Purpose  

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have attracted a great deal of research interest for their potential environmental applications because of their unique properties. Adsorption of organic chemicals on CNMs was reported to be important in controlling their environmental risks. However, the kinetics of the adsorption is hardly investigated in literature. The objective of this work was, therefore, to quantitatively describe the sorption kinetics of 17 α-ethinyl estradiol (EE2) and bisphenol A (BPA) on CNMs as compared to activated carbon (AC).  相似文献

Purpose

In spite of substantial advancement in recent past, the role of metal speciation in assessing biogeochemical behaviour of Pb is still topical. Organic ligands are capable to modify Pb speciation in nutrient/soil solution and in turn its soil–plant transfer and toxicity. In this sense, the main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic ligands on Pb-induced oxidative stress to Vicia faba roots.

Materials and methods

V. faba seedlings grown to controlled hydroponic system were treated with 5 μM Pb as lead nitrate in the presence and absence of organic ligands viz ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid (CA) for 1, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h. The chemical speciation of Pb (percent free and chelated Pb) in nutrient solution in the presence and absence of organic ligands was calculated using Visual Minteq speciation model. The effect of chemical speciation on Pb-induced oxidative stress to V. faba roots was investigated using plant enzymatic antioxidative system [superoxide dismutases (SOD), guaiacol peroxidise (GPX), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), and catalase (CAT)]. The antioxidant enzymes activities were determined using ultraviolet spectrophotometer.

Results and discussion

The activities of SOD, GPX, APX, and GR significantly increased whereas that of CAT decreased in V. faba roots under Pb alone treatment. Lead-induced increase/decrease in antioxidant enzymes activities was not linear but varies with treatment exposure time. EDTA dose dependently inhibited Pb-induced changes in antioxidant enzymes activities. However, CA did not cause any significant change in Pb-induced variation in antioxidant enzymes activities, but delayed or slightly reduced the Pb effect.

Conclusions

The present study suggested that physiological responses of V. faba roots to Pb toxicity vary with applied Pb form and duration of exposure. EDTA can inhibit Pb-induced toxicity to V. faba seedlings by forming stable Pb-EDTA complexes due to its high binding strength for Pb. However, CA had no effect on Pb-induced toxicity to V. faba roots due to weak complexation with Pb.  相似文献

In this work, disks containing different amount of the TiO2 precursor impregnated on the raw red clay were produced. The disks were obtained by pressing in metal template and subsequently calcined at 500 °C. The raw clay was used as rigid support to fix the TiO2. The materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption (BET and BJH), scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The ability of disks to produce superoxide and hydroxyl radicals after photoexcitation with UV irradiation was monitored by EPR. The catalytic efficiency was evaluated by the Reactive Red 141 dye discoloration under artificial UV light and sunlight. The reaction parameters such as concentration of RR-141 and irradiation source were evaluated. The results showed that the disks were able to decolorize 97.5% under sunlight at 60 min. The disks were also efficient in the discoloration until the tenth cycle, resulting in discoloration values near the initial cycles. Additionally, the dye fragments produced in cleavage of molecule during the reaction were evaluated by LC/MS-MS.

Purpose

Inorganic contaminants present a major challenge for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to determine the extent of trace metal contamination and investigate the influence of different plant communities on trace metal accumulation in the soils of the Florida Everglades.

Materials and methods

Soil samples (n?=?117) were collected from 0 to 10-cm depth using a stainless steel coring device from sites with three dominant plant communities—cattail, sawgrass, and slough—of Water Conservation Area-2A (43,281 ha) of Florida Everglades.

Results and discussion

The mean pH in soils collected from three plant communities was 6.75–6.82, whereas electrical conductivity was slightly greater in the sawgrass (0.69 dS m?1) than cattail (0.58 dS m?1) and slough (0.40 dS m?1). Mean reduction–oxidation potential was greatest in cattail (?113 mV) than sawgrass (?85.3 mV) and slough (?48.3 mV) soils. Among 11 trace metals (As, B, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Zn) found in soil samples, Na had the greatest contents and was greater in cattail (2070 mg kg?1) and sawgrass (1735 mg kg?1) than slough (1297 mg kg?1). Four trace metals (B, Cu, Mo, Ni) were significantly greater in cattail than sawgrass and slough. Whereas, Mn was significantly lower in cattail (31 mg kg?1) than both sawgrass (84 mg kg?1) and slough (51 mg kg?1). Cattail also had significantly lower Cr (1.97 mg kg?1) and Pb (10 mg kg?1) than sawgrass (Cr 2.5 mg kg?1; Pb 20.8 mg kg?1). As (<6.9 mg kg?1), Co (<1.3 mg kg?1), and Zn (<17.2 mg kg?1) were not significantly different among soils collected from three plant community-dominant sites. Contents of Cd and Se were below the method detection limits (Cd 0.01 mg L?1; Se 0.2 mg L?1) and are not reported.

Conclusions

None of the trace metals in the soils exceeded the US Environmental Protection Agency sediment toxicity thresholds. Results from this study provided baseline concentrations of trace metals, which can be used to measure the success of restoration efforts in Florida Everglades.

Purpose

The alpine meadow has received mounting attention due to its degradation resulting from overgrazing on the Tibetan Plateau. However, belowground biotic characteristics under varied grazing stresses in this ecosystem are poorly understood.

Materials and methods

Here, the responses of soil protozoan abundance, community composition, microbial biomass, and enzyme activity to five grazing patterns including (1) artificial grassland without grazing (AG), (2) winter grazing (WG), (3) grazing for 7 months within a fence (GF), (4) continuous grazing for a whole year (CG), and (5) natural heavy grazing (HG) were investigated for two continuous years. Soil protozoan community composition was investigated using the most possible number (MPN) method, and soil microbial biomass and enzyme activity were analyzed using chloroform fumigation extraction and substrate utilization methods, respectively. Multivariate statistical analysis, the analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple comparisons, and correlation analysis were together performed.

Results and discussion

The WG treatment had the highest abundance of total protozoa (2342–2524 cell g?1). Compared with AG treatment, HG treatment significantly reduced the abundance of soil total, flagellate and ciliate protozoa, and protease activities in 2012 and 2013. Significantly, lower soil microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN) was also observed in the HG (6.60 and 14.6 mg N kg?1) than those in other four treatments (22.3–82.9 mg N kg?1) both in 2012 and 2013, whereas significantly higher microbial biomass carbon (MBC) was observed in HG than that in AG treatment in 2012. Moreover, significantly positive correlations were detected between the abundance of soil protozoa and soil moisture, pH, organic C, total N, and MBN. Our results indicated that soil protozoa showed a negative response to increasing grazing intensities and therefore, suggesting that aboveground grazing practices also exerted strong impact on belowground protozoa, not only on soil microbial characteristics.

Conclusions

Soil protozoan community composition was apparently different between the HG treatment and other four grazing patterns and was potentially impacted by altered soil properties and MBC and/or MBN. Our results suggested that moderate grazing may sustain better belowground biotic diversity and ecosystem functioning in this alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau.

A wild tetraploid oat Avena maroccana Gdgr. was collected from the 11 populations in the periphery of Rommani and Casablanca geographic groups of Morocco. Genetic diversity of the species was investigated using six allozyme systems. Allelic frequencies were scored representing eight polymorphic and five monomorphic loci. Coefficient of gene differentiation (Gst) was 0.3019, which indicated great genetic differentiation. The number of alleles per locus was 2.6154, the percentage of polymorphic loci was 61.54, and the expected heterozygosity was 0.2462 in all populations. Genetic diversity in A. maroccana was high in comparison to self-pollinated species. In total, nine heterozygotes resulting from outcrossing were found in the progeny from M1, M3, M4, M22 and M26. The population of M7 had peculiar alleles Pgd–2SS and Pgd-1SS in high frequency. M9 had the lowest level of diversity out of the 11 populations. Geographic and genetic distances between all the populations were not significantly correlated with each other (r = 0.0996). Cluster analysis showed that two groups, (M1, M22, M2 and M4) and (M3, M23, M8, M5 and M26) were apparently differentiated. Two populations of the Casablanca group, M7 and M9 were independent from each other, and were separated distinctly from the other populations. Genetic diversity of the Rommani and Casablanca groups was almost the same in all the parameters. This was due to the similar man-made habitat such as roadside or rich fertile soil and brown clay soils. The population size of A. maroccana was small and restricted to the narrow central Morocco with great genetic differentiation so that genetic diversity may be reflected from the results of genetic drift and outcrossing heterozygote segregation.  相似文献

Cultivated tetraploid Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae) cotton has been characterized as having one flower at a primordia. In a strain (CSH-13) of Gossypium hirsutum cotton, four plants out of 103 had two to three double bolls or twin bolls/plant during 2003–2004 crop season at CICR regional station, Sirsa, Haryana, India. Progeny evaluation in 2004 and 2005 crop seasons indicated that plants raised from seeds harvested from double bolls/twin bolls produced plants bearing double bolls only and plant progeny raised from the seed of single bolls from these mutant plants produced two to three double bolls per plant similar to the parent. Progeny testing revealed that double boll formation is the result of spontaneous mutation and environment does not influence its expression. The mutant is early in maturity by 10–15 days, naked seeded and possesses comparable agronomic characters with normal plants. Another spontaneous mutant of Gossypium hirsutum having more than three appendages originating from primordia.: four bolls one leaf, three bolls one leaf, two bolls two leaves, one boll three leaves were obtained from the population of CISV-13 strain in crop season 2003. These appendage groups have been described as bicolor unit by Clemens Bayer, [Zur Infloreszenzmorphologie der Malvales. Dissertations Botany 212 (1994)] and cluster mutant by Russell and Luther [J Cott Sci 6 (2002) 115]. One to three bolls in a cluster or bicolor unit were observed without formation of seeds and lint. About one-third of the total bolls on the mutant plant were of this type. In progeny testing during 2004 and 2005 crop seasons, this mutant produced plants exclusively with more than three appendages revealing that plants identified in 2003 were due to spontaneous mutation. This mutant was also early and naked seeded. Many of the other characters of the mutant plants were comparable with the wild type plants of the strain. Both the mutants were observed having economic impact due to their better yielding ability as compare to respective parents.  相似文献

The development of EST-SSR in foxtail millet (Setaria italica) for polymorphism and transferability study was reported here. From 1213 EST sequences, 30 SSRs were obtained and primers were designed for 26 SSRs. Among them, four pairs of SSR primers amplified polymorphic products in 12 foxtail millet cultivars and one accession of Setaria viridis, a wild relative of foxtail millet, with 10 alleles detected for the four loci and 2.5 alleles per locus. In addition, ten SSR markers could be transferred to other nine Gramineae species. The putative functions of 11 ESTs containing polymorphic and transferable SSRs were also identified.  相似文献

This study characterized soil chemical and microbiological properties in hay production systems that received from 0 to 600 kg plant-available N (PAN) ha−1 year−1 from either swine lagoon effluent (SLE) or ammonium nitrate (AN) from 1999 to 2001. The forage systems contained plots planted with bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.) or endophyte-free tall fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.). In March 2004, the plots were sampled for measurements of a suite of soil chemical and microbiological properties. Nitrogen fertilization rates were significantly correlated with soil pH and K2SO4-extractable soil C but not with total soil C, soil C/N ratio, electrical conductivity, or Mehlich-3-extractable nutrients. Soil supplied with SLE had significantly lower Mehlich-3-extractable nutrients than the soil supplied with AN. Two indicators of soil N-supplying capacity (potentially mineralizable N and amino sugar N) varied with plant species and the type of N fertilizer. However, they generally peaked at an application rate of 200 or 400 kg PAN ha−1 year−1. Soil microbial biomass C also peaked at an application rate of 200 or 400 kg PAN ha−1 year−1. Nitrification potential was significantly higher in soil supplied with AN than in the unfertilized control but was similar between SLE-fertilized and unfertilized soils. Our results indicated that an application rate as high as 600 kg PAN ha−1 year−1 did not benefit soil microbial biomass, microbial activity, and N transformation processes in these forage systems.  相似文献
