Whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, of initial mean weight 260–265 g were fed either a high-fat or a low-fat diet (dietary fat: 27.5% vs. 12.6%) to examine the influence of dietary fat level on feed intake, growth and patterns of fat deposition. The fish were held at 14.5 °C under a 24L:0D photoperiod, and were fed for 4 h each day. The experiment was run for 11 weeks during which feed intake (three times by X-radiography) and growth were monitored. Samples of fish were taken for body composition analysis at the start and end of the experiment. There were only small differences between dietary treatment groups in feed intake and final body weights, but the body composition of the fish was significantly influenced by the fat content of the diet. The whitefish fed the high-fat diet tended to have higher relative fat contents in the viscera [% fat as mean (SD): 29.6 (9.4)% vs. 22.1 (10.0)%] and carcass [% fat: 12.7 (1.9)% vs. 10.5 (1.3)%] than their counterparts fed the low-fat diet. This resulted in a higher whole-body fat concentration [% fat: 14.0 (1.9)% vs. 11.5 (1.5)%] amongst the fish fed the high-fat diet, and these fish had a higher energy gain than the whitefish fed the low-fat diet. The results confirm that it is possible to manipulate the chemical composition of whitefish by changing dietary composition. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998  相似文献

In this article, we report on the increments in basal area and tree diameter as well as the structural development observed in variously thinned plots that underwent either uneven- or even-sized treatment. The experimental forest was originally an uneven-sized mixed stand dominated by Picea abies. Twenty-eight randomized sample plots underwent each treatment, and the trees were monitored for 15 growing seasons after thinning. The uneven-sized plots retained a reverse J-shaped diameter distribution, but this was changed into a bell shape by low thinning in the even-sized plots. Absolute basal area increment was positively correlated with basal area in the even-sized treatment but not in the uneven-sized treatment. In the latter, all of the plots grew almost equally well, and only the basal area of broadleaves explained slightly positively the increment variation. Relative basal area increment was negatively correlated with basal area in both treatments. Additionally, the basal area of Scots pine was a positive explanatory variable in the relative increment variation in the even-sized treatment. For the dominant Norway spruce trees, diameter increment was negatively correlated with basal area in both treatments and, conversely, heavy removal increased the diameter increment. Relative basal area increment averaged 5% annually in uneven-sized plots representing the “target selection.” This was more than double the increment observed for the even-sized plots that represented the “prevailing practice.” Likewise, the diameter increment of Norway spruce trees was 48% greater in the uneven-sized compared to the even-sized plots.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the impact of grazed grass (PAS bulls) and grass silage-based (UB bulls) diets on muscle colour, intramuscular fatty acid composition and carcass characteristics of Hereford bulls with similar concentrate allowances, ages, growth rates and carcass weights. The carcass fat score of the UB bulls was 14% higher than that of the PAS bulls (P < 0.05). Muscle lightness was 5%, redness 5% and yellowness 8% higher in the UB bulls than in the PAS bulls (P < 0.05). The Longissimus muscle (LM) of the UB bulls contained a higher proportion of 14:1 and 16:0 fatty acids compared to that of the PAS bulls (P < 0.05). In contrast, the LM of the PAS bulls contained a higher proportion of 18:3n-3 fatty acid and 18:2 cis-9 trans-11 CLA compared to that of the UB bulls (P < 0.01). There were no differences in saturated fatty acid, monounsaturated fatty acid or polyunsaturated fatty acid proportions of the LM muscle between treatments.  相似文献

The size of anadromous whitefish caught with dip nets in the River Tornionjoki in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia has decreased during recent decades. To find an explanation for this trend, ascending whitefish were sampled in the lower part of the river in August 2016, and they were divided into two groups according to fish length. The length of the SMALL group was ≤ 32 cm (n = 32) and that of the LARGE group ≥ 33 cm (n = 65). The elemental analysis of otoliths revealed that the barium concentration was clearly higher in otoliths from the SMALL group compared to the LARGE group. This indicates that the fish in the LARGE group had migrated to feed further south in the Gulf of Bothnia, with a higher salinity, than the fish in the SMALL group. Because of this migration difference, and a decline in the gillnet effort, especially in the feeding areas near the river mouth, it is assumed that proportionally more fish in the SMALL group are able to ascend the river to spawn than previously, thus decreasing the mean size. At the same time, the heavy gillnet fishery in the south removes fish from the LARGE group.  相似文献

Objective The study aimed to investigate the effect of varying pulse lengths of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), and 2.5 hours of continuous pulse‐delivered iNO on pulmonary gas exchange in anaesthetized horses. Study Design Experimental study. Animals Six Standardbred horses. Methods Horses received acepromazine, detomidine, guaifenesin, thiopentone and isoflurane in oxygen, were positioned in dorsal recumbency and were breathing spontaneously. iNO was on average pulsed during the first 20, 30, 43 or 73% of the inspiration in 15 minute steps. The pulse length that corresponded to the highest (peak) partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2) in the individual horses was determined and delivered for a further 1.5 hours. Data measured or calculated included arterial and mixed venous partial pressures of O2 and CO2, heart rate, respiratory rate, expired minute ventilation, pulmonary and systemic arterial mean pressures, cardiac output and venous admixture. Data (mean ± SD) was analysed using anova with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results Although the pulse length of iNO that corresponded to peak PaO2 varied between horses, administration of all pulse lengths of iNO increased PaO2 compared to baseline. The shortest pulse lengths that resulted in the peak PaO2 were 30 and 43% of the inspiration. Administration of iNO increased PaO2 (12.6 ± 4.1 kPa [95 ± 31 mmHg] at baseline to a range of 23.0 ± 8.4 to 25.3 ± 9.0 kPa [173 to 190 mmHg]) and PaCO2 (8.5 ± 1.2 kPa [64 ± 9 mmHg] to 9.8 ± 1.5 kPa [73 ± 11 mmHg]) and decreased venous admixture from 32 ± 6% to 25 ± 6%. The increase in PaO2 and decrease in venous admixture was sustained for the entire 2.5 hours of iNO delivery. Conclusions The improvement in arterial oxygenation during pulsed delivery of iNO was significant and sustained throughout 2.5 hours of anaesthesia. Clinical relevance Pulsed iNO potentially could be used clinically to counteract hypoxemia in anaesthetized horses.  相似文献

Environmental considerations concerning physical activity and health relate to accessibility, and this accessibility is directly influenced by how recreation areas and facilities are provided and managed. This study aims to provide some evidence to support the general argument that a good supply of recreation opportunities encourages people's participation in outdoor recreation. The study's data are compiled from an outdoor recreation survey of Finnish 15- to 74-year olds, conducted between 1998 and 2000, which focused on the recreational behaviour of people living in Helsinki (n=367), and their visits to close-to-home outdoor recreation areas. Almost all (97%) of the Helsinki residents surveyed participated in outdoor recreation during the year. Half of them embarked on a recreational outing daily or every other day. The most typical close-to-home activity was walking for pleasure or fitness. Other popular activities were cycling, jogging, dog walking and outings with children. Physical or fitness activities represented about 90% of all close-to-home outings. Those who lived in the suburbs of Helsinki participated in close-to-home recreation significantly more often than those living in the city centre, and had done so more recently in terms of when the survey was conducted. The amount of green areas in the vicinity of the participant's residence and the short distance to green areas suitable for recreational use increased the number of close-to-home outings among Helsinki residents. This supports the argument that a good provision of opportunities promotes an active lifestyle. Thus, recreation areas and facilities should be located close to residential areas, and provide safe, comfortable and year-round access for daily outings.  相似文献

To conserve a rare plant, conservation programs must be guided by the biological attributes of the species. What constitutes the most critical biological information for plant conservation has been the issue of discussion for the last 30 years. Most scientists promote an approach that is either ecological or genetic in emphasis. Ecological and genetic processes will often interact synergistically to influence the population viability and to determine the persistence of populations in the long run. Consequently, conservation management of plant species, in addition to ecological information, requires a robust understanding of underlying genetic processes as well as the variation within and between populations. Conservation has a cost and the resources available for conservation programs are always limited. Therefore, conservation management strategies should not only be scientifically justified but also practical in terms of resource availability. Shorea lumutensis is a rare and endemic dipterocarp in Peninsular Malaysia. A comprehensive research activity was initiated to assess the population ecology and population genetics of S. lumutensis to elucidate specific ecological and genetic requirements and subsequently to set conservation strategies and priorities. This paper is apparently the first attempt at applying both the ecological and genetic approaches into conservation management of a rare dipterocarp. In addition, this paper also attempts to link the gaps between conservation research and conservation management in a realistic manner. It is our hope that this study will serve as a model for the study of other rare dipterocarps which should be given priority for conservation.  相似文献

A convenient model type for simulating the dynamics of uneven-aged and uneven-sized stands of Finland is individual-tree model. This is because the stand structures are complex due to the presence of several tree species and irregular size distributions of trees. The required minimum set of models in this approach consists of species-specific individual-tree diameter increment models, individual-tree survival models, and ingrowth models. The development of these models needs data in which the diameter and survival of each tree of the sample plots is known for at least two time points. For this, the trees need to be numbered, which is tedious in uneven-aged forests due to the great number of small trees and the continuous ingrowth process. This study proposes a modelling approach that fits the above models but requires only the diameter distributions of the plots in the beginning and at the end of the measurement interval. The method uses non-linear optimization to derive such values for model parameters that, when the models are applied to the initial diameter distribution, the simulated stand development results in a diameter distribution which agrees with the measured ending distribution. The study showed that the method produces similar models and model parameters as regression analysis. Since the method is less demanding in terms of modelling data, it brings new data sets available for modelling the dynamics of uneven-aged stands and reduces the cost of collecting new data. The models fitted by the proposed optimization method were rather similar to the models developed earlier for Finnish uneven-aged forests.  相似文献

The structure of cellulose, especially the microfibril angles (MFAs), in compression wood of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] was studied by wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering and polarizing microscopy. On the basis of the X-ray scattering experiments the average MF As of the cell wall layers S2 and S1 of the studied sample are 39 and 89, respectively; and the average diameter and length of the cellulose crystallites are 2.9 and 20.0nm, respectively. The average of the whole MFA distribution is shown to agree with the one obtained by polarizing microscopy of macerated fibers.  相似文献

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), (initial weight ~ 90 g) were fed diets differing in fat content (27.5% versus 12.6%) to examine the effects of dietary fat level on growth and fat deposition. During phase 1, which was run for 11 weeks, the fish were fed either a high- (27.5%) or low-fat (12.6%) diet. The fish were held at 14.5 °C under a 24 h:0 h light:dark photoperiod and were fed for 4 h each day during this phase. Subsequently, in phase 2, both diets were presented simultaneously, and the influence of adiposity on growth and fat deposition was examined in a growth trial which lasted for 8 months. There were no significant differences in body weights at the end of phase 1 (360.7 ± 7.7 g versus 348.2 ± 18.7 g for the fish on the high- and low-fat diets, respectively), but body composition was influenced by the fat content of the diet. The trout fed the high-fat diet had higher viscerosomatic indices (VSI: 11.7 ± 2.0% versus 9.1 ± 0.7%) and higher visceral fat contents (per cent fat: 38.0 ± 6.7% versus 23.3 ± 3.7%) than trout fed the low-fat diet. The percentage fat contents of the carcass (per cent fat: 12.4 ± 1.0% versus 9.3 ± 0.7%) and whole body (per cent fat: 15.4 ± 1.6% versus 10.5 ± 0.7%) were higher amongst the trout fed the high-fat diet, and these fish had a higher energy gain than those fish fed the low-fat diet. Differences in adiposity between the trout fed the high- and low-fat diets did not result in any differences in weight gain when the fish were provided with both diets simultaneously. During phase 2, the fish that had previously been fed the low-fat diet deposited more fat than those fed the high-fat diet during phase 1. The latter maintained whole body fat concentrations at ± 15% (phase 1: 15.4 ± 1.6%; phase 2: 15.2 ± 1.2%), whereas the fish that had been fed the low-fat diet increased their body fat concentration during phase 2 (phase 1: 10.5 ± 0.7%; phase 2: 14.7 ± 1.3%). Thus, there were no significant differences between groups in either body weight or proximate composition by the end of the experiment.  相似文献
