Portal vein aneurysm (PVA) is a rare abnormal dilatation of the portal vein, which has not been reported in dogs. We describe the findings of ultrasound and computed tomography in a case of PVA in a young male toy poodle, with the final diagnosis established by explorative surgical observation. The dog had an aneurysmal fusiform dilatation in the extrahepatic portal vein with portal hypertension and multiple portsystemic shunts. This is the first report of canine PVA.  相似文献

Changes in the somal growth and dendritic patterns of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) were studied in early chick embryos and post-hatching chicks by means of the retrograde axonal transport labeling with DiI. Branching patterns of the dendrites were relatively uniform on E8 (embryonic day 8) and became more complicated on E11. Variety of the branching pattern became plainly abundant after E14. On the other hand, somata of RGCs continued to grow until E14, corresponding the appearance of the central-peripheral gradient of the somal size. After E14, RGCs elaborated on the formation of the dendritic patterns as found in chick retina, and simultaneously the growth of somal sizes almost ceased.  相似文献

The smell of food is one of the most important factors in assessing its quality. Concerning the smell of dried shiitake mushrooms [Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler], 1,2,3,5,6-pentathiepane, commonly known as lenthionine, has been reported as a key compound. However, other compounds have not been studied sufficiently in connection with smell. From the results of sensory intensity studies and sensory evaluations of dried shiitake mushrooms, a positive significant correlation at 1% risk was observed between sensory intensity and sulfur perception. This showed that the smell of dried shiitake mushrooms was characterized by a sulfurous smell. Also, comparing the sensory intensity with the amounts of volatile components showed positive significant correlations at 1% risk between sensory intensity and three compounds: 1,2,4-trithiolane, 1,2,4,6-tetrathiepane, and lenthionine. Furthermore, significant correlations at 5% risk were obtained between the amounts of these three compounds and sensory intensity by multiple regression analysis. This showed that the smell of dried shiitake mushrooms depended on these compounds. The partial regression coefficient of 1,2,4-trithiolane was larger than those of the others, and so it was proposed that 1,2,4-trithiolane could serve as an indicator to estimate the smell of dried shiitake mushroom.  相似文献

Genetic parameters for the efficiency of gain traits on 380 boars and the genetic relationships with component traits were estimated in 1,642 pigs (380 boars, 868 gilts, and 394 barrows) in 7 generations of a Duroc population. The efficiency of gain traits included the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) and their component traits, ADG, metabolic BW (MWT), and daily feed intake (FI). The RFI was calculated as the difference between the actual and expected FI. The expected FI was predicted by the nutritional requirement and by the residual of phenotypic (RFI(phe)) and genetic (RFI(gen)) regressions from the multivariate analysis for FI on MWT and ADG. The means for RFI(phe) and RFI(gen) were close to zero, and the mean for nutritional RFI was negative (-0.11 kg/d). The traits studied were moderately heritable (ranging from 0.27 to 0.53). The genetic and phenotypic correlations between ADG and FI were moderate to high, whereas the genetic correlation between MWT and FI was moderate, and the phenotypic correlation between them was low. The corresponding correlations between RFI(phe) and RFI(gen) were > 0.95, implying that they can be regarded as the same trait. The genetic and phenotypic correlations of FCR with measures of RFI were high but lower than unity. The RFI(phe) was phenotypically independent of its component traits, MWT (r(p) = 0.01) and ADG (r(p) = 0.03). The RFI(gen) was genetically independent of MWT (r(g) = -0.04), whereas there was a weak genetic relationship (r(g) = 0.15) between RFI(gen) and ADG. Residual FI was more heritable than FCR, and the genetic and phenotypic correlations of RFI(phe) and RFI(gen) with FI were positive and stronger than that of FCR with FI. These results provide evidence that RFI(phe) or RFI(gen) should be included in breeding programs for Duroc pigs to make genetic improvement in the efficiency of gain.  相似文献

Pathologic and immunohistochemical changes caused by group I of the fowl adenovirus (FAV) serotype-1 99ZH strain, isolated from broiler chickens exhibiting gizzard erosion, were investigated in commercial broiler chickens. One hundred twenty-two chickens were inoculated with the strain by both oral and ocular routes at 1, 3, or 5 weeks of age and euthanatized for necropsy within 4-18 days of inoculation. Focal gizzard erosions were observed in the inoculated chickens of each age group. A histologically degenerative koilin layer, necrotic mucosa, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the glandular epithelial cells, inflammatory cell infiltrations in the lamina propria, submucosa, and a muscle layer were seen in the gizzards. Immunohistochemical staining showed evidence of FAV antigens in the intranuclear inclusion bodies. These findings were recognized regardless of their maternal antibody levels for FAV serotype-1. Gizzard lesions appeared later in the lower-dose-inoculated chickens than in the higher-dose-inoculated chickens. Numerous CD3-positive cells and IgY-positive plasma cells were seen in the gizzard lesions. In 5-week-old chickens the heterophil infiltrations in the lesions were milder than in younger chickens. Intranuclear inclusion bodies also were observed in the epithelial cells of the ileum or cecal tonsils of some chickens. Thus, this study shows that FAV-99ZH causes adenoviral gizzard erosion in broiler chickens without hepatic or pancreatic lesions and that cell infiltration is more severe than in dietary gizzard erosions.  相似文献

Experimental shifting cultivation was conducted at the Balai Ringin (B. Ringin) and Sabal sites in Sarawak, Malaysia. At the sites, plots (10 x 10 m2) were burned with the fuel of aboveground biomass amounting to 0 (control), 100, 200, and 300 Mg ha-1. At the B. Ringin site, the soils were clayey and strongly weathered with a strongly acidic characteristic. Ash addition enabled to alleviate the soil acidity and to increase the amounts of nutrients of the soils, especially the surface soils. It was indicated that 1) N addition from ash to the soils was negligible, 2) the losses of nutrients by runoff water were not substantial compared with the amounts of nutrients contained in ash, 3) ash alkalinity seemed to be consumed for inactivating exchangeable AI mainly in the surface soils, and 4) development of variable negative charges could contribute to the retention of inorganic bases derived from ash. After harvest of upland rice, the soil chemical properties in the plots treated with 100 and 200 Mg ha-1 fuel returned to the levels before burning, indicating the rapid loss of nutrients due to leaching and erosion as well as the uptake by plants. However, the soils treated with 300 Mg ha-1 fuel still showed high contents of exchangeable bases and a low content of exchangeable AI. On the other hand, the soils at the Sabal site were sandy and were characterized by a very low nutrient status. The changes in the amounts of nutrients by ash addition were similar to those at the B. Ringin site. However, the changes in the level of exchangeable AI which were not appreciable were probably due to the low AI content. It was postulated that because of the sandy texture and low CEC of the soils, inorganic bases contained in ash were only suspended in the soil solution. Taking into account the low yield of rice and low level of secondary biomass, it appeared that most of the nutrients were lost downward in soils by leaching.  相似文献

Sustainable land management of smallholder farms is crucial for ensuring food security in sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about the nutrient dynamics of smallholder farming systems at the farm level based on primary data. In this study, carbon (C) and nutrient budgets of the home garden system in the Kilimanjaro highlands, where Andosols predominate, were quantified at the farmer's field. We evaluated (1) the soil C and nutrient flow in the main three land-use blocks (banana (Musa spp.) garden, maize (Zea mays L.) field and grassland) in one representative home garden and (2) the internal flow between farmland and livestock and the external nutrient flow across the inside and outside of the six home gardens. Intensive applications of livestock dung to the banana trees resulted in a positive C budget (7.2 Mg C ha−1 year−1) in the banana garden. Nitrogen loss through the harvesting of feed and crops was almost balanced with the livestock dung application, while nitrogen loss through leaching only accounted for 3% of that applied. Banana productivity has been maintained despite a negative potassium budget (−241 kg K ha−1 year−1), probably owing to the replenished exchangeable potassium from Andosols. In the maize field, the C budget was negative (−1.7 Mg C ha−1 year−1) owing to high organic matter decomposition. Carbon and nutrient budgets in the grassland were all negative. Our results revealed that the village average livestock density (4.4 TLU ha−1: TLU means tropical livestock unit) was sufficient for P, Ca and Mg balance in the home garden, whereas it was not sufficient for N and K balance. Increasing livestock density improved the nutrient balance of the system. However, it is noteworthy that 33%–47% of the feed supplied as C and nutrients was collected from outside the home gardens, suggesting a high reliance on external inflow to fulfil feed demands. In conclusion, intensive livestock dung application to banana cultivation was fundamental for maintaining agricultural productivity to replenish the nutrients lost from the system. At the same time, this system was sustained not only by C and nutrient cycling within the system, but also by transporting resources from the external environment into the system.  相似文献

Somatic cell cloning is expected to be a valuable method for conserving genetic resources in pigs. In this study, we compared the reproductive and growth performance of Jin Hua cloned pigs with that of naturally bred Jin Hua pigs. In addition, we generated offspring from the cloned sows and examined the productivity and quality of meat in the progeny. The birth weights and growth rates of somatic cell-cloned pigs were similar to those of Jin Hua pigs. The cloned pigs reached puberty very early, and this is typical of the Jin Hua breed. Furthermore, reproductive performance, in terms of traits such as gestation period, litter size, and raising rate in the cloned pigs were similar to Jin Hua pigs. Although the offspring of the cloned (OC) pigs had lower birth weights than the Jin Hua breed, the daily weight gain of the OC pigs was significantly higher, especially at the finishing stage. The carcass quality of the OC pigs had similar characteristics to the Jin Hua breed, namely thick back fat and a small loin area. Furthermore, the meat qualities of the OC pigs were similar to those of Jin Hua pigs in terms of intramuscular fat content and tenderness. These results demonstrate that cloned pigs and their offspring were similar to the Jin Hua breed in most of the growth, reproductive, and meat productive performances. This strongly suggests that pigs cloned from somatic cell nuclei have the potential to be a valuable genetic resource for breeding.  相似文献
