  • 1. Chilean rivers have a large potential for hydropower development, and they also contain a unique native fish fauna with a high level of endemism. Several diversion hydropower plants have recently been constructed in Chile; however, the response of fish communities to these new hydropower plant designs is not well known.
  • 2. Responses of native and non‐native fish to the construction and operation of a new hydropower plant that diverts water from two rivers were quantified. The Laja River is highly regulated and manipulated with three older (40 yr) dam‐based hydropower plants and irrigation diversions located upstream from the new facility. In contrast, the Rucúe River has no other hydropower facilities and is comparatively undisturbed.
  • 3. Prior to construction, the Laja River had a fish community with lower species richness compared with the Rucúe River. The fish community structure in the Laja River was dramatically altered after the new hydropower facility began operation. On the other hand, in the Rucúe River, even though abundance of fish declined, there was less of a change in the total fish community structure. The fish community in the Rucúe River exhibited greater resistance to change compared with the Laja River.
  • 4. The species most affected were the introduced salmonids and an endangered native species Percilia irwini.
  • 5. Although diversion hydropower designs may have less impact than traditional dam‐based hydropower facilities, results of this study indicate that diversion hydropower structures can cause large changes in the fish community.

Metabolic (oxygen consumption) rate, opercular abduction rate and tail beat frequency were determined in two strains of diploid and triploid female brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) while these fish swam at 0.37±0.02 body lengths per sec in a Blazka respirometer. Total blood hemoglobin level was also measured and opercular condition examined. Total blood hemoglobin levels in diploids and triploids were equal. The opercular abduction rate was the same in diploids and triploids (regardless of whether triploid opercular condition was good or poor) yet triploids had a lower oxygen consumption rate than diploids, indicating that triploids take up less oxygen than diploids per opercular cycle. Tail beat frequency, an indicator of swimming effort, was the same in diploids and triploids, suggesting that triploids require less oxygen than diploids for a similar swimming effort.  相似文献

The oligosaccharide profile of raw mature seeds of seven different legumes indigenous to the Philippines was measured in 70% ethanol extracts of the seeds by thin layer chromatography using HPTLC plates and quantified by a densitometer. Based on the results, the legumes could be ranked according to decreasing oligosaccharide content or flatulence potential as follows: Sam-samping (Clitoria ternatea)>hyacinth bean (Dolichos lablab)> sabawel (Mucuna pruriens)>lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus)>swordbean (Canavalia gladiata)>rice bean (Vigna umbellata)>jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). Sam-samping had 4.79% total oligosaccharides and hyacinth bean or batao, 3.66%. A jack bean accession had 1.79% oligosaccharides.Simple processing methods were tested to detoxify the oligosaccharides. Soaking the batao seeds had no effect while boiling even resulted in a net 23–31% increase in the levels of raffinose, stachyose and verbascose. On the other hand, two min of dry roasting resulted in complete removal of oligosaccharides whereas germination resulted in about 30–40% decrease after 1 and 2 days, respectively.Part of MS thesis of the senior author.  相似文献

The reaction of the Nalpha-hippuryllysine (BzGK) with fructose was investigated in two model systems to obtain an insight in fructose-induced modification of lysine in bakery products. After BzGK and fructose had been heated in a buffered low-moisture model system (80 degrees C, 60 min, aW = 0.86, pH 7.4), formation of epimeric Heyns compounds Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-glucosyl-lysine (BzGGlcK) and Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-mannosyl-lysine (BzGManK) was clearly demonstrated using RP-HPLC with UV as well as MS detection. The Amadori compound Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-fructosyl-lysine (BzGFruK) was formed in glucose-containing samples. When BzGK was added to the dough of fructose-containing biscuits, the Heyns compounds were detectable after baking at 175 degrees C for 7 min. The yields of the Heyns compounds in the fructose-containing biscuits and the yield of the Amadori compound in the glucose-containing biscuits were determined to 33 and 63%, pointing to the fact that formation of substantial amounts of Heyns products is very likely in fructose-containing bakery products.  相似文献

Habitat amount and fragmentation usually covary in natural and simulated landscapes. A common way of distinguishing between their effects is to take the residuals of the fragmentation index or indices regressed on habitat amount, as the index of habitat fragmentation. We used data on prairie songbird relative abundances from southern Alberta, Canada to compare this approach with the reverse: taking the residuals of habitat amount regressed on habitat fragmentation as the index of habitat amount. We used generalized additive models (GAMs) to derive residuals, and modeled relative abundances using linear mixed-effects models. The modeling approach used strongly influenced the statistical results. Using residuals as an index of fragmentation resulted in an apparently stronger effect of habitat amount relative to habitat fragmentation. In contrast, habitat fragmentation appeared more influential than habitat amount when residuals were used as an index of habitat amount. Regression of residuals may eliminate statistical collinearity, but cannot distinguish between the ecological effects of habitat amount and fragmentation. Habitat fragmentation may therefore have a larger effect on species than previously studies have shown, but experimental manipulations of underlying mechanisms are ultimately required to address this debate.  相似文献

Vaccination and medication with terramycin resulted in increased survival of pen-reared coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) exposed to vibriosis in a Maine estuary. Mortality was significantly lower (P < 0.001) in vaccinated fish than in fish receiving terramycin in their food. An unexpected increase in growth also occurred in vaccinated and medicated fish. Six months after the outbreak began, 25% of vaccinated, 12% of the medicated, and 6% of the untreated group reached minimum market size (200 g).  相似文献
