IntroductionThe use of alveolar recruitment maneuvers during general anaesthesia of horses is a potentially useful therapeutic option for the ventilatory management. While the routine application of recruitments would benefit from the availability of dedicated large animal ventilators their impact on ventilation and perfusion in the horse is not yet well documented nor completely understood.Case historyA healthy 533 kg experimental horse underwent general anaesthesia in lateral recumbency. During intermittent positive pressure ventilation a stepwise alveolar recruitment maneuver was performed.ManagementAnaesthesia was induced with ketamine and midazolam and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen using a large animal circle system. Mechanical ventilation was applied in pressure ventilation mode and an alveolar recruitment maneuver performed employing a sequence of ascending and descending positive end expiratory pressures. Next to the standard monitoring, which included spirometry, additionally three non-invasive monitoring techniques were used: electrical impedance tomography (EIT), volumetric capnography and respiratory ultrasonic plethysmography. The functional images continuously delivered by EIT initially showed markedly reduced ventilation in the dependent lung and allowed on-line monitoring of the dynamic changes in the distribution of ventilation during the recruitment maneuver. Furthermore, continuous monitoring of compliance, dead space fraction, tidal volumes and changes in end expiratory lung volume were possible without technical difficulties.Follow upThe horse made an unremarkable recovery.ConclusionThe novel non-invasive monitoring technologies used in this study provided unprecedented insights into the physiology of lung collapse and recruitment. It has been discovered during the past few years that demosponges of the order Verongida such as Aplysina cavernicola exhibit chitin-based skeletons. Verongida sponges are well known to produce bioactive brominated tyrosine derivatives. We could recently demonstrate that brominated compounds do not exclusively occur in the cellular matrix but also in the skeletons of the marine sponges Aplysina cavernicola and Ianthella basta. Our measurements imply that these yet unknown compounds are strongly, possibly covalently bound to the sponge skeletons. In the present work, we determined the skeletal amino acid composition of the demosponge A. cavernicola especially with respect to the presence of halogenated amino acids. The investigations of the skeletons before and after MeOH extraction confirmed that only a small amount of the brominated skeleton-bound compounds dissolves in MeOH. The main part of the brominated compounds is strongly attached to the skeletons but can be extracted for example by using Ba(OH)2. Various halogenated tyrosine derivatives were identified by GC-MS and LC-MS in these Ba(OH)2 extracts of the skeletons. 相似文献

The high performance of ceria (CeO2) as an oxygen buffer and active support for noble metals in catalysis relies on an efficient supply of lattice oxygen at reaction sites governed by oxygen vacancy formation. We used high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional calculations to unravel the local structure of surface and subsurface oxygen vacancies on the (111) surface. Electrons left behind by released oxygen localize on cerium ions. Clusters of more than two vacancies exclusively expose these reduced cerium ions, primarily by including subsurface vacancies, which therefore play a crucial role in the process of vacancy cluster formation. These results have implications for our understanding of oxidation processes on reducible rare-earth oxides. 相似文献

Transgenic tobacco and Arabidopsis thaliana expressing the bacterial enzyme salicylate hydroxylase cannot accumulate salicylic acid (SA). This defect not only makes the plants unable to induce systemic acquired resistance, but also leads to increased susceptibility to viral, fungal, and bacterial pathogens. The enhanced susceptibility extends even to host-pathogen combinations that would normally result in genetic resistance. The Turonian (93.5 to 89.3 million years ago) was one of the warmest periods of the Phanerozoic eon, with tropical sea surface temperatures over 35 degrees C. High-amplitude sea-level changes and positive delta18O excursions in marine limestones suggest that glaciation events may have punctuated this episode of extreme warmth. New delta18O data from the tropical Atlantic show synchronous shifts approximately 91.2 million years ago for both the surface and deep ocean that are consistent with an approximately 200,000-year period of glaciation, with ice sheets of about half the size of the modern Antarctic ice cap. Even the prevailing supergreenhouse climate was not a barrier to the formation of large ice sheets, calling into question the common assumption that the poles were always ice-free during past periods of intense global warming. 相似文献

The physics at the event horizon resembles the behavior of waves in moving media. Horizons are formed where the local speed of the medium exceeds the wave velocity. We used ultrashort pulses in microstructured optical fibers to demonstrate the formation of an artificial event horizon in optics. We observed a classical optical effect: the blue-shifting of light at a white-hole horizon. Images taken by the Stardust mission during its flyby of 81P/Wild 2 show the comet to be a 5-kilometer oblate body covered with remarkable topographic features, including unusual circular features that appear to be impact craters. The presence of high-angle slopes shows that the surface is cohesive and self-supporting. The comet does not appear to be a rubble pile, and its rounded shape is not directly consistent with the comet being a fragment of a larger body. The surface is active and yet it retains ancient terrain. Wild 2 appears to be in the early stages of its degradation phase as a small volatile-rich body in the inner solar system. 相似文献

Role of aggregate surface and core fraction in the sequestration of carbon from dung in a temperate grassland soil 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sequestration of dung carbon in soil depends on the location and rate at which it is immobilized in soil aggregates. Here C4 dung (δ13C = ?16.1‰) or C3 dung (δ13C = ?26.8‰) were applied to a temperate permanent pasture C3 soil (δ13C = ?27.9‰). Triplicate samples were taken from C3 and C4 dung remaining at the surface, and in the 0–1 and 1–5 cm soil layers in the unamended control and under the C3 and C4 dung patches after 7, 14, 29, 42 and 70 days after the application of the dung. Macroaggregates (≥ 4 mm) at the lower depth (1–5 cm) were mechanically fractionated into surface and core fractions by a combination of shock freezing followed by wet sieving. Neither overall nor differential carbon isotope fractionation occurred in the dung remaining at the surface. The incorporation of C4 dung significantly increased the δ13C content of the 0–1 cm layer of the C3 soil. Dung C sequestration did not exceed 10% for the 0–1 cm layer and was only 20% for the whole soil (0–30 cm) during the 7‐day experiment. Only 32–66% of the C from dung in the 1–5 cm layer was sequestered in the aggregates; the major proportion was initially preferentially attached to their surfaces, but incorporated into aggregates within the following 14 days. The majority of dung, however, soon resided between the aggregates, pointing to the important role of the inter‐aggregate fraction in short‐term C dynamics of dung in this pasture soil. 相似文献

The contribution of the diploid wheat species Aegilops tauschii (Coss.) Schmall to the technological properties of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was previously studied by the investigation of synthetic hexaploids derived from tetraploid durum wheat (T. turgidum L.) and three diploid Ae. tauschii lines. The results indicated that bread volume, gluten index, SDS‐sedimentation volume, and maximum resistance of gluten were significantly influenced by the Ae. tauschii lines. To determine the relationship between technological properties and qualitative and quantitative compositions of gluten proteins, the flours of parental and synthetic lines were extracted using a modified Osborne fractionation. Gliadin and glutenin fractions were then characterized by reversed‐phase (RP) HPLC on C8 silica gel. The HPLC patterns revealed typical differences between synthetic and parental lines. The gliadin patterns of three synthetic lines and the glutenin patterns of two synthetic lines were more similar to that of the diploid Ae. tauschii parents involved in the hybrids. In the glutenin pattern of one synthetic line, characteristics from both Ae. tauschii and the durum wheat parents were observed. The amount of total gliadin and gliadin types of the synthetic lines was mostly intermediate between those of the durum and Ae. tauschii parents. The amounts of total glutenin and glutenin types (HMW and LMW subunits) of the synthetic lines were generally higher than those of the parental lines, and the ratio of gliadins to glutenins was significantly decreased. High positive correlations were found between the amount of total glutenins, HMW, and LMW subunits and bread volume, maximum resistance and extension area of gluten, and SDS‐sedimentation volume. The ratio of gliadins to glutenin subunits had a strong negative influence on these properties. The protein content of the flours and the amount of total gluten proteins were not correlated with any of the technological properties. Results on the relationship between biochemical characteristics and the breadmaking properties indicated that wheat prebreeding would benefit from studies on protein types and quantification in the choice of parents. In addition, the potential of the diploid Ae. tauschii for improvement of breadmaking quality should be further exploited. 相似文献
