The conduction of water by soil is fundamental to the way in which soils transport nutrients and pollutants into groundwater. The derivation of relations between water flow and void structure has relied on the implicit assumption that water flows through aligned unconnected cylindrical capillary tubes. We describe a three‐dimensionally interconnected model of void structure, called Pore‐Cor, which simulates the intrusion of a non‐wetting fluid and drainage of a wetting fluid. The model is calibrated by fitting it to the water retention curves of a sandy soil at four depths. The experimental drainage pressures are related to the radii of the entries to the voids by the Laplace equation. The necessities of using this equation, and of employing a simplified void geometry, introduce major approximations into the modelling. Nevertheless, the model is sufficiently precise and versatile to predict trends in other properties usefully. It is illustrated in this work by a close correlation between a predicted and experimental change in saturated hydraulic conductivity with depth, and a realistic unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curve. The saturated and unsaturated hydraulic values are shown to be much more realistic than those predicted by the aligned cylinders model. In addition, the simulations by Pore‐Cor indicate that the void network within the sandy soil is acting in a structured rather than a random manner. The Pore‐Cor model is currently being used to explain the matrix‐flow characteristics of tracers and pollutants.  相似文献

 Gross rates of soil processes and microbial activity were measured in two grazed permanent pasture soils which had recently been amended with N fertilizer or dung. 15N studies of rates of soil organic matter turnover showed gross N mineralization was higher, and gross N immobilization was lower, in a long-term fertilized soil than in a soil which had never received fertilizer N. Net mineralization was also found to be higher in the fertilized soil: a consequence of the difference between the opposing N turnover processes of N mineralization and immobilization. In both soils without amendments the soil microbial biomass contents were similar, but biomass activity (specific respiration) was higher in the fertilized soil. Short-term manipulation of fertilizer N input, i.e. adding N to unfertilized soil, or witholding N from previously fertilized soil, for one growing season, did not affect gross mineralization, immobilization or biomass size and activity. Amendments of dung had little effect on gross mineralization, but there was an increase in immobilization in both soils. Total biomass also increased under dung in the unfertilized soil, but specific respiration was reduced, suggesting changes in the composition of the biomass. Dung had a direct effect on the microbial biomass by temporarily increasing available soil C. Prolonged input of fertilizer N increases soil C indirectly as a result of enhanced plant growth, the effect of which may not become evident within one seasonal cycle. Intramuscular injections of atipamezole (200 micrograms/kg), doxapram (2.5 mg/kg) and saline (0.1 ml/kg) were compared for their ability to reverse xylazine sedation in dogs. Atipamezole effectively reversed the sedative effects and partially reversed the cardiopulmonary effects of xylazine. Doxapram did not arouse the dogs as much as atipamezole, but it shortened the time taken for them to stand although the dogs were still ataxic.  相似文献

SUMMARY An ivermectin-based jetting fluid was assessed for its efficacy in the prevention of blowfly strike and treatment of lice in long-wooled sheep. The ivermectin concentrate was diluted to 0.03 mg/mL and applied via a standard hand jetting technique. In insectary studies, using laboratory-reared Lucilia cuprina, sheep jetted with ivermectin were protected from induced breech and body strikes for 18 weeks after treatment. Merino and Corriedale sheep were equally protected, as were sheep subjected to 25 mm simulated rainfall at 1, 3 or 6 hours after jetting. Naturally occurring infestations of lice, Bovicola (Damalinia) ovis, were successfully treated with ivermectin jetting fluid in Merino and Corriedale sheep using a standard hand jetting technique. In addition, the efficacy of treatment was not affected by simulated rainfall at 1, 3 or 6 hours after treatment.  相似文献

Abstract. Reductions in hydraulic conductivity and specific yield (drainable porosity) of large cores of Evesham clay soil were observed for periods up to 40 days under continuous ponding. A strong linear relationship ( r 2= 0.94) found between these two variables was used as parameter input to a layered drainage model for mole drained soils. Model results indicated that soils of lower drainable porosity and hydraulic conductivity produced higher peaked hydrographs widi faster recessions. These results are discussed in relation to the effects of soil loosening on drain response in heavy clay soils.  相似文献
