Parasitic agents have been associated with keratitis, but a diagnosis of parasitic keratitis has not been commonly made in domestic animals. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical and histopathological findings in seven dogs with chronic keratitis caused by microfilariae diagnosed in Brazil. All dogs presented with superficial corneal opacities of varying degrees affecting the perilimbal and central regions of the cornea, with other opaque areas appearing as crystalline deposits and corneal vascularization. The lesions were bilateral and were associated with mild‐to‐moderate conjunctival hyperemia. There was no history of blepharospasm or pruritus, and no subjects presented with epithelial erosions. Corneal biopsy revealed free microfilariae in the corneal stroma, with varying degrees of inflammation and collagen fiber destruction. The microfilariae were also found in skin lesions by skin snip technique. No adult worms were found in these dogs, and no dogs were on heartworm preventative before diagnosis. Monthly doses of oral ivermectin improved ocular and dermal lesions. One dog showed complete remission with the treatment. The species of the microfilariae was not identified. 相似文献

Soil subsidence of Florida Histosols caused by microbial oxidation following drainage of these soils has resulted in decreased depth. Soil pH has increased from tillage operations and vertical movement of carbonates from underlying limestone bedrock through evapotranspiration and seepage irrigation. This study was conducted to determine sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) yield response to banded elemental sulfur (S) (granular 90% S and granular 80% S with 5% manganese (Mn)) in soils with unamended pH ranging from 6.5 to 7.2. Four field experiments were established as small-plots on Histosols in the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA). Each experiment was a randomized complete block design with six replications and elemental S rates of 0, 90, 224, and 448 kg S ha?1. Less than optimum leaf Mn at two locations were associated with Mehlich 3-extractable Mn<5 g m?3. The objective of this study was to determine if the technique of embryo transfer in cattle can be commercially feasible in
a region situated in the humid tropics of Mexico. Twenty-six Bos taurus and twenty-six Bos indicus cows were estrous synchronized and superovulated to obtain a total of 80 embryos of both sub-species. Embryos were classified
using stereoscopic microscopy based on established criteria. Nine dual-purpose farms situated in the tropics of Mexico were
chosen to provide ten recipient cows each to transfer one embryo per cow. The females were transferred using a fixed-time
protocol after verifying the presence of a corpus luteum on the seventh day after the end of hormonal treatment. Pregnancy
diagnosis was carried out 28 days after embryo transfer by ultrasonography. Estimation of the cost was determined by calculating
the expenses for preparation of the donor and embryo recovery, which were US 633 and US633 and US 589 for B. taurus and B. indicus, respectively. The cost of each embryo was determined considering the number of transferable embryos recovered, which was

The aim of the study was to evaluate the protection generated in mice against Toxoplasma gondii brain cyst burden by vaccination with T. gondii cytoskeleton proteins using Lactobacillus casei as adjuvant. One hundred and sixty-eight NIH mice were randomly allocated into eight groups of 21 mice each. Animals were immunized as follows: in group 1 with Toxoplasma lysate antigen (TLA) in Freund's modified adjuvant, containing L. casei (FMA), in group 2 with Toxoplasma cytoskeleton proteins (TCPs) in FMA, in group 3 with FMA, in group 4 with phosphate buffered saline (PBS), in group 5 with L. casei dead by heath (Lc), in group 6 with Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA), in group 7 with TLA in FCA, and in group 8 with TCP in FCA. Mean brain cyst burden (±S.E.M.) was assessed in mice 8 weeks after challenge with T. gondii Me49 strain (20 cysts per mouse). The percentages of reduction in cyst burden per brain (P < 0.01) as compared with the group 4 (control: mean 3181 ± 97.5) were 77.25% (724 ± 98) in group 1, 88.02% (381 ± 97.5) in group 2, 38.92% (1943 ± 130.3) in group 3, 44.31% (1771.4 ± 102) in group 5, 59.28% (1295.2 ± 99.1) in group 7 and 55.69% (1409.5 ± 89.9) in group 8. In order of importance, the best protection was obtained in groups 2, 1, 7, 8, 5 and 3. Noticeably the mice inoculated with L. casei alone showed a significant reduction in T. gondii brain cysts (P < 0.01), while those animals treated with FCA alone did not. Additionally, IgM anti-T. gondii antibody levels, as determined by ELISA 2 weeks after challenge, were highest in group 2 (P < 0.01) than in the other seven groups. Results suggest that T. gondii cytoskeleton proteins with L. casei as adjuvant constitute a good anti-toxoplasmosis vaccine candidate. 相似文献

This work characterized the egg residual concentrations of albendazole (ABZ ) and its sulphoxide (ABZSO ) and sulphone (ABZSO 2) metabolites and evaluated their effect on egg fertility and hatchability after ABZ treatments to laying hens. Seventy hens were allocated in groups: Group‐1 was the control without treatment; Group‐2 received a single ABZ oral dose (10 mg/kg); Group‐3, ‐4 and ‐5 were treated with ABZ in medicated feed over 7 days at 10, 40, or 80 mg kg?1 day?1, respectively. Eggs were analyzed to determine the ABZ /metabolite level by HPLC or subjected to incubation to evaluate the fertility and hatchability. Only ABZSO and ABZSO 2 metabolites were quantified in egg after ABZ single oral administration with maximum concentrations of 0.47 ± 0.08 and 0.30 ± 0.07 μg/ml, respectively. ABZ and its metabolites were found in eggs after 7‐day ABZ treatments. The egg residue exposure estimated as AUC s (areas under the concentration vs . time curve) were 100.5 (ABZ ), 56.3 (ABZSO ) and 141.3 μg hr g?1 (ABZSO 2). ABZ administration did not affect the egg fertility at any dosages. Egg hatchability was not affected by ABZ treatment at 10 mg/kg in medicated feed, but it decreased when the dose was 4–8 times higher. Canine mammary tumours (CMTs) are a very heterogeneous group of neoplasms with variable prognosis. Their aggressiveness is mainly due to their ability to invade locally and to metastasize. The degradation of extracellular matrix components is an important determinant of the invasive phenotype. The aims of this study were to analyse by immunohistochemistry and double immunofluorescence the expression of metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2) in eight normal canine mammary glands and 118 CMTs (24 benign, 94 malignant) and to investigate relationships with metastatic disease and survival.MMP-2 and TIMP-2 expression was higher in malignant tumours than in normal canine mammary tissue and benign tumours. The main difference between benign and malignant CMTs was the pattern of expression of both molecules: benign tumours presented TIMP-2 and MMP-2 immunoreactivity in the myoepithelial cells lining the basement membrane of tubuloalveolar structures, while malignant tumours showed mainly diffuse expression in neoplastic cells. In malignant tumours, increased TIMP-2 expression was significantly associated with the development of distant metastases, lower overall survival and lower disease-free survival. MMP-2 expression was not significantly associated to any of these parameters. These results suggest that the immunohistochemical expression of TIMP-2 is a useful prognostic factor in CMTs. 相似文献
