The radiographic appearance of nodular fat necrosis is described in ten cats and one dog. The most common radiographic sign was the presence of a focal mineralized circular to oval soft tissue mass in the abdominal fat as present in 9 cats. These masses had a distinct eggshell-like rim encapsulating the lesion. In one cat and one dog multiple masses were present, without radiographic signs of mineralization. Abdominal ultrasound was performed in three cats and one dog, findings included the presence of hyperechoic masses with associated acoustic shadowing, some with a hypoechoic centre. Almost all animals were old and obese. In three cats and one dog, changes were confirmed with biopsy or post mortem examination. Lesions having the appearance of those in this paper are most likely incidental findings and should not be confused with abdominal masses of neoplastic origin. Ultrasound can be helpful in identifying such lesions. 相似文献

Laboratory studies show that the nitrous oxide (N2O) reduction rate in soil is strongly inhibited by trace metal contamination; however, this effect appears transient. Here we assess if this recovery is due to microbial adaptation associated with shifts in community composition. Soils were spiked with zinc chloride (0-5000 mg Zn kg−1) in a factorial design with 3 application rates of organic matter (OM), i.e. 0, 2 and 4 g milled hay kg−1, to accelerate growth and, potentially, adaptation rate. The soil treatments were incubated outdoors with free drainage during 1 year and periodically sampled. The potential N2O reduction rate, measured in an anaerobic laboratory assay, was inhibited by Zn during the first 2 months after spiking with 50% inhibition at 500-1000 mg Zn kg−1. After 6 months exposure, the N2O reduction rate recovered to at least 80% of the rate in the control treatment in the series receiving OM up to the largest Zn dose, but strong inhibition remained in the series which did not receive OM. In this series recovery was only observed after 12 months exposure. Soil pore water Zn concentrations did not explain the recovery of the N2O reduction rate in the control series suggesting that recovery is due to adaptation and not to reduced Zn bioavailability. The faster recovery in the series receiving OM was partially, but not fully related to the effects of OM on Zn bioavailability. The recovery at all Zn and OM treatments co-varied with a recovery of nosZ gene abundance from about 1 × 107 copies g−1 soil in the soil treatments with decreased activity to 5 × 108 copies g−1 soil in the other soil treatments. The nosZ gene DGGE profile of the soil microbial communities revealed minor changes in the nosZ containing community. This study strongly suggests that the transient effects of trace metal inhibition of N2O reduction is due to the development of a Zn tolerant denitrifying community. 相似文献

The vertical distribution and seasonal timing of sexual maturation were investigated in Atlantic cod in four large commercial sea cages in Northern Norway during their second year of on‐growth. Replicate cages were exposed to either natural light (NL) or continuous light (LL) from May 2007 to January 2008. Hydro‐acoustic monitoring revealed that the cod in the NL cages were mainly distributed from 5 to 13 m depth at day while they were more dispersed and swam deeper at night. A clear ascent was observed prior to feeding events. The cod in the LL cages displayed a similar seasonal and daily pattern, but with a more dispersed vertical distribution range at both day and night. It is hypothesized that surface feeding motivation resulted in cod preferentially occupying the upper reaches of the sea cage, generally at depths < 13 m. This would also reduce the need for excessive alterations in swim bladder volume. Both the LL and the NL groups were exposed to LL the year before the study, resulting in first time sexual maturation (puberty) being delayed until the summer in both groups. Background
Functional diversity illustrates the range of ecological functions in a community. It allows revealing the appearance of functional redundancy in communities and processes of community assembly. Functional redundancy illustrates the overlap in ecological functions of community members which may be an indicator of community resilience. We evaluated patterns of species richness, functional diversity and functional redundancy on tadpole communities in rainforest streams in Madagascar. The grain legume (pulse) faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is grown world-wide as a protein source for food and feed. At the same time faba bean offers ecosystem services such as renewable inputs of nitrogen (N) into crops and soil via biological N2 fixation, and a diversification of cropping systems. Even though the global average grain yield has almost doubled during the past 50 years the total area sown to faba beans has declined by 56% over the same period. The season-to-season fluctuations in grain yield of faba bean and the progressive replacement of traditional farming systems, which utilized legumes to provide N to maintain soil N fertility, with industrialized, largely cereal-based systems that are heavily reliant upon fossil fuels (=N fertilizers, heavy mechanization) are some of the explanations for this decline in importance. Past studies of faba bean in cropping systems have tended to focus on the effect of faba bean as a pre-crop in mainly cereal intensive rotations, whereas similar information on the effect of preceding crops on faba bean is lacking. Faba bean has the highest average reliance on N2 fixation for growth of the major cool season grain legumes. As a consequence the N benefit for following crops is often high, and several studies have demonstrated substantial savings (up to 100–200 kg N ha−1) in the amount of N fertilizer required to maximize the yield of crops grown after faba bean. There is, however, a requirement to evaluate the potential risks of losses of N from the plant–soil system associated with faba bean cropping via nitrate leaching or emissions of N2O to the atmosphere as a consequence of the rapid mineralization of N from its N-rich residues. It is important to develop improved preventive measures, such as catch crops, intercropping, or no-till technologies, in order to provide farmers with strategies to minimize any possible undesirable effects on the environment that might result from their inclusion of faba bean in cropping system. This needs to be combined with research that can lead to a reduction in the current extent of yield variability, so that faba bean may prove to be a key component of future arable cropping systems where declining supplies and high prices of fossil energy are likely to constrain the affordability and use of fertilizers. This will help address the increasing demand by consumers and governments for agriculture to reduce its impact on the environment and climate through new, more sustainable approaches to food production. The aims of this paper are to review the role of faba bean in global plant production systems, the requirements for optimal faba bean production and to highlight the beneficial effects of faba bean in cropping systems. 相似文献

Fisheries management and sustainability assessment of fisheries more generally have recently expanded their scope from single‐species stock assessment to ecosystem‐based approaches, aiming to incorporate economic, social and local environmental impacts, while still excluding global‐scale environmental impacts. In parallel, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has emerged as a widely used and recommended framework to assess environmental impacts of products, including global‐scale impacts. For over a decade, LCA has been applied to seafood supply chains, leading to new insights into the environmental impact of seafood products. We present insights from seafood LCA research with particular focus on evaluating fisheries management, which strongly influences the environmental impact of seafood products. Further, we suggest tangible ways in which LCA could be taken up in management. By identifying trade‐offs, LCA can be a useful decision support tool and avoids problem shifting from one concern (or activity) to another. The integrated, product‐based and quantitative perspective brought by LCA could complement existing tools. One example is to follow up fuel use of fishing, as the production and combustion of fuel used dominates overall results for various types of environmental impacts of seafood products, and is also often linked to biological impacts of fishing. Reducing the fuel use of fisheries is therefore effective to reduce overall impacts. Allocating fishing rights based on environmental performance could likewise facilitate the transition to low‐impact fisheries. Taking these steps in an open dialogue between fishers, managers, industry, NGOs and consumers would enable more targeted progress towards sustainable fisheries. 相似文献

The commercial chemotherapeutant formulations SLICE® and AlphaMax® [active ingredients emamectin benzoate (EB) and deltamethrin respectively] are used in fin fish aquaculture to control parasitic sea lice. In some regions, the use of these substances has drawn concern from the commercial fishing industry regarding potential adverse effects on non‐target organisms. In the present work, biodegradation of EB and deltamethrin, and their commercial formulations, was investigated over 135 days at 4 and 10°C in fresh marine sediments collected from underneath an active open net‐pen salmon farm. EB incubated as either pure substance or commercial formulation was recalcitrant at both temperatures under abiotic and biotic conditions. Deltamethrin incubated alone or as its commercial formulation degraded slowly at 10°C (t1/2 = 330 ± 107 and 201 ± 27.1 days respectively). At 4°C, deltamethrin degradation was only significant following incubation as commercial formulation (t1/2 = 285 ±112 days). Degradation rates of EB and deltamethrin as pure substances versus their commercial formulations were not statistically different. Depletion of deltamethrin was observed in 10°C inactive sediments indicating that transformation occurred (at least in part) via an abiotic pathway. Overall, these data provide further insight into the fate and persistence of EB from the ongoing use of SLICE® in British Columbia's salmon aquaculture industry. AlphaMax® is not registered in Canada but is used in other salmon farming countries to control sea lice. 相似文献
