The presented study proposes a technology that could be used in developing a stormwater management strategy. The research was conducted under the hypothesis that a plant-based surface system (PBSS) can increase the capacity of sealed urban surfaces, for example, along railway tracks, to reduce runoff volume, to increase evaporation and consequently to improve the mesoclimate. To test this statement, water retention capacity, runoff–precipitation ratio, runoff delay and evapotranspiration performance were determined for different time periods (rainwater events, daily, monthly, seasonally, yearly, and throughout the entire measuring period of 18 months) by means of a measurement strategy implemented in selected urban traffic areas of Berlin, Germany, that contained railway tracks. Additionally, a computation of the air humidity improvement of an urban test location based in measurements is presented. The main elements of the tested PBSS were a 2 cm thick vegetation mat and a 20 cm thick drainage layer. The measurement strategy for the hydrological characterization included the installation and use of weighable lysimeters, rain gauges and runoff volume counters. The runoff volume determined in some summer months for the PBSS technology amounted to 9% of precipitation. The evaporation performance in these months amounted to 100% of precipitation. These results were compared with the corresponding calculated values for an asphalt surface: runoff 70–80% of precipitation and evaporation performance of 20–30% of precipitation. The study provides evidence of the positive effect of this technology on the local water balance of the treated sealed areas.  相似文献

The increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration [CO2] has been demonstrated to stimulate growth of C3 crops. Although barley is one of the important cereals of the world, little information exists about the effect of elevated [CO2] on grain yield of this crop, and realistic data from field experiments are lacking. Therefore, winter barley was grown within a crop rotation over two rotation cycles (2000 and 2003) at present and elevated [CO2](375 ppm and 550 ppm) and at two levels of nitrogen supply (adequate (N2): 262 kg ha−1 in 1st year and 179 kg ha−1 in 2nd year) and 50% of adequate (N1)). The experiments were carried out in a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system in Braunschweig, Germany. The reduction in nitrogen supply decreased seasonal radiation absorption of the green canopy under ambient [CO2] by 23%, while CO2 enrichment had a positive effect under low nitrogen (+8%). Radiation use efficiency was increased by CO2 elevation under both N levels (+12%). The CO2 effect on final above ground biomass was similar for both nitrogen treatments (N1: +16%; N2: +13%). CO2 enrichment did not affect leaf biomass, but increased ear and stem biomass. In addition, final stem dry weight was higher under low (+27%) than under high nitrogen (+13%). Similar findings were obtained for the amount of stem reserves available during grain filling. Relative CO2 response of grain yield was independent of nitrogen supply (N1: +13%; N2: +12%). The positive CO2 effect on grain yield was primarily due to a higher grain number, while changes of individual grain weight were small. This corresponds to the findings that under low nitrogen grain growth was unaffected by CO2 and that under adequate nitrogen the positive effect on grain filling rate was counterbalanced by shortening of grain filling duration.  相似文献

Rising levels of atmospheric CO2 have often been found to increase above and belowground biomass production of C3 plants. The additional translocation of organic matter into soils by increased root mass and exudates are supposed to possibly increase C pools in terrestrial ecosystems. Corresponding investigations were mostly conducted under more or less artificial indoor conditions with disturbed soils. To overcome these limitations, we conducted a 14CO2 pulse-labelling experiment within the German FACE project to elucidate the role of an arable crop system in carbon sequestration under elevated CO2. We cultivated spring wheat cv. “Minaret” with usual fertilisation and ample water supply in stainless steel cylinders forced into the soil of a control and a FACE plot. Between stem elongation and beginning of ripening the plants were repeatedly pulse-labelled with 14CO2 in the field. Soil born total CO2 and 14CO2 was monitored daily till harvest. Thereafter, the distribution of 14C was analysed in all plant parts, soil, soil mineral fractions and soil microbial biomass. Due to the small number of grown wheat plants (40) in each ring and the inherent low statistical power, no significant above and belowground growth effect of elevated CO2 was detected at harvest. But in comparison to ambient conditions, 28% more 14CO2 and 12% more total CO2 was evolved from soil under elevated CO2 (550 μmol CO2 mol−1). In the root-free soil 27% more residual 14C was found in the FACE soil than in the soil from the ambient ring. In soil samples from both treatments about 80% of residual 14C was found in the clay fraction and 7% in the silt fraction. Very low 14C contents in the CFE extracts of microbial biomass in the soil from both CO2 treatments did not allow assessing their influence on this parameter. Since the calculated specific radioactivity of soil born 14CO2 gave no indication of an accelerated priming effect in the FACE soil, we conclude that wheat plants grown under elevated CO2 can contribute to an additional net carbon gain in soils.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the duration of immunity of different vaccination schemes using the S. enteritidis live vaccine Gallivac Se and the S. enteritidis-S. typhimurium inactivated vaccine Gallimune Se+St. Three groups of Lohman Brown chickens were used. Group one was vaccinated three times orally with Gallivac Se at weeks one, seven and 13 of age. Group two was vaccinated twice orally with Gallivac Se in weeks one and seven and once i.m. with Gallimune Se+St in week 14 of age. A third group was not vaccinated and served as the control group. Eight randomly selected chickens from each of the three groups were challenged with a nalidixic acid resistant S. enteritidis PT4 strain in weeks 24, 51 and 71 of age and the same number of animals were challenged with a S. typhimurium DT 104 strain in weeks 26, 54 and 73 (75) of age.The chickens were euthanised seven days post challenge and the number of challenge strain organisms (log10 cfu) in the liver and on caecal mucosa was determined.The quantitative investigation of the challenge strain in the liver and caecal mucosa revealed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) lower challenge strain burden in the vaccinated groups compared with the non-vaccinated control group up to week 71 (73) of age. The protective effects were demonstrated for both challenge strains.  相似文献

However, little information exists about the effect of elevated [CO2] on biomass production of sugar beet, and data from field experiments are lacking. In this study, sugar beet was grown within a crop rotation over two rotation cycles (2001, 2004) at present and elevated [CO2] (375 μl l?1 and 550 μl l?1) in a free air CO2 enrichment (FACE) system and at two levels of nitrogen supply [high (N2), and 50% of high (N1)], in Braunschweig, Germany. The objective of the present study was to determine the CO2 effect on seasonal changes of leaf growth and on final biomass and sugar yield. Shading treatment was included to test whether sugar beet growth is sink limited under elevated [CO2]. CO2 elevation did not affect leaf number but increased individual leaf size in early summer resulting in a faster row closure under both N levels. In late summer CO2 enrichment increased the fraction of senescent leaves under high but not low N supply, which contributed to a negative CO2 effect on leaf area index and canopy chlorophyll content under high N at final harvest. Petioles contained up to 40% water-soluble carbohydrates, which were hardly affected by CO2 but increased by N supply. More N increased biomass production by 21% and 12% in 2001 and 2004, respectively, while beet and sugar yield was not influenced. Concentration of α-amino N in the beet fresh weight was increased under low N and decreased under high N by CO2 enrichment. The CO2 response of total biomass, beet yield and white sugar yield was unaffected by N supply. Averaged over both N levels elevated [CO2] increased total biomass by 7% and 12% in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and white sugar yield by 12% and 13%. The shading treatment in 2004 prevented the decrease in leaf area index under elevated [CO2] and high N in September. Moreover, the CO2 effect on total biomass (24%) and white sugar yield (28%) was doubled as compared to the unshaded conditions. It is concluded that the growth of the storage root of sugar beet is not source but sink limited under elevated [CO2], which minimizes the potential CO2 effect on photosynthesis and beet yield.  相似文献

Disease incidence and severity was studied for winter wheat variety Bezostaya 1 and susceptible checks based on data from international nurseries from 1969 to 2010 and from 51 countries across major winter wheat production regions totalling 1,047 reports. The frequency of leaf rust and stripe rust occurrence was stable over time with marked increases in severity in 2001–2010 especially in Europe and Central and West Asia. Substantial global reductions in stem rust occurrence were recorded and attributed primarily to use of resistance genes although the recent emergence of race Ug99 makes wheat more vulnerable. The occurrence of powdery mildew remained globally stable over time. It was the most important foliar disease in Western and Southern Europe, where the frequency was very high for all time periods coupled with slight increases in severity during 2001–2010. The durable resistance of variety Bezostaya 1 to all four diseases was demonstrated in the study using comparisons of disease severities of Bezostaya 1 and the most susceptible entries. The Lr34/Yr18/Pm38 pleiotrophic set possessed by Bezostaya 1 is currently an important target for selection because it is now amenable to molecular selection. Increased use of genes like Lr34 combined with strategies to minimize cultivation of extremely susceptible varieties will contribute to long term maintenance of low and non-damaging disease levels. The durable disease resistance of Bezostaya 1, combined with its adaptability and good end-use quality, was a significant reason for its huge impact in agriculture over the last 50?years.  相似文献

We report the presence of two disconnected superconducting domes in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of partially germanium-substituted CeCu2Si2. The lower density superconducting dome lies on the threshold of antiferromagnetic order, indicating magnetically mediated pairing, whereas the higher density superconducting regime straddles a weakly first-order volume collapse, suggesting a pairing interaction based on spatially extended density fluctuations. Two distinct pairing mechanisms thus appear to operate in the single, wide, superconducting range of stoichiometric CeCu2Si2, both of which might apply more generally to other classes of correlated electron systems.  相似文献
