A key aspect of any sulfur (S) availability indicator is its stability throughout the crop cycle. Nine experiments were conducted with the objective to evaluate the stability of the nitrogen (N):S ratio in aerial biomass (W) in spring wheat, and to define the critical curve of S dilution. As the crop cycle progressed, a decrease (P < 0.05) in total N:S was determined. This lack of stability was explained by a lower S dilution in relation to N (P < 0.05). A decrease (P < 0.05) in N accumulation rate in relation to S was obtained as the crop cycle progressed, which points out that S accumulation in relation to N is later. A first approach was determined to the definition of the S dilution critical curve (Sc) from tillering beginning to stem elongation end (Sc = 0.37 W?0.169; r2 = 0.71 and n = 24).  相似文献

Purpose

In order to assess sediment quality and to account for the great geochemical heterogeneity of Italian coasts, Local Sediment Quality Guidelines (LSQGs) have to be defined for specific portions of the coastline based on the approach developed by ICRAM–APAT (2007). This paper describes the application of LSQGs to the harbour of Fiumicino (Rome, Italy). The aims were to evaluate the quality of dredging sediments through an integrated chemical–ecotoxicological approach and to define suitable management options.

Materials and methods

Thirty-eight sediment cores, covering the planned dredging depth, were collected in the study area and sliced into 92 sediment samples. Chemical analyses, including inorganic and organic contaminants as well as microbiological parameters, were carried out for all the samples. A bioassay battery composed by the bacterium Vibrio fischeri, the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus and the alga Dunaliella tertiolecta was applied on one third of the samples. LSQGs were derived from chemical and ecotoxicological data of the harbour area, and were integrated with those from the identified dumping site. The Baseline Chemical Level, corresponding to an absent or unlikely ecotoxicological hazard, and the Limit Chemical Level, corresponding to a probable ecotoxicological hazard, were the LSQGs derived for each chemical.

Results and discussion

A gradient of increasing contamination, moving inland due to urban and agricultural effluents, was observed. Ecotoxicological analyses, similar to microbiological ones, confirmed the poor sediment quality, with the exception of a sample located at the port entrance, where hydrodynamics flush sediment away from the site. Principal component analysis allowed a clear discrimination of three areas, each affected by a different contamination degree and influenced by many sources related to industrial, commercial and/or urban activities. Using LSQGs and the results of bioassays, it was possible to classify the sediment quality of the whole harbour area and to define the most suitable management options. It was found that Fiumicino harbour sediment was not suitable for either beach nourishment or for offshore dumping, with the exception of a negligible amount located at the port entrance. In turn, most sediment seemed to be suitable for disposal in a properly sealed confined disposal facility or for mechanical/chemical treatment.

Conclusions

This case study provided useful insights for implementing the development of LSQGs for more realistic sediment management and will assist in promoting its application to harbour dredging at the local level.  相似文献

Here, we propose a new approach to determine the level of plant N nutrition, based on the relationship between chlorophyll meter (CM) readings and total biomass in potato plants. The objectives of this work were i) to determine the critical curve CM (CMc) readings; ii) to establish the relationship between N nutrition index of CM (NNICM), and relative tuber yields (RY), and iii) to establish the crop N required (NR). The experiments were carried out during four growing seasons. The cultivar Innovator was planted in a randomized complete block design with three replications and four N treatments (N0, N1, N2 y N3) to cover the range from deficient through surplus N. The CM reading was assessed with the Minolta SPAD 502 at different times during each growing season. The NNICM was determined as the ratio between the actual CM reading (CMa) and the CMc. The NR was determined as the difference between actual N uptake and the critical N uptake, divided the N utilization efficiency. The CMc for cultivar innovator was determined [CMc?=?51.4 W (Mg ha_1)?0.13; R2?=?0.83]. The NNICM ranged from 0.78 to 1.17. The relation between RY and NNICM was expressed as a linear-plateau function. For NNICM ≥0.9, the RY was near 98.0 %, whereas for NNICM below 0.9, the RY decreased [RY?=?7.73?+?100.0 NNICM; R2?=?0.55]. The relationship between the observed N uptake and the estimated N uptake values showed positive significant associations (p?<?0.0001). We conclude that the CM reading can be used as an easy and fast tool to predict NR in potato plants under field conditions during the vegetative growth period.  相似文献

Domestication is an evolutionary process that modifies morphological, physiological, chemical and genetic features of wild plants, and is a product of artificial selection. A gradient of domestication can be appreciated in species of the Opuntia genus. There are wild species like O. streptacantha, others semi-domesticated like O. hyptiacantha O. megacantha and O. albicarpa, or other like O. ficus-indica with the highest degree of domestication. At the same time, some structural polysaccharides have been associated with plant drought and freeze resistance. This study aimed at quantify five groups of structural polysaccharides in 14 variants of nopalitos (edible young cladodes of flat-stemmed spiny cacti consumed as vegetables) of Opuntia spp. in a domestication gradient. Given that extreme environment is less frequent under cultivation than in the wild, we hypothesized that structural polysaccharides in nopalitos are reduced throughout the domestication process. The experiment was conducted as a completely randomized design with a 5?×?14 two-factor factorial treatment structure, with four replications. Mucilages, pectins, hemicelluloses and cellulose were extracted and dietary fiber content was calculated. ANOVA of data was performed, pair wise comparisons of species and variants were conducted by Tukey test and principal components analysis was carried out. Mucilages were higher in O. ficus-indica (12% of total dry mass) and pectins, loosely and tightly bound hemicelluloses in O. streptacantha (2.5, 9 and 3%, respectively). All five species had similar content of cellulose (5.1% dry mass); but, O. streptacantha presented more dietary fiber. Higher pectins and both loosely and tightly bound hemicelluloses content in wild species can be related to genotype and the persistence of reaction to a wild environment. Mucilages which are one of the main characteristics of consumer preference and loosely bound hemicelluloses could have impact for selection during Opuntia domestication.  相似文献

β-chitin was isolated from marine waste, giant Humboldt squid Dosidicus gigas, and further converted to nanofibers by use of a collider machine under acidic conditions (pH 3). The FTIR, TGA, and NMR analysis confirmed the efficient extraction of β-chitin. The SEM, TEM, and XRD characterization results verified that β-chitin crystalline structure were maintained after mechanical treatment. The mean particle size of β-chitin nanofibers was in the range between 10 and 15 nm, according to the TEM analysis. In addition, the β-chitin nanofibers were converted into films by the simple solvent-casting and drying process at 60 °C. The obtained films had high lightness, which was evidenced by the CIELAB color test. Moreover, the films showed the medium swelling degree (250–290%) in aqueous solutions of different pH and good mechanical resistance in the range between 4 and 17 MPa, depending on film thickness. The results obtained in this work show that marine waste can be efficiently converted to biomaterial by use of mild extractive conditions and simple mechanical treatment, offering great potential for the future development of sustainable multifunctional materials for various industrial applications such as food packaging, agriculture, and/or wound dressing.  相似文献

Biological control agents like Bacillus subtilis offer an alternative and supplement to synthetic pesticides. Antibiotic production by biocontrol strains of B. subtilis can play a major role in plant disease suppression. Our current understanding of B. subtilis antibiosis comes from culture media measurements of antibiotic production and in vitro suppression of pathogens. Quantifying the antibiotic metabolite chemistry of B. subtilis biofilms growing on root surfaces provides a more accurate understanding of in vivo antibiotic production. An analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectroscopy (MS) has been developed to quantify antibiotics produced by B. subtilis growing on plant roots. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) was grown in composted soil and potting media inoculated with B. subtilis strain QST 713 (AgraQuest, USA). Two important B. subtilis antibiotics, surfactin and iturin A, were extracted from root and rhizosphere soil using acidified organic solvents followed by cleaning and concentration using SPE. HPLC and HPLC-MS were used to measure surfactin and iturin A. Rhizosphere concentrations of both antibiotics increased with plant age. For plants grown in peat-based potting media, surfactin concentrations increased from 9 μg g−1 root fresh weight (RFW) at 15 d to 30 μg g−1 RFW at 43 d. Iturin concentrations were 7 μg g−1 RFW at 15 d and 180 μg g−1 RFW at 43 d. In an initial field trial in a composted fine sandy loam, we demonstrated rhizosphere production of surfactin and iturin under competition and predation by the myriad macro- and microfauna existing in a fertile high-organic soil, with mature B. subtilis-inoculated cucumber roots yielding 33 μg g−1 RFW surfactin and 630 μg g−1 RFW iturin at 78 d.  相似文献

The objective was to evaluate water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) and crude protein (CP) concentration of perennial ryegrass (PRG) cultivars with different genetic potential for producing WSC under two contrasting agronomic managements in temperate climate (southern Chile). A 4 × 2 factorial design was randomly allocated to 24 plots (31 m2 each, three blocks): four PRG cultivars (diploid standard cultivar, “2nSt”; tetraploid standard cultivar, “4nSt”; diploid high sugar cultivar developed in New Zealand, “2nHSNZ”; and tetraploid high sugar cultivar developed in Europe, “4nHSEU”) and two agronomic managements (“favourable,” defoliations at three leaves per tiller and nitrogen (N) fertilization rate of 83.3 kg N ha?1 year?1; “unfavourable,” defoliations at two leaves per tiller and N fertilization rate of 250 kg N ha?1 year?1). Herbage samples were collected in early spring, spring, summer and autumn. Concentration of WSC did not differ among cultivars in spring and summer, averaging 194 and 251 g/kg DM, respectively. The cultivar 4nHSEU had the greatest WSC concentration in early spring and autumn (187 and 266 g/kg DM, respectively) and the greatest CP concentration across samplings (average 230 g/kg DM). Favourable management improved WSC concentrations in early spring and summer and decreased CP in spring, summer and autumn. Annual DM yield did not vary with cultivar or management, averaging 8.43 t/ha. Within a 12‐month study at one site in a temperate environment in southern Chile, PRG cultivars have not shown a consistent expression of the “high sugar” trait, where a genetic × environment interaction might be operating.  相似文献

Key message

Loblolly pine ( Pinus taeda ) logs can be evaluated using acoustic velocity whereby threshold acoustic velocity values can be set to ensure lumber meets specified mechanical property design values for modulus of elasticity.

Context

There is a need to better sort logs according to lumber quality for improved decision making and wood utilization because merchantable logs are being harvested from different stand types including natural forests, conventional plantations, and intensively managed plantations, all with differences in rotation ages, growth rates, and wood quality traits.

Aims

This study aimed to link tree- and lumber-length log acoustic velocity with the resulting lumber properties as tested in static bending from five intensively managed loblolly pine stands in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of Georgia.

Methods

Acoustic velocity was measured using the resonance-based approach on 87 tree-length logs and 244 lumber-length logs. The logs were then processed into 797 pieces of 38 mm by 89 mm (2×4), 140 mm (2×6), 184 mm (2×8), and 235 mm (2×10) dimension lumber, dried, and tested in static bending.

Results

Mean MOE of the lumber had moderate relationships with acoustic velocity of the logs (R 2 = 0.49) whereas MOR and acoustic velocity did not have a strong relationship (R 2 = 0.20). Accounting for log position increased the performance of the mean lumber MOE model (R 2 = 0.62) which was further increased by adding green density and small-end diameter (R 2 = 0.67). Utilization of acoustics was effective for segregating logs based on lumber modulus of elasticity and did not depend on knowing tree or stand information such as age, site quality, and silviculture history.

Conclusion

Acoustic velocity evaluation of tree- and lumber-length logs could be employed to segregate logs within the supply chain to ensure that lumber would meet specified design values.

Genomes of animals as different as sponges and humans show conservation of global architecture. Here we show that multiple genomic features including transposon diversity, developmental gene repertoire, physical gene order, and intron-exon organization are shattered in the tunicate Oikopleura, belonging to the sister group of vertebrates and retaining chordate morphology. Ancestral architecture of animal genomes can be deeply modified and may therefore be largely nonadaptive. This rapidly evolving animal lineage thus offers unique perspectives on the level of genome plasticity. It also illuminates issues as fundamental as the mechanisms of intron gain.  相似文献
