Resource limitation is an important determinant of life history and behavior while mediating competition and reproduction among organisms. Discreet and closed systems such as grain kernels and seeds impose drastic restrictions to grain beetles that spend their immature stages within a single kernel selected by their mother. This is the case of internally feeding stored grain beetles, such as the grain weevils. Female egg-laying decisions and larval competition largely determine resource limitation for such insects where clustered egg distribution and contest competition with larval interference and cannibalism take place. As the clustered eggs within a grain lead to larval competition and conspecific weevil larvae face each other off during development allowing the emergence of one or two larvae per kernel, we hypothesized that such competition and consequent cannibalism will have fitness consequences for the competing individuals and their offspring. Thus, larvae of the granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.) and the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motsch.) were subjected to larval competition with cannibalism, and lack of it, to assess the potential fitness consequence of cannibalism on these non-carnivorous pest species of stored grains. Larval cannibalism reduced developmental time of maize weevil, but not of granary weevil. However, such condition led to heavier adult weevils of both species exhibiting higher reproductive output generating more and better quality progeny than non-cannibal weevils. These findings indicate direct nutritional benefits of cannibalism to grain weevils favoring their status of key pest species of stored cereal grains.  相似文献

The sensitivity and specificity of an immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA) was evaluated in a blind serologic study of a group of disease-free pigs and a group of pigs experimentally infected with intestinal homogenate containing Lawsonia intracellularis organisms. Sixty pigs from the control group were kept in the source farm, and another 60 animals were transferred to an isolation unit aid challenged intragastrically. All animals were bled before and 21 days after challenge. Fecal samples were collected on the same dates. The IPMA results were tested for sensitivity and specificity in a 2 x 2 table using the challenged and nonchallenged status as gold standard. Sensitivity and specificity were evaluated for different cutoff points (serum dilutions). Specificities of 100% were obtained for all the serum dilutions tested (1:15, 1:30, 1:60, and 1:120). The sensitivity levels were 90.7%, 88.9%, 81.5%, and 75.9% for the serum dilutions 1:15, 1:30, 1:60, and 1:120, respectively. The sensitivity of the dilution 1:15 was slightly, but not significantly, higher than the dilution currently used as the cutoff point (1:30). Cross-reactivity of the IPMA test was evaluated using sera from pigs experimentally inoculated with Brachyspira pilosicoli and various Campylobacter species. All these samples were negative. Sera samples from 3 porcine proliferative enteropathy known negative populations, 40 growing pigs from 2 commercial farms and a group of 6 cesarean-derived and colostrum-deprived pigs, also tested negative by IPMA. The IPMA serologic test with the cutoff point of 1:30 showed specificity of 100% and sensitivity close to 90% and, therefore, is an appropriate diagnostic test for herd screening but not for diagnosing PPE on the individual level.  相似文献

Little is known about the humoral and, especially, cell-mediated immune response in pigs exposed to Lawsonia intracellularis. The objectives of this study were to investigate the onset and duration of fecal shedding, cell-mediated and humoral immune responses in pigs after challenge with a pathogenic isolate or a commercial live vaccine strain of L. intracellularis. Twenty-four 5-week-old pigs were exposed to 4.4x10(9) organisms of a pathogenic L. intracellularis isolate PHE/MN1-00 (10 pigs), a L. intracellularis live attenuated vaccine strain (10 pigs) or sham inoculum (4 pigs). Fecal, serum and whole blood samples were collected from all animals before exposure and weekly up to 13 weeks post inoculation and tested by PCR, immunoperoxidase monolayer assay serology and an interferon-gamma assay, respectively. One animal from each group was euthanized on day 22 post exposure to confirm infection. Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were initially detected 2 weeks after exposure in pigs challenged with the pathogenic isolate, and 5 and 4 weeks, respectively, in pigs exposed to the modified-live vaccine group. Humoral and cell-mediated immune responses were still detected in some pigs from both L. intracellularis exposed groups 13 weeks after exposure. Fecal shedding was initially detected 1 week and lasted, intermittently, 12 weeks post exposure in pigs challenged with the pathogenic isolate, while fecal shedding was first detected 2 weeks and lasted, also intermittently, 9 weeks after exposure to the vaccine. In summary, both pathogenic isolate challenged and vaccine exposed pigs demonstrated long-term shedding of and immune responses to L. intracellularis.  相似文献

Protein digestibility, proteolytic activity, and post-embryonic development of Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were assessed in larvae reared on artificial diet containing 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75% (w/w) of the synthetic trypsin inhibitor benzamidine. Diet consumption was affected by the inhibitor when the insects were exposed to 0.50% benzamidine showing a 4-day delay and a 70%-higher peak of consumption. Larva weight gain was also affected by benzamidine and again the results of 0.50% benzamidine were unexpected due to the worst performance of the insects at this inhibitor concentration and not at 0.75% benzamidine. These patterns of consumption and weight gain were however consistent with the results of protein digestibility, which affects larvae mortality and adult emergence. The insect proteolytic activity was also affected by benzamidine, particularly at 0.50%. These results indicate that the insects are able to circumvent the potentially harmful effects of the inhibitor since at the highest concentration the negative impact is mitigated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Volumetric yield analysis is critical to optimizing performance in the timber industry. In the Amazon and in the Amapá state, this information is still little known and scarce, and therefore this study was developed to obtain and analyze the volumetric yield coefficient of ten commercial tree species and to test the variation by diameter class. We collect data of volumetric yield from for ten commercial species. For each species, the yields in different diameter classes were analyzed, as well as the yield difference between the species. The overall yield obtained for the sawmills (43.95%) and the yield of each species are within the established standards for operations in the industry according to the legal requirements. There were no differences (p ≥ 0.05) in diameter classes for species with the exception of Dinizia excelsa and Handroanthus albus. However, there was no linear increase (p ≥ 0.05) between the diameter and yield of lumber for all species. The species Dinizia excelsa, Hymenolobium petraeum, Ocotea rubra and Vochysia guianensis show a significant difference in yield for the other species due to the higher obtained values, however, they are statistically similar when compared to each other.  相似文献

Background

An overdose of pentobarbital sodium administered IV is the most commonly used method of euthanasia in veterinary medicine. Determining death after the infusion relies on the observation of physical variables. However, it is unknown when cortical electrical activity and brainstem function are lost in a sequence of events before death.

Hypothesis/Objectives

To examine changes in the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex and brainstem during an overdose of pentobarbital sodium solution for euthanasia. Our testing hypothesis is that isoelectric pattern of the brain in support of brain death occurs before absence of electrocardiogram (ECG) activity.

Animals

Fifteen horses requiring euthanasia.

Methods

Prospective observational study. Horses with neurologic, orthopedic, and cardiac illnesses were selected and instrumented for recording of electroencephalogram, electrooculogram, brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER), and ECG. Physical and neurologic (brainstem reflexes) variables were monitored.

Results

Loss of cortical electrical activity occurred during or within 52 seconds after the infusion of euthanasia solution. Cessation of brainstem function as evidenced by a lack of brainstem reflexes and disappearance of the BAER happened subsequently. Despite undetectable heart sounds, palpable arterial pulse, and mean arterial pressure, recordable ECG was the last variable to be lost after the infusion (5.5–16 minutes after end of the infusion).

Conclusions and Clinical Importance

Overdose of pentobarbital sodium solution administered IV is an effective, fast, and humane method of euthanasia. Brain death occurs within 73–261 seconds of the infusion. Although absence of ECG activity takes longer to occur, brain death has already occurred.  相似文献
