Large trench-parallel gravity variations predict seismogenic behavior in subduction zones 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We demonstrate that great earthquakes occur predominantly in regions with a strongly negative trench-parallel gravity anomaly (TPGA), whereas regions with strongly positive TPGA are relatively aseismic. These observations suggest that, over time scales up to at least 1 million years, spatial variations of seismogenic behavior within a given subduction zone are stationary and linked to the geological structure of the fore-arc. The correlations we observe are consistent with a model in which spatial variations in frictional properties on the plate interface control trench-parellel variations in fore-arc topography, gravity, and seismogenic behavior. 相似文献

Abstract.— We evaluated the effects of different lighting spectra and routine disturbances on the growth and stress responses of yellow perch Perca, flavescens. Fish were reared in tanks under one of three different lighting spectra: blue (405–530 nm), red (600–750 nm). or full spectrum (380–750 nm). For each lighting spectrum, fish were reared under one of two disturbance levels: one in which the fish were exposed to 2–4 daily routine disturbances which typify intensive tank culture conditions (e.g., casting shadows over the tank, sham tank siphoning, and dissolved oxygen measurement: ‘disturbed’). or a second treatment in which such disturbances were minimized (‘undisturbed’). The fish were reared for 87 d under temperature, photoperiod. and feeding conditions near optimal for the growth of yellow perch. The cortisol stress response of the different fish groups was evaluated by measuring baseline serum cortisol levels on days 0, 1,3, and 21, and by measuring cortisol levels 30 min after the application of an acute handling stressor on days 0, 1, and 3. Treatment effects on growth were measured from days 21–86 of the study. On day 87, various organs and parameters were evaluated to compare the health and condition of fish reared under the different treatments. Disturbed fish gained less weight and length, and had a significantly lower condition factor than undisturbed fish. Additionally, the disturbed fish showed no signs of acclimation to the frequent disturbances. The fish under red and full spectrum light gained more length than those under blue light. Frequent disturbance had a greater negative effect on length gain in fish reared under red light than in those reared under the other light treatments. On day 21, but not on other days, baseline cortisol levels were higher in disturbed than in undisturbed fish. Undisturbed fish had higher levels of mesentery fat than disturbed fish. Our results demonstrate that yellow perch growth can be significantly affected by disturbance level and lighting conditions. These factors should be taken into consideration when developing culture strategies to maximize the growth of yellow perch reared under intensive culture conditions. 相似文献

Marine fungi are known to produce structurally unique secondary metabolites, and more than 1000 marine fungal-derived metabolites have already been reported. Despite the absence of marine fungal-derived metabolites in the current clinical pipeline, dozens of them have been classified as potential chemotherapy candidates because of their anticancer activity. Over the last decade, several comprehensive reviews have covered the potential anticancer activity of marine fungal-derived metabolites. However, these reviews consider the term “cytotoxicity” to be synonymous with “anticancer agent”, which is not actually true. Indeed, a cytotoxic compound is by definition a poisonous compound. To become a potential anticancer agent, a cytotoxic compound must at least display (i) selectivity between normal and cancer cells (ii) activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) cancer cells; and (iii) a preferentially non-apoptotic cell death mechanism, as it is now well known that a high proportion of cancer cells that resist chemotherapy are in fact apoptosis-resistant cancer cells against which pro-apoptotic drugs have more than limited efficacy. The present review thus focuses on the cytotoxic marine fungal-derived metabolites whose ability to kill cancer cells has been reported in the literature. The first chemical study of the Indo-Pacific dorid nudibranch Aldisa andersoni resulted in the isolation of five chlorinated phenyl-pyrrolyloxazoles belonging to the phorbazole series. Two new molecules, 9-chloro-phorbazole D and N1-methyl-phorbazole A, co-occurring with known phorbazoles A, B and D, have been characterized. Phorbazoles were found to be present mainly in the external part of the mollusc. The structures of the new compounds were determined by interpretation of spectroscopic data, mainly NMR and mass spectrometry and by comparison with the literature data. Evaluation of feeding-deterrence activity as well as in vitro growth inhibitory properties in human cancer cells was also carried out. 相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal spores and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) isolated from acid soils were analyzed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) for Al detection. Mycorrhizal structures of Glomus intraradices produced under in vitro conditions as well as spores and GRSP from neutral and Cu-polluted soils were used as contrasting criteria. Spores and GRSP from soils with 7 and 70% Al saturation showed autofluorescence which increased especially at the highest soil Al level and when Al3+ solution was added. G.intraradices spores showed fluorescence only when exogenous Al3+ was added. On the contrary, spores and GRSP from neutral and Cu-polluted soils showed little or no significant fluorescence. This fluorescence shown by fungal structures and GRSP when subjected to high Al (of endogenous or exogenous origin) suggest a high capacity for Al immobilization, which could be an effective way to reduce Al activity and phytotoxicity in acid soils. 相似文献

The emergence of virulent Plasmodium falciparum in Africa within the past 6000 years as a result of a cascade of changes in human behavior and mosquito transmission has recently been hypothesized. Here, we provide genetic evidence for a sudden increase in the African malaria parasite population about 10,000 years ago, followed by migration to other regions on the basis of variation in 100 worldwide mitochondrial DNA sequences. However, both the world and some regional populations appear to be older (50,000 to 100,000 years old), suggesting an earlier wave of migration out of Africa, perhaps during the Pleistocene migration of human beings. 相似文献
