Rootstocks for stone fruit varieties differentially influence tree physiology and one possible explanation for these differences is that varieties vary in their response to root zone temperature (RZT). To examine the effects of RZT, two trials using actively growing plants of five different Prunus rootstocks with chill requirements between 100 and 1100 h were undertaken. Plants were grown at RZTs of 5, 13 and 19 °C for 6 weeks after which total dry matter accumulation and its partitioning amongst roots, stems and leaves was determined. In general, the magnitude of total dry matter and its component parts positively correlated with RZT and significant differences were found among varieties in the magnitude of total dry matter accumulation. Individual varieties ranked differently at the three RZTs with respect to total dry matter: in general, the same ranking was also seen in the ranking of each growth component. RZT significantly influenced partitioning causing differences in leaf, stem and root mass ratios. These differences were greatest at low RZTs and became less as RZT increased. Several patterns of partitioning were found. Firstly, the low chill varieties (Okinawa and Flordagold) were little affected by RZT with similar partitioning occurring at each RZT. Secondly, the higher chill varieties, Green Leaf Nemaguard (GL), Golden Queen (GQ) and Fay Elberta (FE), reacted more strongly to RZT and were particularly affected by the lowest RZT. For these varieties, the root mass ratio rose and stem mass ratio fell as RZT increased. However, with respect to leaf mass ratio, two different trends were found: the leaf mass ratio for FE and GQ positively correlated with RZT whilst the relationship for GL was negative. These findings suggest that the response to RZT is related to a variety's chill requirement; offer an explanation for differences in performance of rootstock–scion combinations at different locations; and will aid the development of more accurate tree performance models by taking RZT into account. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to characterize changes in serum metabolic hormones concentrations from 20 weeks before to 20 weeks post-puberty in bulls and to investigate the associations of metabolic hormones concentrations with testicular development. Leptin concentrations increased from 16 weeks before puberty to 8 weeks post-puberty and insulin concentrations increased from puberty to 8 weeks post-puberty. Growth hormone concentrations decreased after 4 weeks post-puberty, whereas IGF-I concentrations increased from 8 weeks before puberty to 8 weeks post-puberty. During this period, testicular growth was accelerated and testosterone secretion increased substantially, without any significant changes in gonadotropin secretion. Monthly circulating concentrations of leptin, IGF-I and insulin accounted for 63% of the variation in scrotal circumference and 59% of the variation in paired testes volume. In conclusion, the secretion of metabolic hormones was not associated with changes in gonadotropins concentrations. Furthermore, the associations of leptin, IGF-I and insulin concentrations with testes size indicated that these hormones might be involved in a gonadotropin-independent mechanism regulating the testicular development in peripubertal bulls. 相似文献

We provide a century-scale view of small-mammal responses to global warming, without confounding effects of land-use change, by repeating Grinnell's early-20th century survey across a 3000-meter-elevation gradient that spans Yosemite National Park, California, USA. Using occupancy modeling to control for variation in detectability, we show substantial ( approximately 500 meters on average) upward changes in elevational limits for half of 28 species monitored, consistent with the observed approximately 3 degrees C increase in minimum temperatures. Formerly low-elevation species expanded their ranges and high-elevation species contracted theirs, leading to changed community composition at mid- and high elevations. Elevational replacement among congeners changed because species' responses were idiosyncratic. Data from water quality studies conducted in the Sudbury, Ontario, Canada area indicate that substantial decreases in the acidity of surface waters have accompanied reductions in SO2 emissions from the Sudbury smelting industry since 1977. On average, acidic lakes in the Sudbury area showed a decrease in H+ of ~ 50% between 1974–76 and 1981–83, and the severity of springtime pH depressions in streams decreased. Although many Sudbury area surface waters remain highly acidic, general decreases in acidity appear to be continuing. The broad physical and biological principles behind climate change and its potential large scale ecological impacts on biota are fairly well understood, although likely responses of biotic communities at fine spatio-temporal scales are not, limiting the ability of conservation programs to respond effectively to climate change outside the range of human experience. Much of the climate debate has focused on attempts to resolve key uncertainties in a hypothesis-testing framework. However, conservation decisions cannot await resolution of these scientific issues and instead must proceed in the face of uncertainty. We suggest that conservation should precede in an adaptive management framework, in which decisions are guided by predictions under multiple, plausible hypotheses about climate impacts. Under this plan, monitoring is used to evaluate the response of the system to climate drivers, and management actions (perhaps experimental) are used to confront testable predictions with data, in turn providing feedback for future decision making. We illustrate these principles with the problem of mitigating the effects of climate change on terrestrial bird communities in the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA. 相似文献
