Polygonum odoratum Lour. has been reclassified as Persicaria odorata (Lour.) Soják [Wilson, K. L. Polygonum sensu lato (Polygonaceae) in Australia. Telopea 1988, 3, 177-182]; other synonyms currently used are Vietnamese mint or Vietnamese coriander and, in Malaysia, Daun Laksa or Laksa plant. The aerial parts of Laksa plant are highly aromatic, and they contain many organic compounds such as (Z)-3-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol, decanal, undecanal, and dodecanal that are typical for green, citrus, orange peel, and coriander odors. In addition to these aldehydes, 3-sulfanyl-hexanal and 3-sulfanyl-hexan-1-ol were discovered for the first time in this herb. The fresh leaves are pungent when they are chewed, although the active compound has never been identified. The pungency of Persicaria hydropiper (L.) Spach (formerly Polygonum hydropiper L., synonym water pepper) is produced by polygodial, a 1,4-dialdehyde derived from drimane terpenoids. We also identified polygodial as the active pungent compound in P. odorata (Lour.) Soják.  相似文献

Reduction of core body temperature has been proposed to contribute to the increased life span and the antiaging effects conferred by calorie restriction (CR). Validation of this hypothesis has been difficult in homeotherms, primarily due to a lack of experimental models. We report that transgenic mice engineered to overexpress the uncoupling protein 2 in hypocretin neurons (Hcrt-UCP2) have elevated hypothalamic temperature. The effects of local temperature elevation on the central thermostat resulted in a 0.3 degrees to 0.5 degrees C reduction of the core body temperature. Fed ad libitum, Hcrt-UCP2 transgenic mice had the same caloric intake as their wild-type littermates but had increased energy efficiency and a greater median life span (12% increase in males; 20% increase in females). Thus, modest, sustained reduction of core body temperature prolonged life span independent of altered diet or CR.  相似文献

Paleogenomics propels the meaning of genomic studies back through hundreds of millions of years of deep time. Now that the genome of the echinoid Strongylocentrotus purpuratus is sequenced, the operation of its genes can be interpreted in light of the well-understood echinoderm fossil record. Characters that first appear in Early Cambrian forms are still characteristic of echinoderms today. Key genes for one of these characters, the biomineralized tissue stereom, can be identified in the S. purpuratus genome and are likely to be the same genes that were involved with stereom formation in the earliest echinoderms some 520 million years ago.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to better understand the mechanisms by which proteins affect the rates of lipid oxidation in order to develop protein-stabilized emulsion delivery systems with maximal oxidative stability. This study evaluated the affect of pH and emulsifier concentration on the stability of cumene hydroperoxide in hexadecane-in-water emulsions stabilized by beta-lactoglobulin (beta-Lg). Emulsions prepared with 0.2 wt % beta-Lg (at pH 7.0) showed a 26.9% decrease in hydroperoxide concentrations 5 min after 0.25 mM ferrous ion was added to the emulsion. EDTA, but not continuous phase beta-Lg, could inhibit iron-promoted lipid hydroperoxide decomposition. Lipid hydroperoxides were more stable to iron-promoted degradation at pH values below the pI of beta-Lg, where the emulsion droplet would be cationic and thus able to repel iron away from the lipid hydroperoxides. Heating the beta-Lg-stabilized emulsions to produce a cohesive protein layer on the emulsion droplet surface did not alter the ability of iron to decompose lipid hydroperoxides. These results suggest that proteins at the interface of emulsion droplets primarily stabilize lipid hydroperoxides by electrostatically inhibiting iron-hydroperoxide interactions.  相似文献

Field-collected, prediapause northern strain plum curculio, Conotrachelus nenuphar (Herbst), adults were treated with the juvenile hormone analogue pyriproxyfen to assess effects on reproductive development. Adults of this pest have an obligate winter reproductive diapause and do not reach reproductive maturity until after spring emergence. Topical (1.0 microL) doses of 10, 1.0 and 0.1 microg microL(-1) pyriproxyfen induced oocyte development and reproductive maturation in all treated females as assessed by dissection. There was no increased mortality in treated beetles, and control insects showed no reproductive maturation. Treatment of prediapause males and females with 1.0 microg microL(-1) of topical pyriproxyfen or exposure to residues on fruit induced successful egg laying and F1 emergence; F1 pupation success in topical treatments and residue exposure was 47 and 59% respectively. Filial adults require re-exposure to initiate reproductive development. Treatment protocols with pyriproxyfen will allow researchers to culture the northern strain, instead of relying exclusively on the non-diapausing southern strain.  相似文献

Five polysaccharide fractions (AC-1, AC-2, AC-3, AC-4, and AC-5) were obtained after systemic solvent extractions and precipitations from Antrodia camphorata mycelia with yields of 2.92, 10.38, 1.65, 0.34, and 1.64%, respectively. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis showed that the distribution of mean molecular mass of the fractionated polysaccharides was in the range of 394-940 kDa. The proximate compositions from each polysaccharide fraction revealed that all fractions belonged to the category of glycoprotein, having ratios of carbohydrate/protein ranging from 0.29 to 10.79 (w/w). Glucose or galactose was the major monosaccharide in all fractions except fraction AC-2, which has a mean molecular mass of 394 kDa with lyxose as the most prominent constituent. In the evaluation of the DPPH* radical scavenging capability, fraction AC-1 and AC-2 polysaccharides showed the better capabilities, around 74.5 and 50.5%, respectively, compared to the reference control of Trolox (87.5%) at a concentration of 1 microM. In testing with macrophage RAW264.7 cells, fraction AC-2 demonstrated a rather potent anti-inflammatory capability. Furthermore, the lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production and the protein expression by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene were inhibited, respectively, in a dose-dependent (50-200 microg/mL) manner by fraction AC-2 polysaccharide.  相似文献

Lipid oxidation in dispersed lipids is prevalent at the oil-water interface where lipid hydroperoxides are decomposed into free radicals by transition metals. Free radical scavenging antioxidants are believed to be most effective in lipid dispersions when they accumulate at the oil-water interface. The surface activity of antioxidants could be increased by their conjugation to hydrocarbon chains. In this study, p-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (HPA) was conjugated with either a butyl or dodecyl group. The HPA conjugates were more effective at decreasing interfacial tension than unconjugated HPA, indicating that they were able to adsorb at lipid-water interfaces. However, free HPA was a more effective antioxidant than butyl and dodecyl conjugates in Menhaden oil-in-water emulsions as determined by both lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances. The increased antioxidant activity of free HPA could be due to its more effective free radical scavenging activity and its higher concentration in the lipid phase of oil-in-water emulsions in the presence of surfactant micelles where it can act as a chain-breaking antioxidant.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to understand whether competition for fatty acids in plant seed exudates by compost-derived seed-colonizing microbial communities could explain the suppression of plant infections initiated by sporangia of Pythium ultimum. The germination behavior of P. ultimum sporangia in response to cucumber seeds was measured to determine the impact of seed-colonizing microbes on pathogen suppression. Seed-colonizing microbial communities from municipal biosolids compost utilized cucumber seed exudates and linoleic acid in vitro, reducing the respective stimulatory activity of these elicitors to P. ultimum sporangial germination. However, when sporangia were observed directly in the spermosphere of seeds sown in the compost medium, levels of germination and sporangial emptying did not differ from the responses in sand. The percentage of aborted germ tubes was greater after incubating sporangia in compost medium for 12-h than the level of germ tube abortion when sporangia were incubated in sand. Abortion did not occur if previously germinated sporangia were supplemented with cucumber seed exudate. Furthermore, removal of cucumber seed exudate after various stages of germ tube emergence resulted in an increase in aborted germ tubes over time. Adding increasing levels of glucose directly to the compost medium alleviated germ tube abortion in the spermosphere and also eliminated disease suppression. These data fail to support a role for linoleic acid competition in Pythium seedling disease suppression but provide evidence for general carbon competition mediated by seed-colonizing microbial communities as a mechanism for the suppression of Pythium seed infections in municipal biosolids compost.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Optimisation of alginate formulations is described in order to develop semiochemical (E-β-farnesene and E-β-caryophyllene) slow-release devices in biological control approaches by attracting predators and parasitoids of aphids. Various formulation criteria were optimised with respect to semiochemical encapsulation capacity. Moreover, the optimised formulation was characterised by texturometry and confocal microscopy. The slow-release rates of semiochemicals were calculated in laboratory controlled conditions. The attractiveness of semiochemical formulations towards Aphidius ervi was demonstrated by olfactometry. RESULTS: Two major parameters were highlighted in encapsulation optimisation: the type of alginate (Sigma L) and the type of crosslinker ion (Ca2+). Other formulation parameters were optimised: ionic strength (0.5 M), Ca2+ (0.2 M) and alginate (1.5%) concentrations and the maturation time of beads in CaCl2 solution (48 h). After physical characterisation of beads, semiochemical slow-release measurements showed that alginate formulations were efficient sesquiterpene releasers, with 503 µg of E-β-farnesene and 1791 µg of E-β-caryophyllene totally released in 35 days. The efficiency of semiochemical alginate beads as attractants for female parasitoids was demonstrated, with high percentages of attraction for semiochemical odours (88 and 90% for E-β-farnesene and E-β-caryophyllene respectively) and significant statistical results. CONCLUSION: Semiochemical alginate beads can be considered as efficient slow-release systems in biological control.
