Amphibians produce defensive chemicals which provide protection against both predators and infections. Within species, populations can differ considerably in the composition and amount of these chemical defenses. Studying intraspecific variation in toxins and linking it to environmental variables may help us to identify the selective drivers of toxin evolution, such as predation pressure and infection risk. Recently, there has been a renewed interest in the unique toxins produced by salamanders from the genus Salamandra: the samandarines. Despite this attention, intraspecific variation has largely been ignored within Salamandra-species. The aim of this study was to investigate whether geographic variation in profiles of samandarines exists, by sampling 4 populations of Salamandra atra over its range in the Dinaric Alps. In addition, we preliminary explored whether potential variation could be explained by predation (counting the number of snake species) and infection risk (cultivation and genomic analyses of collected soil samples). Salamanders from the 4 populations differed in toxin composition and in the size of their poison glands, although not in overall toxin quantity. Nor predation nor infection risk could explain this variation, as populations barely differed in these variables. Sampling over a much broader geographic range, using better estimators for predation and infection risk, will contribute to an improved understanding of how environment may shape variation in chemical defenses. Nevertheless, as the 4 populations of S. atra did differ in their toxin profiles, we propose that this species provides an interesting opportunity for further ecological and evolutionary studies on amphibian toxins.  相似文献

Since 2003, the pig industry in Flanders (Belgium) is obliged to process a portion of the nutrient overproduction. In general, pig manure processing occurs as follows: i) separation into liquid and solid fractions, ii) conversion of the solid fraction to an exportable product (e.g. composting) and iii) reduction of nutrient contents in the liquid fraction before discharge into surface water or spreading on arable land. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of constructed wetlands (CWs) planted with Phragmites australis to reduce nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the liquid fraction to levels below discharge criteria. In addition, the removal efficiency of heavy metals (Cu, Zn) present at elevated levels in the liquid fraction was evaluated. A greenhouse experiment was conducted with subsurface flow (SSF) reed beds (2 × 0.125 × 0.11 m) filled with sand, loam, clayey sand or expanded clay (argex). The liquid manure load was set at 1 mm per day. Removal efficiencies varied between 64–75% for COD, 73–83% for N and 71–92% for P, depending on the matrix material used. However, effluent levels still remained significantly above the Flemish legal discharge criteria of 2 mgl?1, 15 mgl?1 and 125 mgl?1 for P, N and COD respectively.  相似文献

As a result of convenants between the Port of Rotterdam and the German Chemical Industry, the emissions in the Rhine between Basle (Switzerland) and the Dutch boarder have fallen by more than half in the past fifteen years. Recent studies have concluded that people are nowadays polluting the Rhine more than industry. This places Rotterdam’s involvement with the quality of water and the sediment of the Rhine, port and North Sea in a different perspective. As a medium-sized European municipality, Rotterdam doesn’t want to take on too much, certainly not when cross-border issues such as the quality of the North Sea and the Rhine water are concerned. Rotterdam is now trying to get other organisations to co-operate in solving this problem. A cleaner Rhine, after the success on point sources, can be achieved primarily by reducing the contamination from diffuse sources, over which the port itself has absolutely no control. Rotterdam is the homeport of Mrs. Els Kuijper. She gave a keynote lecture during the SedNet Inaugural Conference, April 22–23, 2002, which forms the basis of this article. Mrs. Kuijper is the vice-mayor and environmental alderman of Rotterdam.  相似文献

Tobacco plants that are somatic mosaics for expression of a cytokinin-synthesizing gene have viviparous leaves. Such a formation of shoots in an abnormal position represents a significant deviation from the usual organization of the plant body where a central axis produces shoots only in the axils of lateral leaf appendages and according to a precise phyllotactic pattern. Visual (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was applied to discriminate bruises and non-bruised healthy spots on ‘Golden Delicious’ apples. Two types of bruises were examined; those created by controlled impact and those by compression. Reflectance spectra of apples were measured in the range from 400 to 1700 nm. The data were analysed with canonical discriminant analysis (CDA). The squared canonical correlation (CR2) was 0.74 for discriminating impact bruises and non-bruised tissue, and a CR2 of 0.68 was obtained for distinguishing compression bruises and sound tissue. Based on the linear discriminant functions, built with canonical components, the misclassification errors for non-bruised apples were mainly due to the presence of compression bruises. The classification accuracy was improved by taking the type of bruises into account in the model.  相似文献

Infections with helminths are a major health issue in captive and wild deer. In this study, fecal egg count patterns and clinical signs associated with gastrointestinal nematodes were assessed for 12 mo in nine cervid herds kept under different husbandry conditions at two sites. At site 1, an urban zoo, fecal egg counts remained low and no clinical signs of parasitic gastroenteritis were seen in the herds of fallow deer (Dama dama), Dybowski's deer (Cervus nippon dybowski), pudu (Pudu pudu), and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Helminth infection at this site may have been successfully prevented by daily dung removal of the small sandy-soil enclosures, and applying routine anthelmintic treatment was not justified. At site 2, a wild animal park, involved species were red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus), Nelson's elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus), European elk (Alces alces alces), and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Nematode eggs were frequently encountered in herds of red deer, Nelson's elk, and European elk, which were kept on larger, grassy enclosures that were irregularly cleaned. The trimodal pattern of fecal egg counts in herds from the wild animal park, consisting of a small spring rise in June, a peak in October, and a small rise in February, indicates that infective larvae on pastures are the main source of infection. In addition, routine anthelmintic treatment with fenbendazole in April and July limited egg shedding, but reinfection rapidly occurred. In two European elk and one reindeer, increasing fecal egg counts were associated with loss of fecal consistency and reduced appetite. Three genera and three species of nematodes were recovered at necropsy of one red deer and three Nelson's elk: Spiculopteragia spiculoptera, Trichostrongylus spp., Nematodirus filicollis, Capillaria spp., Oesophagostomum radiatum, and Trichuris spp., with total worm counts between 950 and 8,700.  相似文献

The existing diversity within poultry systems affects the potential risk of infectious disease introduction and spread. Population data on the level of biosecurity and between-farm contacts is scarce, despite its importance for identifying possible routes of disease transmission. A study was carried out in Belgium to investigate and differentiate professional and hobby poultry sites based on their biosecurity levels and farm movements. Questionnaire data from a total of 37 professional poultry farms, 19 hatcheries and 286 hobby poultry sites were analyzed using a combination of a linear scoring system, a Categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA) and a Two-Step cluster analysis (TSCA). In general, the level of biosecurity was lower in hobby poultry flocks, mainly due to the poor confinement against the outdoor environment and the poor infrastructural hygiene. Most Belgian professional poultry farms and hatcheries had an acceptable level of adoption of standard biosecurity practices, however less attention was given to the way transportation vehicles and employers were brought onto farms and professional visitors welcomed. Considerable variation in the movements and in the structure of the networks arising from these movements was found. Movement frequencies were higher at professional farms compared to hobby farms. Results showed that multiple category farming systems had the highest total movement frequencies. Monthly frequencies of professional visits often exceeded those of poultry and egg movements. Professional and hobby poultry sites were also connected, but movements of poultry and eggs were found only to occur from professional to hobby sites. However, hobby poultry keepers were personally purchasing the poultry and eggs on the professional poultry sites. Six groups of poultry sites were differentiated, which are interpreted as very low to very high risk groups, based on the potential of infectious disease introduction and spread.  相似文献

This is the second part of a two-part review of the structures and disorders of the equine tarsus. In this part the bones of the tarsal region are considered and the technical aspects of taking radiographic, ultrasonographic and scintigraphic images of the different lesions are addressed. The diagnostic use of arthroscopy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance are discussed. The structure of the lignin in the cortex and pith of elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) stems was studied both in situ and in isolated milled "wood" lignins by several analytical methods. The presence of p-coumarate and ferulate in the cortex and pith, as well as in their isolated lignins, was revealed by pyrolysis in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide, and by 2D NMR, and indicated that ferulate acylates the carbohydrates while p-coumarate acylates the lignin polymer. 2D NMR showed a predominance of alkyl aryl ether (β-O-4') linkages (82% of total interunit linkages), with low amounts of "condensed" substructures, such as resinols (β-β'), phenylcoumarans (β-5'), and spirodienones (β-1'). Moreover, the NMR also indicated that these lignins are extensively acylated at the γ-carbon of the side chain. DFRC analyses confirmed that p-coumarate groups acylate the γ-OHs of these lignins, and predominantly on syringyl units.  相似文献
