In non‐salmonid fish, Aeromonas salmonicidacan cause local infections with severe skin ulcerations, known as atypical furunculosis. In this study, we present a systemic infection by a virulent A. salmonicidain European perch (Perca fluviatilis).This infection was diagnosed in a Swiss warm water recirculation aquaculture system. The isolate of A.  salmonicida encodes a type three secretion system (TTSS) most likely located on a plasmid similar to pAsa5/pASvirA, which is known to specify one of the main virulence attributes of the species A. salmonicida. However, the genes specifying the TTSS of the perch isolate show a higher temperature tolerance than strains isolated from cold‐water fish. The function of the TTSS in virulence was verified in a cytotoxicity test using bluegill fry and epithelioma papulosum cyprinid cells.  相似文献

It is known from laboratory studies that tobacco-associated forms of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) and the closely related tobacco aphid Myzus nicotianae (Blackman) are often somewhat less susceptible to imidacloprid than non-tobacco strains of M. persicae. Choice tests (floating leaf technique) showed that tobacco aphids were also less susceptible to the antifeedant potential of imidacloprid in contact bioassays. Synergists like piperonyl butoxide or DEF did not enhance the susceptibility of tobacco-associated morphs of Myzus ssp. to imidacloprid, thus providing evidence that neither oxidative detoxication nor hydrolytic metabolization took place. However, in an attempt to study the influence of endosymbiotic bacteria on the efficacy of imidacloprid, we allowed small populations of tobacco aphids to feed on diets containing the antibiotic chlortetracycline prior to imidacloprid treatment. While the effectiveness of imidacloprid, i.e. lower LC50 values, could be improved in all strains, including the susceptible reference strain, there was no change in overall tolerance factors. In order to investigate any possible alteration of the target site, the affinity of imidacloprid and nicotine to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in whole-aphid homogenates was measured. All strains (and clones) showed the same high-affinity binding sites and no detectable difference. Studies using the FAO dip method revealed that the lower susceptibility of M. nicotianae is not restricted to chloronicotinyls like imidacloprid or acetamiprid, because other insecticides with different modes of action such as pymetrozine and fipronil were also affected in laboratory studies. It is considered that the observed tolerance to chloronicotinyls in certain strains of Myzus ssp. is a natural variation in response, probably not coupled with any known mechanism of resistance in this species complex. © 1998 SCI  相似文献

Context

Quantitative models of forest dynamics have followed a progression toward methods with increased detail, complexity, and spatial extent.

Objectives

We highlight milestones in the development of forest dynamics models and identify future research and application opportunities.

Methods

We reviewed milestones in the evolution of forest dynamics models from the 1930s to the present with emphasis on forest growth and yield models and forest landscape models We combined past trends with emerging issues to identify future needs.

Results

Historically, capacity to model forest dynamics at tree, stand, and landscape scales was constrained by available data for model calibration and validation; computing capacity; model applicability to real-world problems; and ability to integrate biological, social, and economic drivers of change. As computing and data resources improved, a new class of spatially explicit forest landscape models emerged.

Conclusions

We are at a point of great opportunity in development and application of forest dynamics models. Past limitations in computing capacity and in data suitable for model calibration or evaluation are becoming less restrictive. Forest landscape models, in particular, are ready to transition to a central role supporting forest management, planning, and policy decisions.

Recommendations

Transitioning forest landscape models to a central role in applied decision making will require greater attention to evaluating performance; building application support staffs; expanding the included drivers of change, and incorporating metrics for social and economic inputs and outputs.

The influence of artificial vertical macropores in a compacted soil on the growth of winterwheat. I. Growth of winterwheat on an alfisol derived from loess In field experiments on a compacted alfisol it was investigated, how artificially made vertical macropores in the compacted structure influence water extraction and growth of winterwheat compared to the compacted structure without vertical macropores and to the loosened structure. The experiments were carried out in two subsequent years with different precipitation (308, 0 and 440, 1 mm in the period of November until August of both growth periods). The influence of the different soil structure was most pronounced during periods of increasing water tension. Compared to the compacted structure, water extraction as well as yield was improved by the vertical artificial macropores to a similar extend as by the loosened structure. Both structures increased water extraction from deeper parts of the soil (25-50 cm). The beneficial effects of the vertical macropores were more pronounced in the dry compared to the wet year. Despite of the unequal distribution of roots in the compacted structure with vertical macropores, water extraction from the soil between the macropores was not negatively affected.  相似文献

Species for restoration forestry on degraded lands in the tropics are often restricted to a few well-known exotic timber species. This selection frequently leads to failed projects, as local people expect trees to cover a number of uses, not only timber. We studied local knowledge of the usefulness, scarcity and importance for wildlife of native tree species in central Veracruz, Mexico, a region with mainly secondary vegetation and remnants of tropical dry forest. Data were obtained from several workshops, in depth interviews of 40 key informants, field walks with informants, and botanical collections. Analysis included indices for cultural importance, scarcity and wildlife relevance. We documented 76 species in one or more of the categories, from primary, secondary, agroforestry and riparian habitats. Fabaceae was the most important family. All of the species were useful for humans, mainly for rural construction, food, fence posts and fuel. Two-thirds of the species were considered scarce though they were not necessarily rare??some were highly useful, overexploited species with populations insufficient for demand; this category included five of the ten most important species culturally. Also, two-thirds of the tree taxa were considered important for wildlife, especially species of Moraceae. The study shows that the local population is highly aware of the varying functions of trees in the landscape. However, few of the important species are available from regional nurseries. We propose a number of species for restoration forestry, agroforestry systems and enrichment plantings that would be valued by landowners.  相似文献

The correct assessment of mastitis pathogens for their susceptibility/resistance to cefoperazone is currently hampered by the lack of harmonized test conditions and interpretive criteria. The aim of this study was to provide a proposal for clinical breakpoints of cefoperazone which are applicable to Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae and Streptococcus uberis from cases of bovine mastitis and better reflect the situation in the bovine udder than breakpoints adopted from human medicine. For this, pharmacological data and clinical efficacy data of the documents submitted for approval of cefoperazone have been revisited. In addition, 1086 bacterial pathogens of the aforementioned six species/groups collected in Germany and in the USA during recent years were tested in parallel for their cefoperazone MICs and the zone diameters using a 75 μg disk. Subsequently, MICs were plotted against zone diameters. Based on the pharmacological data, the clinical efficacy and the microbiological data, a proposal was made for veterinary-specific breakpoints which classify members of the aforementioned species/groups as (a) susceptible to cefoperazone when their MIC is ≤ 2 μg/ml and their zone diameters are ≥ 27 mm (staphylococci or E. coli) or ≥ 21 mm (streptococci), (b) intermediate when their MIC is 4 μg/ml and their zone diameters are 22-26 mm (staphylococci or E. coli) or 16-20mm (streptococci), and (c) resistant when their MIC is ≥ 8 μg/ml and their zone diameters are ≤ 21 mm (staphylococci or E. coli) or ≤ 15 mm (streptococci).  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine whether substrate-induced priming effects in soils are sensitive to increasing levels of Cu and Zn. Soils were collected from ten plots of two Australian field experiments (Spalding and Avon) where increasing amounts of Cu or Zn had been added 2?years prior to sampling, reaching maximum values of 5,880?mg?kg?1 for Cu and 7,400?mg?kg?1 for Zn. In a 21-day incubation experiment, the effect of uniformly 14C-labeled fructose and alanine on the mineralization of the soil organic carbon (SOC) was investigated. With increasing heavy metal content, the initial peak of soil respiration after substrate addition was retarded, indicating that the microorganisms utilizing these substrates were inhibited in soils highly contaminated with heavy metals. Both substrates strongly changed the mineralization of the soil organic matter (SOM), i.e., priming effects were induced. In the soil samples with high Cu concentrations from Spalding, fructose induced a stronger additional mineralization of the SOC than in the lower contaminated samples. In the samples with the highest Zn contamination level, negative priming effects, i.e., a reduced mineralization of SOM, were observed. In contrast, heavy metal effects in the Avon soil (pH?7.6) were less pronounced since substrate mineralization and priming effects were not directly related to the increasing heavy metal content. Apart from direct toxic heavy metal effects, the tested microbial activity parameters were also indirectly affected through the toxic heavy metal effects on plant growth. At the highest heavy metal contaminations, no fresh biomass inputs occurred during the past 2?years so that microorganisms in these soils were highly substrate-limited. As a consequence, complex interactions between different levels of heavy metal contamination, the microbial activity, and the input of SOC via plant biomass have to be considered.  相似文献
