Unlike most of its close relatives, Arabidopsis thaliana is capable of self-pollination. In other members of the mustard family, outcrossing is ensured by the complex self-incompatibility (S) locus,which harbors multiple diverged specificity haplotypes that effectively prevent selfing. We investigated the role of the S locus in the evolution of and transition to selfing in A. thaliana. We found that the S locus of A. thaliana harbored considerable diversity, which is an apparent remnant of polymorphism in the outcrossing ancestor. Thus, the fixation of a single inactivated S-locus allele cannot have been a key step in the transition to selfing. An analysis of the genome-wide pattern of linkage disequilibrium suggests that selfing most likely evolved roughly a million years ago or more.  相似文献

The emerging concept of food sovereignty refers to the right of communities, peoples, and states to independently determine their own food and agricultural policies. It raises the question of which type of food production, agriculture and rural development should be pursued to guarantee food security for the world population. Social movements and non-governmental organizations have readily integrated the concept into their terminology. The concept is also beginning to find its way into the debates and policies of UN organizations and national governments in both developing and industrialized countries. Beyond its relation to civil society movements little academic attention has been paid to the concept of food sovereignty and its appropriateness for international development policies aimed at reducing hunger and poverty, especially in comparison to the human right to adequate food (RtAF). We analyze, on the basis of an extensive literature review, the concept of food sovereignty with regard to its ability to contribute to hunger and poverty reduction worldwide as well as the challenges attached to this concept. Then, we compare the concept of food sovereignty with the RtAF and discuss the appropriateness of both concepts for national public sector policy makers and international development policies. We conclude that the impact on global food security is likely to be much greater if the RtAF approach predominated public policies. While the concept of food sovereignty may be appropriate for civil society movements, we recommend that the RtAF should obtain highest priority in national and international agricultural, trade and development policies.  相似文献

Widespread anticoagulant resistance was discovered in populations of the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus Berk.) in an area of roughly 8000 km2 in north-west Germany. Resistance testing was performed by feeding tests and/or by measuring blood clotting response after intraperitoneal injection of a sublethal testing solution. A hierarchical resistance system was found with warfarin resistance at the base followed by bromadiolone/coumatetralyl resistance to difenacoum resistance at the top. Warfarin resistance was spread over the whole area with reduced incidence towards the edges. Difenacoum resistance represented the highest level found so far and was restricted to the inner zone of the resistance area where it occurred with a frequency of 6% of all individuals tested. Breeding experiments with bromadiolone-resistant rats showed that expression of the bromadiolone resistance gene differed in the two sexes, suggesting additional sex-linked modifying effects to the resistance gene. Control strategy within the resistance area with respect to prevention of further selection for resistance is discussed.  相似文献

Soil organic‐carbon (SOC) stocks are expected to increase after conversion of cropland into grassland. Two adjacent cropland and grassland sites—one with a Vertisol with 23 y after conversion and one with an Arenosol 29 y after conversion—were sampled down to 60 cm depth. Concentrations of SOC and total nitrogen (Ntot) were measured before and after density fractionation in two light fractions and a mineral‐associated fraction with C adsorbed on mineral surfaces. For the soil profiles, SOC stocks and radiocarbon (14C) concentrations of mineral associated C were determined. Carbon stocks and mineral‐associated SOC concentrations were increased in the upper 10 cm of the grassland soil compared to the cropland. This corresponded to the root‐biomass distribution, with 59% and 86% of the total root biomass at 0–5 cm soil depth of the grasslands. However, at the Arenosol site, at 10–20 cm depth, C in the mineral‐associated fraction was lost 29 y after the conversion into grassland. Over all, SOC stocks were not significantly different between grassland and cropland at both sites when the whole profile was taken into account. At the Arenosol site, the impact of land‐use conversion on SOC accumulation was limited by low total clay surface area available for C stabilization. Subsoil C (30–50 cm) at cropland of the Vertisol site comprised 32% of the total SOC stocks with high 14C concentrations below the plowing horizon. We concluded that fresh C was effectively translocated into the subsoil. Thus, subsoil C has to be taken into account when land‐use change effects on SOC are assessed.  相似文献

In recent years, laser rangefinder sensors have been introduced to the practice and research of agricultural engineering. In research, laser rangefinders have been investigated in horticulture and agriculture. For vehicle-based determination of crop biomass, commercially available laser rangefinders have been analysed and tested to measure aboveground biomass in oilseed rape, winter rye, winter wheat, oats and grassland. Resulting from limited measuring range and fixed beam types, the laser rangefinder models that were investigated only partially met the specific demands for agricultural field and crop conditions. Therefore, a new laser rangefinder scanner (ibeo-ALASCA XT) was chosen. This sensor was specifically developed for driver assistance and autonomous guiding of road vehicles. The scanner was tested in 2008 focusing on the measurement of crop stand parameters in winter wheat under field conditions. The sensor achieved good results with reproducible measurements. Measuring from a stationary vehicle, the standard deviation for the measurements of crop height to characterise the crop stand was less than 3 mm in low, medium, and high biomass areas. The ground speed of the vehicle, ranging from 6 to 24 km h?1, did not significantly influence the readings. For measurements in front of tractors and self-propelled machines (field sprayers, combines and forage harvesters), the sensor has to scan the crop stands at different inclination angles. It was shown that the inclination angle of the laser beam, which varied from 10° to 80°, significantly influenced the readings. Higher inclination angles resulted in apparent increased heights of the crop stand. For the functional relationship between reflection height levels (95th, 75th, 50th and 25th percentiles, and mean values) and crop biomass density, the coefficient of determination (R2) was greater than 0.9.  相似文献

The potential impact of transgenic crops on community ecology will depend on the distribution and establishment of the new transgenic traits, on the sexual transfer of their new genes to the environment (Bartsch &; Pohl-Orf, 1996) and on the potential ecological impact of the transgenic trait. Flowering and pollen dispersal is important for outcrossing of the genetically engineered trait. For a biennial plant, like the cultivars of Beta vulgaris L., overwintering is normally necessary to become generative and to produce pollen and seeds (Abe et al., 1997), which usually does not happen with sugar beet as a field crop harvested in autumn (Longden 1989). The starting point for the project was a transgenic sugar beet, Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris (Lange et al., 1998), with rhizomania and herbicide ( Basta®, Liberty®) resistance. Cold tolerance is one of the most important factors for survival of sugar beet in Central- and North-Europe. Among other ways, spreading of transgenic traits into weed beet (Boudry et al., 1993) or wild beet can occur if genetically engineered – biennial – plants survive the winter, flower in spring and spread their pollen. Field experiments were performed with transgenic breeding lines and their hybrids, transgenic and non-transgenic hybrids with Swiss chard and three conventional beet cultivars to evaluate winter survival rates at seven different field sites. We could show that survival of sugar beet – transgenic as well as conventional ones – in Germany and at the Dutch border is possible. Survival rates were well correlated with temperature data and were unexpectedly high. Differences between sugar beet hybrids and breeding lines could be detected but not within different breeding lines or hybrids. There were no differences detectable between transgenic and non-transgenic plants. The data are crucial for the risk assessment of the release of transgenic sugar beet and are the basis for further experiments towards outcrossing and establishment.  相似文献

The effects of ovariectomy, ovariohysterectomy and hysterectomy on morphologically demonstrable characteristics of lymphoid organs, peripheral white blood cell counts and antibody production against sheep red blood cells (SRBC) were studied in female Lewis rats. Removal of ovaries induced enlarged thymus weight and cellularity. No differences were observed between the groups in spleen weight, while hysterectomy together with ovariectomy influenced relative uterus draining lymph node (UDLN) weight. The percent numbers of pan T, helper T lymphocytes, cytotoxic/suppressor T cells and IgG bearing cells (B lymphocytes) of all investigated organs showed only moderate changes caused by the surgical procedures. In contrast, removal of ovaries generated elevated total leukocyte and lymphocyte counts in peripheral blood. The changes in absolute blood lymphocyte counts were accompanied by similar variations in absolute T and B lymphocyte numbers. Ovariohysterectomy had slightly greater effects on these parameters than ovariectomy alone. In addition, ovaries and uterus had only moderate influences on systemic immune responses toward SRBC. In conclusion, the present results indicate that the removal of ovaries and uterus can modify morphological characteristics of lymphoid organs and peripheral blood but antibody production showed only moderate changes caused by the surgical procedures.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of internal tibial rotation on the computed tomographic (CT) and standard radiographic assessment of tibial torsion (TT) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: In vitro study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cadaveric canine hind limbs (6 pairs). METHODS: The cranial cruciate ligament was transected, and caudo-cranial radiographic and transverse CT images were obtained with the femur and tibiae in a neutral position, and after 15 degrees internal tibial rotation. Radiographic TT was determined by measuring the distance (d) between the calcaneus and the sulcus of the talus. CT determination of TT was performed using the proximal transcondylar and the distal cranial tibial axes. The distance (d) in the 2 groups and the difference in the CT determination of TT between groups were compared with a hypothetical mean value of 0 mm and 0 degrees, respectively. RESULTS: The mean distance (d) for the neutral radiographic group was not significantly different from 0 (P=.473); however, for the 15 degree group it was significantly different (P<.0001). The difference in the CT determination of TT did not differ from 0 (P=.317). CONCLUSION: The standard radiographic technique does not discriminate between internal TT and internal rotation of the tibia. Thus, dogs with normal tibial conformation can be depicted by radiography as torsed, whereas dogs with TT may be misinterpreted as normal because of arbitrary positioning. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lateral displacement of the medial border of the calcaneus on a caudo-cranial radiograph should not be used as the sole arbiter of TT before surgical correction.  相似文献
