) was evaluated in 60 L experimental tanks. Alum yielded the best efficiency, both for the chemical precipitation of P and for algal growth potential reduction determined with the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum. Zirconium tetrachloride was also very active, but for a shorter period of time. Finally, lime was relatively less efficient.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Two genetic factors explain a significant proportion of the variability for quantitative resistance to Melampsora larici-populina leaf rust in a Populus deltoides x P. trichocarpa F(1) progeny. One is inherited from P. deltoides and is associated with a defeated qualitative resistance gene R(1), and the other, R(US), is inherited from P. trichocarpa. To assess the potential contribution of these two factors for durable resistance breeding, 284 genotypes from this F(1) progeny were studied in laboratory experiments with three M. larici-populina strains and in a field experiment under natural inoculum pressure. Results confirmed that both factors can have strong beneficial effects in the laboratory. These effects were strain specific, thus impairing their chances for durability. However, association of both factors led to synergistic effects in most situations. In accordance with good field-laboratory relationships, especially those involving uredinia-size laboratory measurements, field effects of both resistance factors were significant. R(US) led to a significant reduction of rust colonization on the most infected leaf in the field, and its effect was significant both in the presence and the absence of R(1). In contrast, the presence of R(1) was useful in the field only when R(US) was absent. The nature of the genetic relationship between both factors remains unknown, but benefits from their association should be quantified over a longer period to evaluate potential adaptation of the pathogen.  相似文献

The chemical investigation of the recently described Mediterranean Homoscleromorpha sponge Oscarella balibaloi revealed an original family of five closely related glucosylated sesterterpenes 1–4, named balibalosides. Their structure elucidation was mainly inferred from NMR and HRMS data analyses. Balibalosides differ by the pattern of acetyl substitutions on the three sugar residues linked to the same aglycone sesterterpenoid core. From a biosynthetic perspective, these compounds may represent intermediates in the pathways leading to more complex sesterterpenes frequently found in Dictyoceratida, a sponge Order belonging to Demospongiae, a clade which is phylogenetically distinct from the Homoscleromorpha. While steroid and triterpenoid saponins were already well known from marine sponges, balibalosides are the first examples of glycosilated sesterterpenes.  相似文献
